Some of the biggest questions in the world of science may be answered by studying quarks, the smallest of particles. The problem with trying to study quarks is that you can’t find just one quark; you need to find them in groups called hadrons, or some other exotic particles, like the Pentaquark.
In Pentaquark, you are trying to give science a helping hand by collecting the 5 quarks that form this particle at the detector of a massive particle collider. Move cards you need to the detector, discard others so they may come back as anti-quarks, and try to minimize the number of quarks scattered and lost. If too many cards are removed from the game, the Pentaquark has slipped through undetected once again!
Pentaquark is a single player game designed by Mike Mullins with art by Fabrice Weiss. Gameplay lasts 15-30 minutes (you will immediately want to play again) and recommended for ages 12 and up.
The game consists of:
-Fold Out Full Color Rules-Wallet Packaging
This is part of our Wallet Line and will be packaged in a small vinyl wallet, perfect for taking it on the go. It's pocket-sized, portable and protective... and has proven itself with our growing line of wallet games.
The $3 Six-Card Bonus Pack is available in the Game and Bonus Pack pledge level or by adding $3 to any pledge. Here's some info:
Gluons come in each of the 3 quark colors. When one comes into play, you must attach it to a free quark, thereby changing it's color. A blue gluon might change a green up quark to blue and win you the game, or it could turn your red down quark blue and upend your careful planning.
Bosons are very interesting particles emitted when quarks change from one flavor to another. In the game, a boson will have two icons on it, such as up and down. If that boson were to come into play, you must attach it to an up or a down, changing it into the other flavor.
This 6-card expansion can have a dramatic effect on the game. At first everything feels a bit chaotic, but with some due diligence, new strategies will begin to reveal themselves.
Rules for Gluons, Bosons and Top Cards:
Mike has put together a wonderful video detailing the ins and outs of Pentaquark, from how to play to some strategy for beginners. Check it out below:
You can print the full game right here. It's only 4 pages long with just black ink (you can get a feel for it without color since the colors are written on the cards, but it's a game about color so the color will REALLY help later). The rules are just another few pages, and you can even make it work by just viewing them online.
Black and white Print and Play with rules included. (but for the most up to date rules only, go to this link):
Please note: The rules are NOT final. They still need to go through editing and graphic design, but any notes that you have at this point are incredibly appreciated.
"The gameplay for Pentaquark is so easy, but the longer-lasting effects of those choices make this 18 card game something quite a bit more than what you initially think. Mike Mullins has put together a quick, fun, but rather thinky, game about perfect information, hand management, and of course science! This falls in line with other great solitaire card games, an instant back for me!" - Donny, Shawn, Travis - Low Player Count Podcast
"There's a certain charm to this strange little game. Whether you're a fan of solo games or quantum physicists, you'll find Pentaquark frustratingly fun." - Mike Wokasch / The Indie Game Report

Mike combined his love for solo gaming and science (he did major in biology and minor in chemistry at Duke afterall) to create Pentaquark for Button Shy Games.
Button Shy is the little guy in the big competitive board game world. Instead of trying to compete with the many great publishers out there, we decided to do things our own way. We order Wallet Games in parts and assemble them here in the US. It's an old fashioned mom and pop style operation, releasing high quality, yet personal little games.
We release a new game each month and have a great following of repeat customers. As a result, we've built the Board Game of the Month Club, a subscription service where you receive unreleased microgames, promo cards, a newsletter with interviews and game-related comics, and big Kickstarter discounts.... every month.

Risks and challenges
We've done our homework and have as much ready as possible before even launching the Kickstarter, but there are always challenges once it's completed. There may be factory delays or errors, which can cause delays for fulfillment. We've had this issue previously and managed to turn it into a positive thing by providing extra content in the final version of the product.
All of our previous projects have been fulfilled as close as possible to the intended date, most have been on time or within one month of the delivery date and some even early.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
