OBLIVION is story of marital strife, sleep deprivation, and hallucination. Based on the story by David Foster Wallace.

NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR:

I started reading David Foster Wallace's fiction and non-fiction in 2000. His writing changed the way I read and write, which is probably the highest compliment I can pay. OBLIVION was his first new collection of fiction that was published while I was aware of him as a writer, so maybe it has a special significance for me since it was the first one I got to anticipate and really wait for. Granted some of it still landed like a brick when I first read through its dense stories. But since then each time I've come back to it, it has offered new shocks and surprises, and the most recent time, the idea for a film based on it's title story.

For well over a year I've been developing OBLIVION as a narrative film with a small group of incredible people, all inspired to bring David Foster Wallace's story of marital conflict, sleep deprivation and hallucination to the screen. My goal was never to merely dramatize OBLIVION, but rather to make an entertaining film that stands on its own, a whole new way to experience the story.  I worked with the David Foster Literary Trust and Bonnie Nadell at the Hill Nadell Literary Agency to obtain the rights to the story, and after many long months of drafts, storyboards in notebooks, production design estimates, more drafts, scheduling, budgeting, more drafts, favors, hand shakes, countless meetings and alot of dreaming, the groundwork has been laid to mount this production.

It is extremely difficult to make high concept a Short Film, without the possibility of "Return on Investment" that a feature film promises from a theatrical run, but at the same high production standards. More and more producers and film financiers are only willing to spend money to make money.

Presenting a project like a 25 minute short film that costs anything more than a shoestring DIY budget leads to much head-scratching and hand-wringing from the powers that be. Compared to a 90 minute feature, our 25 minute short is proportionally well below Ultra Low Budget standards, but without that old Return on Investment, "High Risk" suddenly becomes "All Risk" and stern advice soon follows to either make it on the cheap and sacrifice the richness of the physical environments and sensory detail that make the story great in the first place, or expand it out into a feature film and add 2/3 of my own material because its easier to get financing for a feature film than a short, diluting Wallace's great story in order to make a more commercial product.

My answer was the same every time. No. Those are not satisfactory options because they don't serve the story best. It is an incredible opportunity to adapt one of the greatest storytellers of our generation, and it deserves to be done right. It's an hallucinatory, detail rich story with several very specific locations that inform the story like a Golf Course clubhouse, and a Sleep Clinic wing of a hospital that are integral to its telling, yet like many other production elements, unattainable without an adequate budget.

Kickstarter presents a viable alternative model to traditional film financing. A platform where an involving short film project like OBLIVION with a larger scale and more moving parts will have the chance to be judged on its artistic merit and not by the amount of money it can generate, and where those with the most interest in the project are literally responsible for its very existence. Nothing could be more exciting for a filmmaker, so its a privilege to bring this film project to Kickstarter and ask for your help.

And that's where YOU come in. Our funding goal of $30,000 is the minimum it will take to bring our vision of David Foster Wallace's OBLIVION to life. Any pledge, whether its 5 dollars or 5000 dollars, brings us closer to our goal. If we don't reach 100% of our funding goal no one's card gets charged and we won't have the resources to make the film, so pledge as much as you can but most importantly Share, Tweet, and good old fashioned talk to your friends about our project and together we can make it a success.

To become one of our backers, just click on the big green button to the right of our video. Kickstarter will ask you for your pledge, which reward you want, and how you want to sign up. Signing up is easy; you can even do it through Facebook.

Thank you so much for taking a look at our page, and I hope you consider making a pledge and becoming part of our experience bringing David Foster Wallace's OBLIVION to life as a film.

Sincerely,

Francesco Marchione
Screenwriter / Director

SYNOPSIS

A domestic nightmare from one of this generations greatest storytellers. A marital conflict over snoring results in sleep deprivation, hallucination, and ultimately revelation.

PRODUCTION TEAM

Francesco Marchione,  Director / Screenwriter / Producer - Liz Magee, Producer - Darren E. Johnson, Line Producer - Jimmy Ferguson, Director of Photography - Franklin Vaughan - Sound Mixer/Designer - A. James Marcolin / Hilary Whitham, Associate Producers

PROJECT INFO

PRE-PRODUCTION - Pre-Production in its various forms has been underway for months with budgets, schedules, lots of other paperwork etc and once we are into the campaign we will begin to book and commit to those elements, (locations, equipment, etc) as well as Casting etc.

PRODUCTION - The film is scheduled for 5 shooting days on location and 1 studio day in August/September.

