You fill out a survey, I make you a necklace. It will be completely new, much like you, and much like this interaction.
Like many creative people, I've gone through phases of intense productivity and also ones where I felt disconnected from my practice. One of the reasons I step away from time to time is that making things can be a bit lonely. After a recent break I thought, what if I could use my medium of jewelry as a way of connecting with people and making something specifically for them? And so the necklace aura reading was born. This is how it works:
I'll send you a survey I developed to get a sense of your style, vibe, and your relationship to jewelry in general. Based on your responses I'll make you a custom necklace that I think will suit your sensibilities. The survey will be sent out once the project is complete, and then the fun will begin.
I use making as a method of deeply listening and paying careful attention, taking information in before putting creative energy out.
I'm a self-help junkie so the quiz is inspired by Meyers-Briggs, Enneagrams, and astrology. I am also interested in the role jewelry plays in your life. There's surprising variety in the ways people accessorize, and the history of the objects they consider dear enough to place on their bodies. I love learning about a relationship to adornment and channeling it back into a piece.
The necklaces are made out of sculpey which is a polymer clay I've been using since I was a preteen crafter. I like it because it's brightly colored, has a velvety texture, and is quite light. I use a number of techniques including simple sculpting, millefiori (where I make tiny patterns, slice them thinly, and apply them to clay) and mokume gane (where I mix differently colored clays and carve them to reveal patterns inside). Also just plain old sculpting.
Friends have both overlapping and distinct qualities and traits, which come out in the survey. If you choose the Friendship Necklace option, I'll make two necklaces that represent the interplay of these qualities. It's a different kind of way to celebrate the unique chemistry of a friendship and bring a piece of it with you even when you're not near each other.
A Bit More About Me
I work out of my home studio (that is, my apartment) and my day job is marketing creative work, but I'm at my happiest when I'm also making something of my own. In the past I've sold at craft fairs including the highly curated West Coast Craft event, and my work has been sold at boutiques and museum stores all over the country and beyond. Deadlines are my friend, and I enjoy being able to hone my craft through filling a high volume of orders.
Crucial to my process is my studio assistant Sabine who is a powerful intuitive and signs off on everything that gets made. Sign-off is demonstrated by batting at it, sniffing it, or ignoring it because she knows it's good to go and doesn't require her attention. Here she is during a particularly potent tarot reading.
I think this will be fun, and I can't wait to learn about you.
Risks and challenges
I'm very used to making the kind of jewelry I'm proposing, so I don't see many risks.
If you want it as a gift for the holidays, I'll make every effort to ship in time, but I can't guarantee it. If it's for yourself, I may deliver closer to January than December. I'll ask for your preference in the survey I'll send you once the project closes.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
