About this project
SuperOrganizations: Nature’s Game-Changing Guide To Faster, Smarter, More Valuable Companies describes the core values that ultra-social animals like ants, honeybees, and termites use to coordinate and collaborate for sustainable abundance, even when resources are scarce and unpredictable.
Hi there, Kickstarters! My name is Dr. Tamsin Woolley-Barker, and I’m writing a book!
For the past year and a half, I've been pouring my heart and soul into researching and writing SuperOrganizations: Nature’s Game-Changing Guide To Faster, Smarter, More Valuable Companies. In it, I describe how radical collaborators (like ant colonies and honeybee hives) work together to create value, and how we can mimic them in our own organizations to do the same thing.
20 years of personal research and experience has given me over 200 pages of biological and business examples, collected and distilled into six simple strategies, easy to implement, and proven to work.
SuperOrganizations may be an entirely new way to run our companies, but the rest of nature has been doing business this way for hundreds of millions of years. Did you know that the biomass of all the ants on Earth is about the same as the weight of all of us? It’s true, but you don’t see them choking on smog or sitting in traffic. It’s not that there are too many of us, it’s just that we’re doing it wrong! I believe we can fix that. But I need your help to put the finishing touches on this book and put it out there!
I believe the best way to walk the talk here is to self-publish. I believe in that model. And I also believe in the collective intelligence of the Kickstarter SuperOrganization- each one of YOU- because that’s how nature would do it! The more money I can raise, the more time I can dedicate to the final touches: editing, designing, printing, and marketing this book. The book will be better, and you’ll get your hands on it faster. This is a movement, and the time is now for a well-reasoned, scientifically-based, accessible, and common sense platform we can all take to the bank. If the ants can do it, so can we.
What do I need to succeed?
I am asking for $15,000 to cover all the editing, design, illustration, and digital publication costs. If I can raise more, I can also cover print costs for hard copies, as well as producing an audiobook versions.
My first-tier expenses include:
- Some late-stage research and writing
- Design and Illustration
- Editing and Proofing
- eBook conversion
- Amazon and Kickstarter fees
This will let me get the book written and designed and made into an e-book for sale through Amazon and other outlets.
I have a stretch goal wish-list as well. If I raise enough funds, I can do these things too:
- Audiobook recording and publication
- Print hard copies, available through Amazon and other outlets
- Ship hard copies
- Book promotion
Ultimately, I am creating an entire series of Action-Module Workshops, Workbooks, and pre-recorded webinars, with the goal of making SuperOrganizations the standard for corporations and institutions everywhere.
Your support will ensure that SuperOrganizations is completed and released in a timely manner, with high-quality production standards. The estimated eBook release date is June 2015, and the print copy will hopefully fall into place soon after. I've created some nice rewards that I hope will encourage you to support me. If you have any questions about SuperOrganizations, this project, or if you have a specific incentive package request, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Why should you want to read this book?
Wouldn’t you like to know how nature accelerates change, spreads ideas, and attracts customers (like a bee carrying your pollen from one flower to another), maximizes resilience, minimizes competition, creates effective security systems, builds sustainable industries, eliminates waste, and nurtures the perfect conditions for disruptive innovation? Nature has perfected at least 30 million ways of doing pretty much everything you want your business to do. And this book intends to tell you how to do it!
But wait! You’re saying. People are not ants! I don’t want to be a mindless drone in a machine, a six-legged scurrying quasi-clone drudge! Isn’t The Ant Way anathema to art, love, and happy hour? Humanity’s best features? All we hold dear?
Well luckily for you, even though I'm a huge fan of the social insect set, I’m also a primatologist. I know monkeys! Apes like us have our own way of doing things. We’ve got evolutionary ‘baggage’ that we have to work with, not against. That’s why I scatter “Uniquely Primate” segments throughout the book, describing the unique human glue that holds our super-organism together.
What else have I written?
I write about life science, design, and sustainable business practices for various magazines. I have a regular column called ‘The Biomimicry Manual,’ on Inhabitat.com (a sustainable design magazine), with posts like these:
What Can Dung Beetles
Teach Us About the Circular Economy?
What Can Sloths Teach Us About Energy Efficiency?
What Can Crows Teach Us About The Sharing Economy?
What Can Water Fleas Teach Us About Innovation?
How Do Beavers Create Business Opportunity?
What Can Paper Wasps Teach Us About 3D Printing?
and many more.

Why am I writing this book?
I’m writing this because I know the brilliant and super-efficient ways nature makes a living, and I want leaders and regular folks to know about them too. These are simple techniques that have evolved over and over again, because they work! I know by tapping into 4 billion years of evolution, we can create a smarter, more resilient, people-planet-profit-friendlier future for us all.
Thank you for your support, and I look forward to helping you create YOUR SuperOrganization!
Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge, as with any book, is fulfilling the research, writing, and publishing logistics by the set dates. At present, I have over 200 pages written, and an awesome table of contents. I have plenty of supporting case studies from both the business and the biology side. I dedicate every workday to researching and writing (I am my own full-time job). I need a little more research, and of course, new case studies come to my attention almost daily. For the most part, however, what remains is editing and storytelling, making the case for SuperOrganizations so compelling that you can’t help but act on it! I am confident I will have the Quick Guide ready by April 2015, and the e-book itself by June 2015. Even if something unforeseen comes up, I will absolutely be delivering these Rewards in a timely and conscientious manner. Bottom line: if you pre-buy any item here you will get it!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
