The Outs: just because it's over doesn't mean you're over it.
The Outs is a web show - like a TV show, but on the internet. It's six episodes long, and we've written all six episodes! This campaign will allow us to shoot and edit the last three and release them online for you to enjoy.
We released the first three over the last few months, and we've gotten an amazing response - people have e-mailed with kind words from all over the US, Canada, France, Australia, Germany and India! Plus you may have heard about us on Out.com, Homorazzi, The Huffington Post, Towleroad, Swish Edition or Queerty.
We're making the show because we want to watch the show, and it's not out there. Sometimes when you want something and it doesn't exist, you have to make it.
So: if you like the work we've done so far, and you want more of it, and you want to prove that there's a place for content like this elsewhere online (and even in other media), please kick in to help us make the last three episodes of the show the best they can possibly be!
Q. Wait a minute - $8,000? Why so much? Didn't the first three episodes cost $500 each?
A. No, in fact! Our initial goal was indeed $1,000 for two episodes, but we surpassed our goal by $600... and that still wasn't quite enough. Between renting necessary equipment, taking cabs to pick up that equipment, paying people for the use of space to shoot in, purchasing hard drives to store all of our precious data (each episode winds up taking up roughly 400GB of space, all told)... we ended up paying for a good chunk of the show out of pocket.
Which is fine (but not great)!
But: as we move into the second half of the show, we'd like to cover our bases. $8,000 seems like a lot of money - and it is - but it'll allow us breathing room to rent more, better equipment for longer. Which would mean no more 17-hour days for our unpaid cast and crew, as we could spread things out over a two-day shoot.
The show is great, but it can be better. That's the gist.
Q. What about beyond $8,000? That's really not that much, when you put it that way...
A. Beyond our goal things get really exciting: we can start paying our cast and crew for their time. They really deserve it.
Plus, we've got a little something special cooked up beyond our sixth episode, and if we surpass our initial goal it gets more and more likely... watch this space for more details!

First, as always, and we just can't say it enough: thank you for your support.
Particularly in the case of the Chanukah Special, we are all so pleased that we'll be able to make more of The Outs for you to enjoy. You're going to like it, trust us.
We could throw another Reach Goal at you so we can afford the killer lighting kit Jay wants or buy rollerblades for the cast and crew (this would make us more efficient), but here's the truth:
At this point we just want you to be part of the family. It's clear to us from the number of folks who've already contrbuted and the e-mails from around the world that the show has meaning for people, and by kicking in to help finish it you're joining the team.
This means that your donations from here on out go towards helping the artists on The Outs spend more time polishing the show and dedicating ourselves to giving you what you want. And if you need another reason, the more we raise right now, the more, better, and cheaper Outs-branded stuff we can put online so you can wear a little piece of the show out into the world and be all "Did you see The Outs? Yeah, you're welcome."
I guess I have my own person Reach Goal, if you want to know the truth. I would love to reach 500 backers. I'll be sharing the show with more people I love over the weekend, and maybe if you do the same we'll get there together.
The show could always be a little better with more financial support, but we couldn't be happier with the campaign so far.

Update #2: This one's a big one!
Wow, you people don't mess around, do you?
First and foremost, thank you for your support. This is an incredible moment for the show, and we're so proud to be sharing the project with you.
Now, let's talk about that next Reach Goal.
We've said from the beginning of the show that it's a six-episode package: one story with a beginning, a middle and an end (and actually one part that happens before the beginning, but you'll have to wait a bit to see what that's about). This is still true.
It's also true that the structure of the show is loosely based on the structure of British TV shows: The Office, Extras, Pulling and Downton Abbey are good examples of (wonderful) series that run six-episode seasons and follow them up with slightly longer Christmas-themed episodes.
So what we'd like to do is our own take on that: The Outs Chanukah Special.
But guys, you're almost definitely not saying, if the story has an ending, how are you going to make more of it? I don't want more of The Outs!
Hey girl: chill. Nothing about the remaining three episodes will change. The Chanukah Special will serve as an epilogue or a coda to the show to let you know where Jack, Mitchell and Oona are and what's happening with them. The more we think about this on our end of things, the more fun it sounds. The goal is for the special to run somewhere in the 25-30 minute range, which is why it will cost a little more to make - that's basically two regular-sized episodes for us.
So what goal do we need to hit to make this happen? We're gonna call it $20,000.
Things to remember:
-Once Kickstarter and Amazon take their (fair!) share of the campaign, this will leave us with $18,000 - or $6,000 for one extra-large episode, which works out perfectly, math-wise
-We would really like to make this thing for you
-I feel like two points is a bad number for a list, right?
Tote bag update!
Brian Fabry Dorsam, who handles all of our graphic design needs, has just delivered the design for our tote bags! It might change a little between now and when yours arrives in the mail, and the other side will but we're so in love with the art that we wanted to share it with you ASAP!
How great is that?! Thanks, Brian! I wouldn't be too surprised to see this on a poster sometime soon...

Update #1: Wow!
Jeez Louise! $9,000 in less than 48 hours! I guess we really are doing something right!
Thank you so much to everyone who has kicked in so far. It's incredible to know that so many of you like the show and want to see more of it. Each of us on this end has given so much to make the first three episodes, and we're thrilled that we'll be able to give you more in the coming weeks and months.
This is where things get fun. As we move past our goal, the next step is to begin compensating the artists, both on the cast and crew side of things, who have made the show possible. This is our priority for a few reasons, not the least of which are the blood, sweat, tears and time that these folks have themselves donated to producing The Outs.
Beyond that, we move into uncharted territory: we'd love to be able to host screenings for the new episodes in places other than New York (where we had about 125 people for the debut of the latest episode - it was a great party!), and as mentioned in the video, there's a cool idea taking shape about a little bonus content beyond our sixth episode. It's hard to put a number on this goal right now, but let's talk again when we've hit $12,000.
