About this project

The Father of the Drums: W.S. “Fluke” Holland
Did you realize that there was one man who played drums on all of Carl Perkin’s original Sun Records recordings, played during the famous Million Dollar Quartet session that featured Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley, and was Johnny Cash’s only drummer for nearly 40 years? And the first time he walked into Sun Studio, he didn’t even know how to play drums? It’s true. His name? W.S. “Fluke” Holland.
Today, Fluke is recognized around the world as a legendary musician, artist, music innovator and rock & roll pioneer.
He was “there when it happened” at Memphis’ Sun Recording Studio laying down his unique style of drumming on such international and timeless hits as Blue Suede Shoes, Matchbox, Honey Don’t and other unforgettable Carl Perkins recordings. He toured with other trailblazing artists like Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison. His unique drumming style helped give birth and a voice to Rock & Roll.
The sound that became famous around the world on virtually all of Johnny Cash’s hit records, and known as the “Tennessee Three sound”, was largely developed by Fluke’s “train-like” rhythms and driving beat.   It was Johnny Cash who would always introduce W.S. as "the father of the drums."
While his place in music history is documented in books and celebrated by his peers, many fans believe that Holland has received far less recognition than he is due.

This documentary is about the man behind “The Man in Black” who is still very much active today at the age of 78, playing the music he loves. W.S. “Fluke” Holland continues to influence other musicians the world over, as a true American original artist, passionately dedicated to his calling. In 2014, Fluke will celebrate 60 years since he first walked through the doors at Sun Studio in Memphis.

We are privileged to be granted access to W.S. Holland’s own personal photos, home movies and videos in the production of our documentary. In telling the story of W.S. Holland, we’re also telling the story of Johnny Cash, since the two lives were so intertwined for so many years. In fact, we take the meaning of Johnny’s inscription in Fluke’s copy of his autobiography as our endorsement to tell the story.

Our budget will be used mostly for travel to obtain interviews, equipment rentals, crew, actors for reenactments, legal fees, obtaining rights to photos and performance footage for use in our story, and festival fees. And of course providing you, the contributors, with fabulous rewards for your support.
True fans of W.S. Holland, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, rockabilly music and rock and roll in general will be thrilled with many of our rewards that we’re offering for your Kickstarter contributions. We have many highly collectible autographed items, from pictures and posters to drum sticks and drum heads, plus, tickets to our Jackson, Tennessee premiere so you can meet Fluke, possibly a chance to join a small group on a tour of Sun Studios in Memphis with your tour guide, W.S. Holland, and even the chance to have the man himself, W.S. Holland, and his band, play at your event.

WS Holland and so many others like him have given us all so much enjoyment and musical entertainment throughout our lives. They have left us with such a vital music legacy future generations will know about and appreciate through efforts like "The Father of the Drums" documentary.  And those true fans will also find our documentary fascinating as they can see and hear the story of rock and roll in Memphis, Sun Studios, and Johnny Cash from the most unique perspective—from the inside, because he was there when it happened.

Risks and challenges

Of course, one of the biggest obstacles in the production of this documentary will be scheduling. My shooting schedule will be at the mercy of many factors, including my work schedule, W.S. Holland's tour schedule, and trying to get potential interview subjects to schedule some time for me. Then of course, when we shoot any reenactments, there'll be casting, location scouting, wardrobe, and any extra crew and equipment needed. Then, once I've gathered all my interviews and footage, there comes the long task of editing. I'm planning to enter some film festivals, so I want this film to be absolutely top notch. This project is important to me, and I want to be able to give it everything I've got.
