About

Our Story

I began beekeeping in the most unusual of ways, whilst at university I maintained an allotment. One day I was searching the internet and found a compost bin that someone was offering as a free to collect deal, so I enquired and set off to go pick it up. Unbeknown to me at the time the couple that I was about to meet were beekeepers and wanted to know if I was interested in the hobby. As an ever inquisitive person I said 'Yes I was interested'. They taught me all they knew and donated me their equipment, as they wanted to ensure that their hobby was continued. This was the start of a journey that is still unravelling today.

We have found that we can never meet the demand for our locally produced honey and have been offered to stock it in local shops. With this funding we aim to increase production and hopefully get to a stage where we can meet the local demand for our product.

Aim

The main aim of this project is to expand our apiaries and create two new sites. Whilst creating a bee friendly habitat around the hives by planting varieties of plants that flower during the winter months. Ensuring an all year round supply of nectar for our bees.

The purpose of this is to spread our honey production out in order to produce increased yields of honey to sell locally. In turn it will increase the variety of honey we can produce as separate sites mean different varieties of nectar. It will also provide protection for our bees from diseases, as we can separate operations across various sites. So far on our apiary in Glatton, Near Peterborough we have six hives, with this project we are looking at expanding by a further four colonies.

We would also like to use a small portion of the funding to buy a new honey extractor as ours has been loved but used many times over the years, as it was donated by a very kind individual.

Our aim would be to put three new hives at each of the two new sites, two of which would have a colony of bees and the other would be spare in case a colony could be split. This would give us a great basis for further expansion of each site in the coming years.

About Us

We have been beekeeping for nearly ten years it is a fulfilling and unpredictable hobby, it involves keeping to a schedule of checking the hives for problems and diseases. It has been a truly unique experience allowing us to understand nature from a new perspective. It opens your eyes to the importance of bees and how many crops rely on the humble insect. We take pride in our job as beekeepers and are passionate about the field, we take the up most care of our bees inspecting them at least once a week during the season to ensure healthy hives, to monitor and prevent swarming and to ensure large enough honey stores are being produced. Our queens are marked according to the year and replace them on average every three years to promote healthy and productive colonies. We use mainly the British National Hive and Commercial Hives but do have two Smith hives. Our bees are protected using varora mesh floors which we make and many of the other parts ourselves.

We have recently developed our website and have decided to turn our hobby into a full time business.

Risks and challenges

The main risks and challenges involved are similar to any farming business. The weather can have a huge impact on the amount of honey the bees can produce and also how well they take in their first year. Unfortunately the perils of winter and the anxious wait until spring to open hives and see how the bees have coped will still be a daunting task. By creating a bee friendly habitat around the apiaries we aim to minimise the loss of bees during winter and early spring by giving them a local source of food, this in turn will reduce the need for feeding bees sugar syrup.

Other factors include known bee diseases such as European and American foul brood. Although this is a concern so far we have avoided any such cases and we have been keeping bees for nearly ten years now.