POST-PRODUCTION - Post-Production will begin immediately after shooting wraps. A complex picture edit and sound design process is planned to bring the fractured, dream-like nature of the story to life.

WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP

The reality is that it's very expensive to make a high quality film, even when its 25 minutes long. We are asking for $30,000 because that is the minimum amount we need to hire a great cast and production crew, rent equipment, arrange for access to locations, feed everyone, put gas in the trucks and pay for parking, and a million other decidedly un-sexy behind the scenes things that are necessary to make a motion picture. And for your pledge to this film, we have some really amazing ways to say Thank You...

INCENTIVES

The incentives below are the best way we can think of to say "Thank You" and give you the internet version of a bearhug for pledging to the OBLIVION Kickstarter campaign. We are really excited to make available blu-ray and dvd copies of the film, as there are no plans for a digital or online release. Other pledge levels offer copies of the shooting script, a beautiful 8x12 limited print run of the Teaser Poster for OBLIVION with original artwork by Alex Passapera, advanced copies of Greg Carlisle's upcoming book "Nature's Nightmare: Analyzing David Foster Wallace's OBLIVION", a digital production book, and even a Backers only screening of the film at NITEHAWK CINEMA in Brooklyn, NY with a reception to follow.

THEATRICAL SCREENING

The Nitehawk screening is very exciting because we firmly believe all movies deserve a chance to be seen on a large screen as it was intended. New York City has a wonderful history of David Foster Wallace related events from the "A Failed Entertainment" exhibition at Columbia University in 2010, John Krasinski's film of Brief Interviews with Hideous Men at the IFC Center, Daniel Fish's interpretation of "A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again" at the Bushwick Starr last year. We hope to continue in this tradition with an exclusive screening of the film for our Kickstarter backers, along with the cast and crew from the film.

NATURE'S NIGHTMARE: ANALYZING DAVID FOSTER WALLACE'S OBLIVION - by GREG CARLISLE

(Cover image Coming Soon)

We are also extremely lucky and a bit star-struck to be working with Greg Carlisle (author of Elegant Complexity) and Matt and John Bucher at Sideshow Media Group. Greg Carlisle's upcoming book "NATURE'S NIGHTMARE: Analyzing David Foster Wallace's OBLIVION" (paperback, 165 pages, SSMG) is coming out this fall, and Greg and SSMG are generously making a limited amount of advanced copies available to Kickstarter backers of the OBLIVION film project, before the books official publication date. Greg and I began a conversation a couple months ago about the fortuitous timing of our two projects, engaging with the same work in very different ways. He graciously made available his work on OBLIVION for my research and this led to making it possible for our Kickstarter campaign to offer these advanced copies of Nature's Nightmare. Perhaps now my (and your) dog-eared copy of Elegant Complexity will get a brief rest.

Nature's Nightmare
Analyzing David Foster Wallace's Oblivion
by Greg Carlisle
SSMG Press, October 2013
160 pages / 9 charts / paperback / ISBN-13: 978-0-9889305-1-3

From the author of Elegant Complexity comes a cogent analysis of David Foster Wallace's Oblivion. Nature's Nightmare is the first book of criticism devoted to Wallace's masterful story collection. Carlisle gives an in-depth narrative analysis of each story: Mr. Squishy, The Soul is Not a Smithy, Incarnations of Burned Children, Another Pioneer, Good Old Neon, Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature, Oblivion, and The Suffering Channel. Carlisle's methodical approach walks readers through Wallace's thematic interests and situates Oblivion in the broader arc of Wallace's career.  Every passage of each story is analyzed in terms of 1) interrelation of narrative forma and content, 2) relation of story to the theme of oblivion, 3) recurring thematic motifs in Wallace's work, and 4) assessment of content in relation to Infinite Jest and The Pale King. The book includes nine charts that illustrate various narrative devices Wallace employs throughout the stories. Jason Kottke called Elegant Complexity "the reference book for Infinite Jest" and now Nature's Nightmare is the primary reference work for Oblivion.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

Independent filmmaking is a Sisyphean task with no small amount of unforeseen circumstances. Below in no particular order are some of them related to bringing David Foster Wallace's OBLIVION to the screen.

We are planning to shoot the film in August or September and it is intended for submission to several prestigious film festivals beginning in the fall. Promise Dates for fulfillment of thank you gifts, including the theatrical screening, are based on these dates, and any number of circumstances (scheduling, availability of locations, equipment, people, etc) could cause these dates to change, so even if the delivery of an incentive gift has to be changed or delayed, trust that we're working tirelessly to make it happen and we will be in communication for the duration.
