UPDATE: We have now reached our "stretch goal" and will be able to bring Steve Freund to be part of this DVD, too!!!!
This is HUGE for our film as Steve is truly one of the greatest traditional Blues guitar players alive today. Thank you so much everyone. We are incredible grateful for your support and kind words and encouragement. We are bound and determined to put together the very best DVD we possibly can.
This film will capture the intensity, excitement, and raw energy of the live Blues experience in a small club environment. Complete with extensive interviews with the artists themselves as well as full length song performances, this is a chance for these Blues artists to tell their story, in their own words, of their experiences over many decades of playing & living the Blues, as well the life & music lessons they learned from touring with some of the greatest musicians of all time.
Professionally shot by Andrew LaValley (Mad Toast Live & Bear Sound) and directed by A.J. Love, this DVD will feature some of the greatest Chicago Blues musicians alive today, many of whom have never appeared before on a commercially available DVD (despite their vast accomplishments) . This DVD will be recorded live at the Knuckle Down Saloon in Madison, WI in November & December of 2012, over various Friday night performances.
It is expensive to film, edit, and produce a DVD, and by Pre-Ordering the DVD and/or sponsoring the film, you will help us make this incredible project happen! This is a film that needs to be made NOW, while these great artists are alive and in their prime.
UPDATE: Because of the overwhelmingly positive response to this DVD project, we
feel confident that we can add an additional night of filming and are
thrilled to announce that JOHN PRIMER will be appearing on the DVD!!!! http://www.johnprimerblues.com
---- This DVD just got bigger, better and more expensive! As most of
you know, John Primer is one of the all-time greats of traditional
Chicago Blues. He toured with Muddy Waters, and Magic Slim, and is an
award-winning Bluesman who performs worldwide.
Thank you so very much everyone!
We will only receive the funds from Kickstarter if the project is fully funded (i.e. reaches the $1500 goal). The $1500 will cover the cost of filming and editing the DVD itself. Then there are still the costs remaining of manufacturing the DVD's, plus the T-Shirts & CD's, and if need be we can cover those costs, but we are hoping to surpass our $1500 goal.
Some of the artists scheduled to appear include:
John Primer - A living legend of traditional Chicago Blues, John Primer toured with Muddy Waters, Magic Slim and Willie Dixon before embarking on a solo career of his own that has brought him great accolades and worldwide acclaim. John Primer is "the Real Deal" in Blues music. http://www.johnprimerblues.com
Oscar Wilson - An under-appreciated gem from the Southside of Chicago, Oscar "43rd Street" Wilson is part Muddy Waters, part Cedric the Entertainer and a true crowd igniter. Standing over 6'3" tall and weighing over 250 pounds, this larger-than-life front man carries on in the tradition of the great Chicago bluesmen like the Howlin' Wolf, Jimmy Rogers, and Muddy Waters. Wilson has toured with the Cash Box Kings and has performed with Johnny B. Moore & Melvin Taylor. A truly incredible Blues voice, and an extremely entertaining person to interview!. Oscar Wilson's "Cash Box Kings" band website: http://www.cashboxkings.com/
Billy Flynn - a Grammy Award winning guitarist who has toured with Otis Rush, Jimmy Dawkins, The Legendary Blues Band, The Kim Wilson Blues Revue, The Chicago Blues: A Living History Band and many more, Billy Flynn played the guitar parts on the soundtrack for the film "Cadillac Records". One of the world's greatest and most in-demand Blues guitarists, as well as a great harmonica player, Billy Flynn's performance abilities and insights into the Blues world are not to be missed.
Peewee Hayes - A mesmerizing guitarist, vocalist, and performer, Peewee Hayes is all about Real Blues music. Peewee Hayes is a great example of one of the reasons why we feel this film needs to be made. The whole world should get a chance to see just how amazing Peewee Hayes is....
Michael Morrison --- One of the stars of the film is bassist/vocalist Michael Morrison. Morrison has been part of the Chicago Blues scene for over 30 years now. He toured with James Cotton, Willie Dixon, Luther Allison & John Primer, recorded with Buddy Guy (The "DJ Play My Blues Album") and has shared the stage with a who's who of Hall of Fame Blues Greats. He has amazing stories and insights about the Blues and is one of the true living masters of the Blues bass.
