“Since meal planning is so time-consuming, the reality is that I often plan and shop on the fly. The result is that family meals aren't always as healthy as I'd like, which is frustrating.
Now with XOXO Kitchen, a new online service, I have a convenient way to plan healthy meals so it's a relief to give my family delicious meals they love and that I love to feed them.
That's because with XOXO Kitchen, a simple drag and drop helps me quickly build a weekly menu. It's easy to add your family's favorite recipes, and nutritional information is added automatically. You can also select recipes suggested by XOXO Kitchen. When you're ready to shop, just print the shopping list that is created based on your menu.”
XOXO Kitchen is a food/social platform.
Over 75% of purchasing decisions are made in the grocery aisle. Generally each household has 8 to 10 core recipes. These are meals they know the family will eat, they know what ingredients are needed and which ones they have on hand.
Each household has their own homepage that stores family recipes and prepackaged food like Cheerio's and Kraft Mac & Cheese.
It is easy to import a recipe. Once on the site each recipe can be moved around and all ingredients follow. That means if you find a recipe and want to add it to your homepage and meal planning calendar. No more multiple trips to the grocery store to pick up the one ingredient you forgot. Simply drag an item, either a family recipe or prepared food, to the calendar, drop it on the meal and the day you want. All ingredients are automatically go to your shopping list. You can populate the weekly calendar in 5 minutes or less.
Recipes are brand specific because we can do a number of cool things like give you nutritional data and sort your shopping list by grocery store aisle (providing the grocery store you shop at becomes a partner, until that time you can sort it by grocery store department). The user can add staples (i.e. laundry detergent or paper products) on the shopping list page using the same drag and drop method. These essentials can be added anytime (i.e. when you get the last roll of paper towels).
An Intimate social platform centered around family and friends that you welcome into your kitchen. Share recipes and information with those closest to you. The only information that we share is your name and city. Once you are logged in you decide the level of security you feel most comfortable with. A prefect place to keep and share family recipes from one generation to the next.
Information gives the user a better understanding how diet affects their health. Did you know ....
- 70% of adults are overweight
- 26 million diabetics, cost $247 Billion, taxpayers pay 71%
- ".... that a 1 percent population-wide decrease in body-mass index (just 1.9 pounds for an average 198-pound adult) would prevent more than 2 million cases of diabetes, roughly 1.5 million cases of heart disease and stroke, and 73,000 to 127,000 cancer cases in the United States."
While the site was initially developed to help simplify the meal planning and shopping experience, it quickly became apparent that we can provide tools that can be used to generate healthy menus and even help people with health conditions. Many diseases require the patient to monitor nutrients. For example if the patient is on dialysis, they need to monitor sodium and iron. As well, most diabetics need to monitor carbs in their diets. These can be checked by meal and day. We can help plan their meals and let them check nutrients prior to going to the grocery store. This is a powerful tool dietitians can use with their patients.
The community we serve are the people that you welcome into your kitchen, your family and friends.
Risks and challenges
The core functional of the site has been built using a small nutritional database.
• User login, including email verification
• My Kitchen; drag and drop recipe or prepackaged food item
• Shopping List page; sort by grocery store department
• Recipe pull up; picture, list of ingredients and routing box (allows you to edit the recipe then put the recipe on their homepage or print it.
• Recipe Tab; ‘sort by’ options allows you to quickly access a specific recipe. We have put carousels (pictures on a loop) that allow the user that likes to make a decision based on a photo. These will be healthy recipes. Click on a picture, it will bring up the recipe and all the options to route that recipe back to the users homepage, drag and drop to your planning calendar and all ingredients automatically go to your shopping list.
• We have a number of proprietary functions completed that allow the user to easily move through the process.
The money will be used to purchase a much larger database, format the data base and optimize the user speed of it to provide the user with a quality experience. I would estimate this to be about 45 days from the end of the Kickstarter campaign.
We have some parsing to do prior to Alpha test. Parsing is automatically bringing up a list of brands that apply to the product, (i.e. tomato sauce would bring up Hunts, Heinz and all other brands that we show in the data base). Not difficult, just hours of programing. I would anticipate this could be worked on when the database is being optimized. We have struggled with entering recipes and marrying the brand to the ingredient, we have figured it out. We now just need to program.
Time frame that we are working towards:
End of Kickstarter
Alpha test- 30 to 50 users testing the core functionality of the site, which includes user homepage setup, drag and drop to calendar, auto populate the shopping list and sort shopping list by grocery store department. All this currently works. We need to purchase a larger database, optimize it and program to add brands.
Beta test, would start in 60 to 90 days. This would include nutritional information, recipe sharing and The Fridge Door (photos of recipes that can be easily added to the users homepage, allowing all ingredients to added to the shopping list).
There are additional robust features that will be added during the Beta stage and after that we go live.
As with any project unforeseen problems might or could arise.
