About

Since moving to Baltimore half a decade ago, I have been fascinated with the convention scene of the area. Having lived in San Diego previously, I found the cons of Maryland, much more diverse in their audience and make up. For the last few years I have been involved in the convention scene in many roles: as an attendee, artist, vendor, panelist, community guest, department head, and senior staffer. During that time I have been researching the story of these events and have interviewed the people who run them.

The story of pop culture conventions is a fascinating one. Using the conventions of Maryland and DC as an entry point, I plan to put together a history book that details the history of such cons in the context of how they have affected fandoms, their host cities, and their various industries. However, as much passion as I have for this project, such a task is time consuming and I am not sure this niche topic will find an audience. Therefore I have launched a Kickstarter to gauge the public interest in such a history book. If this sounds like something that interests you, feel free to show your support by donating to the project. Even if you can’t, if you have interesting con experiences, we would love to know. Tell us your story.

Fandom Con History Comic Book

For Phase I will be a mixed comic and text booklet on the history of Maryland's and DC's fan culture and connecting subjects. Each section of this history book plans to look at specific cons, divided by type and era. The first section looks at fandoms in a historical context. It looks at the centuries old argument whether fandoms and the entertainment arts are pure escapism or serve a fundamental human purpose.

The main body of this book is divided into six sections. Each section will be divided into three parts. The first part will be an introduction to the specific fandom and industry and its influence leading the next section on the list. Next, a belief overview of the historical formation of the different cons. Then finally the main part of each section focuses on the local cons themselves, the people who run them, the city that hosts them, and the years of stories from attendees.

Risks and challenges

Phase I of this project funds a comic issue sized booklet, which is meant to serve as a bite sized version of the larger vision I have in mind. Given that there is enough interest, Phase II of the project will be worked on.
