About this project
Origins of the Chinese dumpling is a lunch event in New York City for all dumpling lovers and anyone who wants to learn more about Chinese culture. Held at Shanghai Cafe Deluxe in Manhattan’s Chinatown on Friday May 5th and Saturday May 20th, we will serve six courses of dumplings while telling stories about things like:
- Which was the first Chinese dumpling?
- Where do different Chinese dumplings originate?
- What are traditional dumpling fillings and what do they mean?
- What are the right sauces to accompany each dumpling?
- Where can you eat the best dumplings in New York City and beyond?
The meal will have many types of classic Chinese dumplings, including Huntun that is served in a flavorful soup. Jiaozi, which are delicious mouthfuls and almost a complete meal in every bite. Tangyuan with a sticky taste and sweet flavor. Har Gow that are tasty shrimp dumplings with translucent wrappers. Guotie with a tender-topped crisp-bottomed flavor, and Xiaolongbao that has juicy pork-and-crab meatball.
To thank you for your support of this project, I designed a series of six different 1.8”x7” bookmarks that each feature a different dumpling and includes information about traditional fillings and sauces.
For those of you who want to introduce dumplings to more friends, there are also postcards. Besides correct sauce pairings and traditional fillings, you will also learn which restaurant has the best version of that specific dumpling in NYC, and which one is the best in the world.

Who am I?
My name is Yue and I come from China. I'm currently an Interaction Design graduate student at the School of Visual Arts in New York. I like eating Chinese dumplings, especially Jiaozi, which family members traditionally got together to make for New Year’s Eve.
When I was a child, one of the things I enjoyed most during the Chinese New Year was finding a coin hidden in one of the Jiaozis, which promises the person who finds the coin good fortune in the New Year.
After I moved to New York City, I found out that a lot of people from all over the world like Chinese dumplings, yet few knew the stories behind each dumpling. So I created this event to introduce Chinese culture to more people in an engaging and meaningful way.
