About this project
OBSOLETE! Magazine is a quarterly publication in the tradition of the International Times, OZ, The East Village Other, The Berkeley Barb, The Chicago Seed, The Whole Earth Catalog, PUNK! and the other great underground rags of days past. This is a real, turn your fingers black, old-school newsprint tabloid, complete with slapdash layout, smudgy printing and inflammatory rhetoric.
Some may feel that a publication like this is an anachronistic throwback. We think it's time to re-examine the printed word. Perhaps the newspaper is for the “early adopters” of post-apocalyptic technology? In the pages of OBSOLETE!, we dumpster-dive our culture and see what the corporatocracy has left behind. We want to make something new out of the empty vacuform plastic package that they sold us our lives in....
We published issue #1 this summer, featuring top-notch writers and artists, including Mick Farren, Amy Digi, Alissa Bader, Bart Plantenga and Todd Colby. Unlike other a lot of other 'zines, we pay our contributors, and we are seeking funds to pay our artists and writers for the next three quarterly issues. Because print media sales are down, distributors are reluctant to take it on. Building a stable of advertisers takes time. We plan to adopt a "freeware" approach - giving away the magazine for free and asking for contributions from satisfied readers. We just need a little help from our friends to get the first few issues out there.
Due out in October, issue #2 includes original writing and artwork by JONATHAN SHAW, J.D. KING, JOOLZ DENBY, QOJAK, DEB RIS, GARY AND DEBRA PARKY, ALISSA BADER, WILDGIRL, an interview with sci-fi writer and futurist KARL SCHROEDER and a special tribute to the late great illustrator PETER ASCHWANDEN. The Cover this month is by Steve Walters of SCREWBALL PRESS.
CAN YOU HELP US MAKE THIS HAPPEN? A small contribution will help us give our contributors a modest payment for their work and pay for the printing and mailing.
