Godus Update with Jack and without Peter #26

Posted by 22cans (Creator)

Hello everyone,

We've got quite a bit of information to get through this week, as the mercury is about to hit 30 degrees centigrade (or 86 fahrenheit) in England it's smiles all around and it's not just the weather that's a reason to be happy!

Firstly, the annual DEVELOP AWARDS took place earlier this week in Brighton, England. These awards honour the development of video games and award studios across a range of categories. They are voted for by the development community itself rather than a panel of judges so it is a very honourable prize to receive. It was a big night and we saw 18 different games firms take home key accolades. The majority of the awards went to UK studios after a strong year for games businesses in all forms – independent, online/social, mobile and console. Curiosity - what's inside the cube? won the accolade for ONLINE INNOVATION, making for a lot of happy developers around the studio. You can find the full list of winners here

Secondly, our lead programmer, the amazing Gary Leach discusses how we established a new development pipeline with a lot of technical details. Developers need tools to make the delightful Godus and so Gary runs you through our choice for the core engine, particle system, a strong audio system, user interface and finally the supporting infrastructure, including version management, continuous integration and bug tracking. "Our highly iterative design process is all about light descriptions, followed by fast, data-driven changes. On top of that, we need to support multiple platforms, devices and specifications, from low-end phone all the way up to high-end desktop machines. We want to have just one codebase for each game that can be tweaked and tuned for each target specification.

You can read the entire article with all the juicy pipeline details here

Thirdly, physical rewards. We're making steady progress on getting the teeshirts, posters, figurines and all that jazz sorted. In the following picture you see some of the posters being packed (or is that rolled?) up for sending out and as you can see, there's quite a lot of them…

Fourthly, we found out which university won the games design masterclass with Peter at their institution. Students from Teesside University came out top in the number of Kickstarter Godus student backers. Peter will now visit Teesside University later this year, where he will give an exclusive masterclass on video games design. You can find out more about this on their website as well.

And finally, this week's video update! With Peter not in the office (he's at an undisclosed location) we catch up with several different team members to give you some glimpses of what they're working on; early multiplayer code, meteors, wind, fire, production, new abodes, weather mockups, and more!

That's it for this week, if you are lucky enough to have sunny warm weather then please go outside and get some vitamin D.

One Love

Great update, looking awesome! I'm loving the terrain :)

The segment on the fire was wonderful as well. It touched on the depth of my human experience. Also, I think you should let players edit the image files for the fire, (like the tattoos in Black & White). The fire-face was too wonderful.

That was... fast. :P All i could gather from that video was all the fires in the game will look cool.

lol Jack is really one of the slurred english speaking persons I know, way too fast for non native speakers. I really wonder if he can say one sentence in an appropriate way in terms of grammar and speed so non native speakers can easily follow his thoughts :-)

The customizability that you guys are putting in the code of the game is great. That way you can add and improve it quickly in the future. I also Like the different terrain styles. Hopefully, they will be integrated into the world with weather animals and such.

One question about god powers and multiplayer, how will you handle the fact that you can (for the time being) invoke it anywhere in the world. Populus 3 had the shamen and that would define your area for invoking the god power. It also adds a little bit of complication that you have to deal with (taken care of your shamen) which is great. In the last level, you become a god and can invoke them anywhere.

Looking at the choice of Marmalade as the core engine, how does this affect Linux support - which was after all reached as a stretch goal?
From what I can gather, Marmalade doesn't support Linux.

That needs to be in a god power... my own face in the flames !!!

We can take bets on how long it takes someone to abuse the system in multi-player.

      What is it... Paul?

Dude's got a box set copy of Mouse Guard on his desk. Thaaaat's worth a couple of dimes.

lol.. I think Jack might be on anti-hayfever drugs and that's what has him so hyper... or maybe it's simply that while the boss is away.... :)

    10. Russell on

Jack sounds hyperactive. The heat and sun makes most people energetic. I can't stand it, partially to do do with my Asperger's so I'm over sensitive to the heat and under-sensitive to the cold.

It's good to know y'all working hard regardless of the weather though.

    11. René M Jensen on

Oh Jack all grown up now. No need for the other guy anymore :) "kidding".

      Lol, someone likes Christine.
