A limited edition screen print and t-shirt to honor the ill-fated Edsel, perhaps history's most spectacular product failure!
Hey there, I'm Tony from Kansas City. This past year, I've used Kickstarter to successfully launch a couple limited-release design projects. It's been an enjoyable experience, so here I am, back for another go! This time we're taking on an automotive legend - the Edsel!
The Edsel was an extremely short-lived Ford Motor Company division introduced in the late 1950s. It only lasted two disastrous years before the plug was pulled. Many things contributed to the Edsel's failure - awkward styling, misguided market research, poor timing, corporate politics, even the name itself. Regardless, the spectacular and expensive debacle has given the Edsel a prominent place in automotive lore.
Ate Up With Motor has a great essay on the Edsel. Check it out if you have the chance!
This detailed design is based on Edsel's debut 1958 model. Its styling was widely panned, with its distinctive horse-collar grill the butt of many jokes. I say the unpleasant appearance is a virtue! Here I've given it some proper attitude with a slammed stance and chopped roofline. Here, I've modified the grille's "E D S E L" lettering in a nod to the brand's infamous history. I've added a ton of texture with intricate line and dot patterns. It's all super-crisp and really pops when screened in white over black!
* UPDATE - DEMOCRATIC COMPONENT ADDED *
Digg the design, but hate the word F A I L? Now you can choose! I'll create seperate runs of posters and shirts for the top two vote-getters, then for every $1000 over goal I'll add another option! You'll get to choose from the winners when you complete the backer survey, should it successfully fund.
FAIL - SLED - FUEL - HAMB? YOU CHOOSE!
The poster is an 24" x 18" screen print on French Paper's killer black Muscletone. Kansas City's La Cucaracha Press will handle the printing. One poster is $30 and includes shipping in the US. Add $10 for international shipping. If you want more than one just add $20 for each additional print and make a note in the backer survey (if it successfully funds - fingers crossed!).
The t-shirts will also feature the same design as the poster. White ink screen-printed on a classic black, preshrunk, jersey knit tee. Sizes S-XL will be $25 each. Add $10 for international shipping. If you want a XXL or XXXL please add $2 for each extra X.

Since this is Kickstarter and anything can happen, let me throw a wild pie-in-the-sky idea out there. If funding cracks $100,000 I will do my darndest to BUY AN EDSEL, make it road-worthy, emblazon it with the names of all backers, then embark on an EPIC CROSS COUNTRY JOURNEY, documented along the way! Of course, as members of Team Edsel, you would all be welcome to a ride... Whaddya say?!
Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The design has some very fine details, so a few test runs will likely be necessary to dial in the look. Beyond that, shipping is a challenging process but one that improves with each project. And I have good help!
