About

“Because of who I am” follows Nils and Benjamin, filmmakers from Berlin, on a journey through a divided world. While LGBTIQ rights are leaping forward in half the world, much of the rest of the globe is fighting against the very existence of sexual minorities.

Beginning their journey in the relatively free environment of Berlin, Nils and Benjamin meet gay and lesbian artists who are now in exile in Europe because it is simply too dangerous to be who they are in their countries of origin.

Through theatre and dance, London-based Mojisola Adebajo deals with the issue of corrective rape of lesbian women in Nigeria. Ultraorthodox Jewish photographer Benyamin Reich explores the border between spirituality and sexuality in his photographs. Dancer Mamela Nyamza from Cape Town reflects on lesbian discrimination in her world famous dance performances. Lebanese singer Hamed Sinno openly sings about his love for men, as lead singer of  Middle East hit rock band Mashrou’ Leila. Academy Award winner, scriptwriter, Dustin Lance Black reminds us all about the importance of standing up for equality. Through the perspective of our protagonists, the film explores the power of art and artists to influence reality, and its emotional power to point out the needs of change in our society.

The film is directed by Benjamin Cantu and Nils Boekamp, produced by Boekamp & Kriegsheim GmbH in Berlin in co-production with ARTE/RBB and the Medienboard Berlin Brandeburg. It will be presented in a special premiere event in Berlin on the 18th June and broadcasted on ARTE/RBB on June 24!

Outreach and Impact!!!! The film is finished and now it must be seen in the places where it is most needed!! “Because of who I am” has the potential to create change and inspire hope. To do this we are creating an ambitious outreach campaign to move the film out of the Cinema/TV circuit and into the countries where LGBTIQ people have no rights and no voice! Join us and help make this possible:

  • A film tour from Europe to the countries of origin of our protagonists: Lebanon, Nigeria, Morocco, Israel, Russia, South Africa, USA.
  • An outdoor billboard campaign in each target country aiming to provoke, build interest, and put the issue on the map.
  • An interactive website to access information about the film, the tour and to request screenings.

We have partnered with Amnesty International Germany to bring the film to small cities and towns across Germany first, inviting institutions, school officials, and faculty, both in schools, community centers, art galleries and cinemas. As we tour Germany, we will organize our International tour to the countries of origins of our protagonists : Nigeria, Russia, Israel, Morocco, Lebanon, South Africa and U.S.A. We are aware that in many countries, the situation is very delicate and dangerous, and we will organize screenings in safe environments with the help of Amnesty International, LGBTIQ organizations on the ground, and cultural institutions such as the Goethe Institute. We believe that once a successful screening takes place, word will travel via social media and our www.becauseofwhoiam.com website, and more screenings will be requested.

To put the issue on the map in the places where the film will arrive, we are creating a provocative outdoor billboard & poster campaign. Billboards will “pop up” in public spaces in every city where we plan a screening as well as circulate on all social media, stirring debate. They will not be advertising the screening itself, but pointing out issues of LGBTIQ stereotypes and discrimination, to stimulate interest days before the screening as well as after. We asked each visual artist in the film to donate an image of their work to be converted into a billboard:

  • Mojisola Adebajo gave us a unique picture of her performance in Antarctica by photographer Del Lagrace Vulcano!
  • Photographer Benyamin Reich donated one of his most well known photos.
  • Mamela Nyamza contributed with a photo from one of her own stage performances!

Together we chose provocative and stereotypical “slogans” to accompany each picture in order to be strong and provocative. We will print billboards in both large 3 x 2 meters horizontal and smaller poster sizes. Where possible, we will approach billboard space owners to support our awareness initiative, with the help of the international network of Amnesty.

A special printed edition of our billboard is available as reward! Choose one or the full collection signed by each artist!!!
Billboard will lead to www.becauseofwhoiam.com website. Here users will find information on the screenings of the film and the story behind each billboard, the artists portrayed, the meaning of the picture as well as up-to-date information on LGBTIQ rights and discrimination in the country of origin of the artists, collected by Amnesty International.

You can privately screen our documentary and/or download it in HD (July 2015)

We are printing a special LIMITED EDITION (only 100 copies) version of each artist's billboard, on a special heavy watercolor paper in a special collections size 42 x 60 cm ( 16’x 23’). Collect the one you like best or check out the special "collection deluxe package" with all 3 prints. All billboards in the LIMITED EDITION will be signed by each artist.

Do you want to be our Keynote speaker? Check out the ultimate reward!!! You will be giving a 10 minute speech at our opening event on June 18th at Sophien Saele in Berlin, at the film premiere. You will speak in front of all our distinguished guests: national and international press, members of the German film and TV industry, the film cast and crew, producers, directors as well as activists and members of our partner organizations: Schwule Museum Berlin, Deutsches Historisches Museum, ARTE/ RBB, Amnesty International Germany.

The full budget for our campaign is of 65.000 Euros, to allow us to run the campaign for 6 full months and travel in all the countries, always in cooperation with Amnesty and local associations. Please help us do it right!

The 30.000 we are asking you to help us raise will be used to:

  • to create the official international language version of the film in English, which will we the one to travel, together with a French and German version as well.
  • to cover the graphics and printing costs the billboards in 7 different languages and in 3 different outdoor posting sizes.
  • cover the expenses to organize the film tour in each country starting in September 2015 until end of February 2016.
  •  we will cover part of the salary for a “campaign coordinator” working together with local organizations and Amnesty to make the tour possible
  • hire a web moderator to follow the online campaign and social media during the tour.

We have also applied for two specific funds to support “impact” actions to cover the rest of the budget. The remaining 35.000 euros  int he budget will allow us to create the "interactive platform" for the campaign! This means that after and if we will go over our 30.000 Euros goal... You can help us create the interactive web project connected to the campaign and the film:

www.becauseofwhoiam.com  is now the website for the film. Once the campaign will be funded we will change it into the “home of the campaign”, an interactive web-platform. Here, users will be able to:

  • follow the screenings around the world
  • access a “map” of the artists involved and investigate the LGBTIQ rights situation in each country (thanks to the contribution of Amnesty International)
  • access the gallery with all the original billboards created for the campaign, with the possibility to share them on social networks or ask for download.
  • We will launch an open-call to many international LGBTIQ artists, we could not include in the film, to join the billboard campaign by sending one of their art pieces to create their own online billboard.
  • LGBTIQ associations world wide will be able to download the billboards as printable “tool kit” to use for their own pro-equality initiatives.

Risks and challenges

PROBLEM SOLVING & SAFETY
We are aware of the many problems surrounding LGBTIQ issues in many of the countries we are aiming at like Russian and some of the African countries. For each country we will count on the help of the local Amnesty International chapter or representative as well as local LGBTIQ organizations, activists and the network that each of our artists/ protagonists has on the ground.
Moreover to secure a safe and respectful screening environment for the audience, we aim to collaborate with the Goethe Institute as well as well as many foreign cultural associations in each country to host the screenings, in places where it could become harmful for the audience.
We are very happy and encouraged by the great support received in terms of assistance and organization by Amnesty International Germany as well as the Schwules Museum Berlin.
