Hi all, my name is Brett Brooks and I'm the author and illustrator of the graphic novel -
Over the course of the next few months, I'll be embarking on my sophomore attempt to not only tell a complex and engaging story, but to provide my faithful supporters with a visually entertaining journey. I'm very eager (and admittedly, a little nervous) to be exploring the world of color as a storytelling element throughout this book. Single-frame illustrations often take center stage for me, spanning everything from personal projects to clients such as Disney, Hard Rock Cafe, and Mars Inc. So, to step outside my realm of comfort and apply those same illustrious principles to the art of sequential storytelling is a pretty exhilarating concept for me.
My first graphic novel, Dust Bunny was funded on Kickstarter back in 2011, and proved to be a great success. It was a black and white crime-noir tale which served as a fantastic beginning to my still-young career as a content creator and professional storyteller. All of that to say, I'm very pleased to be firing up the engines again and rising to the next challenge.
One of the greatest joys I get from storytelling is telling stories about the process of telling stories! To put it more concisely, I'll be continually updating the Deuces Wild website and Facebook page with content as I create! Blog updates, sketches, maybe a video...possibly even a few finished pages. To get an idea of how I did it last time, you can check out the video below from Dust Bunny's Kickstarter run! The rest of Dust Bunny's videos can be found here!
While Dust Bunny certainly proved to be a challenge all its own - 180 pages from a perceived 120 page intent - it nurtured me into a more disciplined and focused creator; variables of a larger function that I'm very eager to put back into practice towards the start of this new project.
Everything pledged towards Deuces Wild will be put directly back into the production of the book itself, including materials, shipping, and printing. From the bottom of my heart, I appreciate any and all support that you can give this comic, even if it's linking it to someone you think may like it more than you! In any case, I'm happy to include the Kickstarter community on this new adventure, and can't wait to see what the next few months have in store! Onward!
Risks and challenges
As a full-time illustrator, were any shortcomings of funds or time to arise, I would be obligated to reach out for client-based work in order to keep the dream alive. This could potentially stunt the timeline of the comic's release. That's the not-so-great news.
But the oh-so-great news is that the more support I receive from you, my amazing backers, the more time I can invest into the book itself!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
