"To me, the smell of fresh-made coffee is one of the greatest inventions." Hugh Jackman
Confluence Coffee Co is a craft coffee brewery specializing in ready-to-drink coffees. Our first line of products were three flavors of oaked cold brew coffee (Original Oak, Lemon, and Mocha), a creation that perfectly combined the art of coffee making with craft beer making techniques to yield a delicious drink unlike anything else available. We've been serving this cold brew in glass bottles and on nitro stout taps but now it's time to have your cake and eat it too: we're setting out to launch nitro cans! Soon you'll be able to have the deliciousness of a nitro cold brew anywhere you go!
You might have a few questions, so let us try and answer them proactively.
First, why are we "oaking" our coffee, and what does that even mean?
Well that's a great question. "Oaking" is a process we developed where we incorporate the same oak used in wine making (and often now beer making too) to contribute to our final product. The result is a natural sweetness from the oak that helps to highlight the beans' sweetness (yes good coffee has sweet notes). The oaking process also helps us maintain consistency between batches. Thus, our brewing process yields a delicious drink every time.
So what's all this "nitro" talk?
"Nitro" refers to nitrogen gas which is used in pressurizing certain beers, namely stouts like that popular one from Dublin, Ireland. Nitrogen gas bubbles are much smaller than their carbon dioxide cousins (the gas used in other carbonated beverages) and they don't dissolve easily in beer, so when you pour a nitro beer from a tap or can, the nitrogen bubbles rush out and give the beer a signature "head." This process imparts a creamy mouth feel and taste but doesn't make the beer fizzy. The same is true for coffee, so much so that people often think we've added milk to our nitro cold brew when we haven't! The nitro gas also helps further enhance the coffee's natural sweet notes, making nitro cold brew ultra drinkable.
So what exactly is this Kickstarter for?
As mentioned above, we're already producing cold brew in bottles and on nitro taps but we want to get nitro coffee to everyone. By supporting this kickstarter you'll help to launch our line of nitro cold brew cans so we can break the monopoly of the tap on nitro cold brew!
Where did Confluence come from?
The founders of Confluence have been friends since childhood, and while they are united by a love of food and great coffee in particular, they couldn’t be more different in their backgrounds.
Mike brings an impressive background in business, with training in accounting and sales. He’s the expert with numbers, logistics, and viewing the big picture and trends. Confluence would just be an idea without him.
Terry, on the other hand, has his background rooted in science, specifically Neuroscience and Biochemistry. He’s the go-to guy for learning about how coffee acts on the brain, and his lab experience enabled for rigorous experimentation to develop a brewing method and perfect recipes. Confluence tastes great because of him.
Clearly, the founders have varied backgrounds but these differences proved incredibly constructive. The Confluence of their differences enabled this creation.
Why "Confluence" Coffee?
Confluence: an act or process of merging. When talking about rivers, it’s the point where two rivers join to create something greater than each individually. This couldn’t describe our story and coffee any better. Plus the alliteration just sounds cool.
What does Confluence care about?
At Confluence we have three main values:
1. We question our assumptions of the way things "should be"
2. We strive to be intentionally unconventional if we can find a better way
3. We aim to minimize our environmental impact and maximize social benefit
We also have three guiding goals for our products:
1. We start with the best ingredients and don't mess them up
2. We make great products that are great for you and the whole supply chain
3. We source our ingredients responsibly and pay a fair price for them
Simply put, these goals and values combine to drive us to coffee, which also help support everyone involved in the process, from our partner businesses right down to the farmers who grew the beans. You can drink a Confluence Coffee and feel great about doing it!
Who is this Blanchard's you talk about?
Blanchard's Coffee Roasting Company is a Richmond, VA coffee roaster. They just celebrated their 10th anniversary and are growing their offerings every day, expanding throughout the east coast! Above all they're great people and produce some truly amazing coffees. Our partnership was easy and logical as they share our values of sourcing responsibly and producing amazing products. Check out their site and definitely grab a bag of beans next time you see them!
What's the plan for the future?
We've been growing rapidly at Confluence and this transition to cans is part of our plan to keep making great coffee available to more and more people. We will continue to expand our output without compromising quality and will never stray from our values. Thus, following this kickstarter we'll keep the cans rolling out as we move into more stores until Confluence is available anywhere you want a can! We also have plans to move into the retail game with a more permanent home and a craft coffee bar, but that discussion's for another time...
"I was taken by the power that savoring a simple cup of coffee can have to connect people and create community." Howard Schultz
"If it wasn't for the coffee, I'd have no identifiable personality whatsover." David Letterman
Risks and challenges
Bringing a new product to market can be a challenging process and unforeseen setbacks can delay the timeline. At Confluence we promise to do everything possible to prevent any of these setbacks from occurring and are fully prepared in case they do. We made the decision to lay all the groundwork for this kickstarter before launching it. That mean's we've arranged the canner, figured out the logistics, and arranged the design work necessary to pull this off. All we need is the funds to make this possible so you can contribute with confidence that your money will translate directly into nitro cans! We'll keep our backers posted on every update along the way too so you can stay up to date. Thanks for your support!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
