My name is Dutch ReBelle.
I am an artist from Boston, and I’m so excited to share The Bang Bang Experience with you.
I started writing poems that turned into raps when I was young, and I've been making music ever since. In 2014, I won a Boston Music Award for Best Hip Hop Artist. In 2017, I was nominated for 3 more. And now I'm preparing to create the next evolution of my music: "Bang Bang."
On Kiss Kiss, I was really polishing my hip hop sound. On Bang Bang, I’m evolving; I'm exploring my vocal range and refining my lyricism. I’m incorporating Caribbean and African sounds inspired by my Haitian-Dominican upbringing and my world travels.
I also want to uncover in my lyrics what revolutionary feminism means for me and my fans in a multi-layered, complex world. I’m a firm believer that you have to be who you are. My sound embodies that.
Because of these boxes that they try to put us in, people don’t get to be the rap chick from Mattapan and turn on The Red Hot Chili Peppers at the same time. You don’t often see multifaceted women that are the sex pot, the soul sister, and the boss chick all in one.
My fans, the ReBelle Army, know that we are all of these things and then some. Real people are much more layered and complex than the mainstream would have us believe. My fans know that I’m a "blow-up-the-box" kind of chick. I see myself as a translator and a movie maker, relaying the real images that I see back to the people. It’s easy to get told what’s "cool" from the powers that be. But the people say what’s "cool." That’s why I’m creating this project independently—like all my previous projects—under my own label, ReBelle Music.
The Bang Bang Experience will continue our ongoing conversation and creativity that are separate from the industry and major label influence. Independent music helps us break the boxes, reach real-ness, and connect to each other. I don’t care about the blogs, and I don’t care about who’s writing about this and who’s talking about that. The people say what’s cool. Bang Bang will remind the majors that it's always been that way.
I have real fans and an authentic following, and I want to champion that. It's what tastemakers and curators should be doing. It should be organic and real and take back the art from industry.
Let the fans rock!
So, how do you come in? This KickStarter is a way for us to create our own lane, for us to continue to support dope shit. "Do dope shit!" is one of my mottos. "Dopeness" is what feel right, no matter who’s watching. My fans know this. People who like my music already speak my language. This wave is bigger than me, and the world needs the energy that the ReBelle Army is bringing.
It's expensive to make an album. Between studio time, mixing, mastering, production—it takes time and money to make music that matches the sonic quality of what’s on the radio. I’m at the top level of what I can do by myself, and I know that the wave I’m riding isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
Supporting Bang Bang isn’t just about supporting me as an artist. It’s about rocking with me so that we can share this type of energy with anybody who needs it.The support of my fans is going to make Bang Bang the beginning of the next level.
I’m an immigrant. To be here at all is a big deal. I feel so fortunate to have come from Haiti and grown up in the United States, let alone to have such incredible support from my fans for my music. I’ll be damned if I’m not going to ride this wave to the fullest and thank everyone for letting me do it at the same time!
I wanted to give you, my fans, the chance to get involved in the creative process. Not only can you pre-order the project with a digital download or a physical copy of the CD, but you have the chance to get directly involved in the production of it. Whether you want to submit a beat, appear in a music video, or promote a show, here is your chance to directly play a role in the Bang Bang experience.
The Bang Bang Experience is about collaborating with my community and supporters. I’m looking forward to creating music, media, and marketing with fellow creative thinkers and do-ers. The rewards listed are not meant to be restrictive. If you are a makeup artist or clothing stylist, a poet, a producer, a photographer or a director who wants to get involved in the project in a way that’s not listed—please reach out!
With show rewards, I'm so excited to bring my music to new places and meet new crowds through this campaign. Spreading the buzz and getting people excited all over the country will elevate the ReBelle Army to the next level.
Risks and challenges
There are always risks when producing and promoting a studio album, but I've learned a lot in my experience and we know just what to do to deliver this project efficiently.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