Charles Hayes "The Delta Blues Hog" --- Another under-appreciated gem in the Blues world is Charles Hayes. In the early days of his life he grew up around some of Americas greatest Blues musicians such as Sleepy John Estes, Yank Rachell, Washboard Sam, B.B. King, Little Milton, the original Sonny Boy Williamson, and his father, the late Roland ‘Blue Dad’ Hayes. Charles has toured Europe with many Blues greats, yet he has never (until now!) been on a commercially available DVD. Charles "The Delta Blues Hog" Hayes is one of the reasons we feel this film needs to be made. Charles learned blues while his dad played guitar with neighbor Washboard Sam. From his first pro gig backing up Sonny Boy Williamson, Charles has been hitting the jukes laying out hard edged guitar blues from Mississippi to California to Illinois. This is blasting 50s styled blues that’s smokin’ hot and inense! And wow, the stories this guy can tell.....http://www.reverbnation.com/thedeltablueshog
Merle Perkins - Many know Merle from his years touring with his band Merle Perkins & The Perkolators, and from touring with Junior Wells & Buddy Guy, Lonnie Brooks, & Eddie Clearwater. Merle is one of the Blues' all time great drummers with a powerhouse shuffle that can drive any band (and blues dancer) to greater heights. His participation in this film is an essential ingredient, it wouldn't be the same without him! Merle is over 60 years old now but playing as strong as ever, and we feel it is essential that we capture his wisdom and playing on film!
Rockin' Johnny Burgin - Rockin' Johnny began his Chicago Blues career playing in the ghetto clubs of Chicago's West Side with blues singer Taildragger, and then touring nationally as a sideman with former Howlin' Wolf drummer Sam Lay and blues piano legend Pinetop Perkins. After learning from the masters, he put his own band together, taking a Monday night residency at The Smoke Daddy in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood. Their original, energetic approach soon made them a strong local draw week after week and year after year. The atmosphere the band generated was so electric, that Delmark Records offered them a contract after hearing just one set. A true "musician's musician",Rockin' Johnny has been one of Chicago's most in-demand blues session men since the 90s, contributing his incisive playing to over a dozen CDs by artists such as Billy Boy Arnold, Jimmy Burns, Tail Dragger, Little Arthur Duncan, Paul DeLay and many more. http://www.rockinjohnnyband.com/
Omar Coleman - A phenomenal vocalist and harmonica player from the west side of Chicago, Omar Coleman has toured all over North America with John Primer and worldwide with own band. He has performed over the years with Hubert Sumlin, Sean Carney, Katherine Davis and hundreds more. Truly one of the greatest Blues vocalists anywhere, Omar is a huge addition to our DVD... http://omarcoleman.com/live/
Tom Holland - Holland has toured the world as the guitarist for the legendary James Cotton for 9 years now, and before that toured with John Primer, Eddie Clearwater and many others. An incendiary guitarist deeply rooted in traditional Chicago Blues, Holland is a rising star in the Blues world and we're thrilled to have him as part of this film.
Gerry Hundt - Bass, Guitar, Drums, Vocals, Harmonica, Mandolin, Gerry Hundt does it all. And sometimes he does it all at once. His "one man band" where he plays drums, guitar, harmonica and sings ALL AT THE SAME TIME has to be seen to be believed and we're looking forward to featuring a song from SteadyGroove, "the one man band", in our film. Gerry has toured the world with Nick Moss & the Flip Tops and has performed with Blues greats such as Lurrie Bell, Ralph Kinsey, Barrelhouse Chuck & many others. http://steadygroove.weebly.com/
Queenie McCarter - a fantastic vocalist with a dynamic, commanding stage presence, Queenie McCarter has begun making a name for herself in the Blues world playing Festivals and clubs throughout the midwest with her band "Queenie & The Blue Cats". Hailing from the south side of Chicago and presently living in Madison WI, Queenie brings a lifetime of living the Blues to every performance and always rocks the house.
A.J. Love - The Producer/Director of the film as well as a guitarist, A.J. Love is a musician devoted to playing & promoting traditional Chicago Blues music. Based in Madison WI, Love is strongly influenced by Eddie Taylor, Robert Lockwood Jr., Louis Myers, Earl Hooker, Otis Rush and other Chicago greats.
Love has been hired for shows to play with Willie "Big Eyes" Smith, John Primer, and Nick Moss, and has been fortunate enough to be mentored by Billy Flynn over the last 3 years...
"I'm an old man who thinks like a young man, and A.J. is a young man who thinks like an old man." -- John Primer
