THE boots to wear if you can't go barefoot!
Bison Boots are barefoot boots handcrafted with bison leather, a love for the outdoors, and hard work.
A barefoot shoe is a shoe that works WITH your foot while you walk, instead of against it. Things like high heels, curved soles, stiff materials, and crammed toe space are all things that aren't helpful- no, they are down right harmful. We believe that even things that many of us think are helping, like arch supporting insoles (yes, even I wore them for most of my life prior to finding the concept of barefoot shoes) inhibit the use our feet rather than heal.
Properly made barefoot shoes eliminate all of these harmful aspects and instead become one with your foot, giving your feet the chance to work to their optimal potential...
allowing your feet to bend in all directions, just like how they would if you were truly barefoot.
This is currently our one, and only, Bison Boot. We have a vision for a simpler life, resulting in fewer items with higher quality. The brown color we have chosen is much darker indoors than out. In the sunlight the brown lightens and takes on beautiful hues of reds and oranges. In our photos, our boots are not oiled or waxed. You can darken the brown at home by oiling or waxing. The color and design were chosen because of their versatile nature- not only for the occasion but for the person (unisex).
We will be using European sizes because we have come to love their sizing system- it is so much simpler than American sizing. We will offer sizes 36-47 (which covers the U.S. range of a women's size 6 to a men's size 12). The European sizing system uses more whole number options to get rid of the half size confusion and does not have separate men and women sizes (a one size scale for both genders)!
Features of our barefoot boots include...
-Wide toe box area giving the toes plenty of space to move and be themselves!
Our split toe design not only has purpose, it has meaning as well. Can you guess what that is? Check out the picture again...that's right, it symbolizes the split between the big toe and the little toes. We were faced with a very perplexing situation in the design room with the formation of the leather on the front toe area. This toe split design was the perfect answer and we love that it mimics the human foot anatomy as well!
- Super soft, luxurious bison leather.
It is 40% stronger than traditional cowhides and retains it's natural beauty- nothing is done to alter the natural look of each hide. YOUR BOOTS MAY HAVE UNIQUE MARKINGS. This is nothing we did here at Bison Boots, it is a testament to the life that animal lived.
FYI, this is the softest leather we have ever felt, the perfect addition to a barefoot boot! And your feet get to feel it everyday because we left them unlined!
-Zero drop sole. In other words, there is absolutely no heel or stiff strange curve to our sole. This enables our boots to work WITH your feet- not against them.
More about the soles:
We use a thin, very pliable, Vibram rubber sole allowing your foot to move correctly while still giving you protection from the elements under foot. Measurement under foot- 9.5 mm (Vibram sole is 6.5 mm and the mid-sole is 3 mm).
Underneath your foot, there is a double layer of soft bison leather (the same as the rest of the shoe), an additional very, very thin layer of regular cowhide leather (needed to achieve the look and design we were going for- still extremely pliable), and the Vibram sole.
So, why us? Why Bison Boots?
We have spent the last couple of years testing barefoot boots, not because we planned on ever making them, but because we came to learn of their importance. When we finally gave up on many barefoot brands we tried, we began to consider making our own. With the marketing skills I've learned through blogging and my husband's craftsmanship skills and engineering background, we were able to make this a reality.
THIS IS US- below- THE OWNERS, THE FOUNDERS, THE CREATORS, THE DESIGNERS, THE CRAFTERS.
Above and Below- working hard during the beginning phases of design and creation. Yes, we make our boots! Yes, these are real action photos we took of each other at around 2 am one morning! Whew, the late night inspirations!
We believe 100% that we have mastered combining functionality and sustainability to achieve a beautiful end product- a barefoot, minimalist, long lasting boot for both men and women.
How so? We accomplished this by choosing super soft, luxurious bison leather that hasn't been altered in any way, allowing it to maintain its natural properties of longevity and beauty. Your boots may even have unique markings on them. This is nothing we can take credit for, it is a marking that occurred naturally in the hide, a testament of the life that bison lived.
But choosing leather wasn't enough to call it a barefoot boot. This is where the Vibram sole is essential. Without its thin 0 drop and flexibility our shoes would be incomplete. See how it bends easily allowing you to feel the Earth beneath you.
The combination of bison leather and our chosen Vibram soles makes Bison Boots the perfect barefoot boot. And the versatile nature of the color we have chosen is the perfect addition to your hiking trip, business meeting, and/or family and friends gatherings. Bison Boots are made in the United States. We see the project through, start to finish. From design to creation.
We are in the process of moving into a bigger facility with a larger shop and even a store front, however we still could really use an initial boost in sales to help us fully setup.
Go ahead, what are you waiting on?

Risks and challenges
We strive to use non toxic, sustainable materials and methods of production- which is our biggest challenge as these materials and processes can be difficult to find. However, no matter how hard or costly, this is a huge part of who we are, and that will never change.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
