I want to start a movement. But it all starts with you. WE CAN DO THIS.
Who Is Lil Dicky:
I'm a goddamn rapper, that's who I am. 6 months ago, I began my journey when I put out my debut mixtape, "So Hard". In addition to that, I released a new song or music video once a week for 5 straight months.
If you haven't seen my work, please check some of it out below. You'll see that I've got a pretty unique approach to the rap game. I try to keep it real and relatable. And light-hearted. And sexy.
There's a lot more to see, but I've got a kickstarter campaign to discuss. You can see the rest of my stuff at http://lildicky.com/.
Why I Need You Guys:
To fund the initial phase of my operation, I had to dig into my own savings. I also gave all of my content away for free, so I've made no profits off of this endeavor to this point. In fact, I'm running this whole operation at a pretty substantial deficit.
32 songs, and 15 music videos later, I've officially run out of money. My bar mitzvah cash has run its course.
On top of that, I just quit my day job to pursue rap full time.
If you can't see it by now, this leaves me in quite the predicament. Not only do I have no money left, but I've also got no income coming in.
The thing is, I know I'm on to something. In a little over 6 months I've garnered 11.5 million YouTube views, over 95k subscribers, and all of this was accomplished without any machine or company behind me.
People are really liking what I'm doing. And personally, I've never felt more alive. Every morning, I wake up with a huge grin, and an enormous sense of optimism.
So I need to keep going. I genuinely believe that this thing can become huge, on a national level. You know what, maybe even on a global level. I bet China would go nuts over this shit.
But to continue, I'm going to need funding. And to evolve and grow as an artist, everything needs to be elevated. I need a way to increase my production value, both musically, and and in the quality of the music videos. Every song has been made in my street facing room, on Garageband. I can only imagine what a real studio would do for me.
The output needs to continuously improve if I want to maintain momentum.
And to maintain complete creative control, I REALLY want to avoiding aligning myself with a company (ie a record label) that would restrict me, both creatively and financially. Once someone else is calling the shots, it can really inhibit the artist. In looking at my work, you'll see it isn't necessarily "corporate-friendly" content.
I want to create things without feeling handcuffed by a larger company. I want to make social commentary, politically incorrect statements, and absurd jokes, because that's who I am.
I NEED YOU GUYS TO LET ME BE ME.
So I'm coming to you. Together, I know we can pull this off. And I know it will be awesome.
What are you funding?
In a nutshell, you are funding phase two of my rap career.
You are letting me continue my quest to change rap forever.
That includes the following:
- Music (an album)
- Music Videos (for songs off of that album)
Inherent in these items are costs. Here's a brief look at what I mean.
Music - An album will cost me money in studio time, production, mixing and mastering, and sessions with producers to create original beats. The album will also need to be pressed, printed, and distributed, both digitally and in stores.
Music videos - These will unquestionably be the biggest costs. I want to create some of the most unforgettable videos in the history of rap. To do that properly, it's going to require some serious resources. Check out my videos above. You'll see I'm not scared to push boundaries.
The more money I get, the more videos I can make, and the CRAZIER these videos can become. We live in America, people. So with ample funding, there's really nothing that can't be bought. What do you guys want to see? I'll make it happen.
From special effects, to models, to props, to extras, to locations, to condoms, these videos can add up. And to do them the right way, financial flexibility is essential.
Trust me, I'll make my next round of videos unforgettable if I can get the funding to do so.
Touring - Once the album drops, I'd love the opportunity to perform live and share this music with my fans in person. There are tons of hard costs associated with touring, such as hiring a crew, transportation costs, a DJ, hype man, stage equipment, etc.
Obviously, there is a base line total it would cost to create a simple show. However, the more funding I get, the more interesting these shows can become.
I don't want my shows to just be a guy on stage rapping. They can be way more than that. But to make things cooler, they require resources, bodies, props, stunts, etc. So the more I get, the more freedom I'll have creatively to develop the perfect show.
I tried to provide some incentivizing rewards in return for your help. Look to the right, and you can see the options.
This Kickstarter is currently the ONLY place in the world where one can get Lil Dicky apparel.
This Kickstarter is also the only place to "pre-order" the new album, and you'll get it a full weekend before the general public does.
The rewards get even better as they move on up the tiers. From Skype sessions, to basketball dates, all the way to video game battles, or even a duet...the world is our oyster.
Everybody wins here. If you donate, you'll be getting something hot and fresh. I'll be getting funding.
And together, we can rise to the top of Hip Hop. Think about how much swagger we'll have once we arrive. An unprecedented amount of swagger is at stake here, people. Let's go get it.
Risks and challenges
Fortunately for me, the execution of this is fairly simple.
I have to make music, make music videos, and perform. Obviously, there are risks and challenges with everything in life. I could have difficulty finding the right producers. I could get writer's block and go batshit crazy. I could have trouble finding capable directors to direct videos under budget.
But having already created similar content before, I can tell you that the risks aren't likely to become realities. It's a very simple industry, it all comes down to being resourceful, organized, and driven. And I'm all of those things.
The album WILL be made. Videos WILL be made. Shows WILL happen. It's just a matter of how long putting it all together at a high level will take.
It's not if, it's when. But the only thing in my way is funding. And that's what this Kickstarter is for.
I LOVE YOU ALL. HELP ME GET THERE. I'LL TAKE YOU WITH ME.
