Two of the biggest civic issues of our time. One shirt.
I am starting this project to fund an initial run of t-shirts and bumper stickers for a slogan that I hope will incite some fresh dialogue and critical thought into two of the most defining social issues of our time.
My goal is to shake up the reactionary, dogmatic, often hostile nature of the debate around these issues by presenting an intentionally abstract statement that might encourage people--whether consciously or not--to confront them from a uniquely quizzical, lighthearted perspective.
I need to make a very modest minimum order of 100 shirts to keep them affordable. Your donations will pay for only the basic essentials to make this happen: shirts, screen printing, bumper stickers, and shipping.
A bit more:
One of the fundamental problems with sociopolitical slogans is that upon achieving any widespread degree of public awareness or adoption, they tend to become visually innocuous. Their ability to trigger critical thought quickly gives way to predisposed, apathetic dismissals, often based purely upon the audience's preexisting biases.
The movements to legalize gay marriage and marijuana, while objectively unrelated, are two of the most important and contentious social issues of the past decade. With this project, I aim to approach both issues from a fresh perspective by combining them into a single, irreverent slogan that is almost certain to catch the greater public off guard.
Because 'Legalize Gay Marijuana' lacks any clear literal meaning, its power lies in the unexpected--a peripheral glance and cursory recognition of the adjacent words 'Legalize' and 'Gay,' or rather 'Legalize' and 'Marijuana,' will invite a traditional snap-judgement, but before the viewer is able to dismiss it, the cognitive dissonance created by this simple juxtaposition will force them to reassess the words themselves, as well as their intended meaning. Ultimately, the slogan's inherently abstract message will ignite the mechanisms of critical thought that are usually lost when viewing more conventional political slogans.
I am starting with a single, simple design, but once funded intend to expand the project with additional designs, formats, and artistic interpretations.
