Women of the Mountain is a feature-length documentary told through the narratives of six women: three who run the world’s longest ultra-marathons through the world’s highest mountain ranges, and three who live in those rugged terrains. From the Himalayas to the Alps to the Sierra Nevada, this film tells the stories of resilient women from around the world.
Their powerful narratives show how they rise above the challenges of age, culture, gender or any parameters society sets for them.
Join producer and co-director Rebecca Byerly as she fully immerses herself in the struggles and triumphs of these six very different women. So far, she has run, and the crew has filmed, a 135-mile race that touches nearly 18,000 feet in the Himalayas of Ladakh, India and a 125-mile race through the Alps in Switzerland. This September she will run a 200-mile ultra-marathon in California's Sierra Nevada. Editor and co-director Natacha Giler along with cinematographers from America, Europe and India capture breathtaking landscapes in counterpoint to eye-level views of the local communities and grueling moments on the trail.

These images and the stories they tell show viewers these ancient mountains and their people in an entirely new way. From the locals to the athletes, the stories of the women we feature remind us that we can always Rise Above.
Risks and challenges
Staying injury free and fit enough to run hundreds of miles with little sleep across daunting terrain is challenging. Filming the races and capturing the stories of the women we profile is a feat. To tell their stories, the film crew has endured difficult conditions, often traveling long distances at high altitudes on foot or horseback, with no access to electricity. We prepare as much as possible, but a lot of our success is simply having the grit it takes to get through these races and days in the mountains while intimately telling a story.
Our greatest challenge is this, funding, for these women's stories to be heard and to finish this film we need your help!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
