About this project
The first phase of this project was RememoriesOf.com, a nostalgia social media site for individuals who grew up during the four decades after World War II. We needed a successful marketing platform with upper income, educated and healthy living demographics that would provide the sales we would need to support our community improvements through the P.S. Tiamo, phase two of the project.
Food pantries and soup kitchens seldom receive adequate donations of spices and herbs and often must buy what they need. We planned to launch P.S. Tiamo, using the slogan "Eat Them INTO House & Home" by using some of the profits from RememoriesOf.com to supply spices and herbs to food pantries and soup kitchens.
The safest, most consistent form of food enhancers is as extracted distillates. Distillation removes the contaminants that are legally present in fresh or dried spices and herbs. It also greatly extends the product's shelf life.
This is the form used in commercial food manufacturing and will be the form of our in kind donations. But to make our donations go further, we plan to process the spices and herbs ourselves.
Most essential oils are produced in China and India. Operations based in the United States usually focus on higher end gift items like scented soaps or massage lotions.
Spices, herbs and distillates will be obtained through contracted futures options purchased from local, small farms, and, when local sources aren't available, on the open market. To keep costs lower, we are located in Upstate New York, a region that is overpopulated with struggling small, family farms in need of new cash crops. We intend to use small, local farms and perhaps amateur gardeners as our primary suppliers. (Farm-supplied distillates are from the facility rentals mentioned below)
(For more information on the benefits for small farms, please view the U.N. study we posted at http://RememoriesOf.com/UN.pdf . Earning a living on small, family farms is a world-wide problem. )
Each donation we will make will benefit a local nonprofit as it puts money into the hands of a struggling family farm.
Packaged distinctively for gifts, and marketed through RememoriesOf.com (where our ads have a click through rate of over 33%) , in bulk to restaurants and at cost for our donations, P.S. Tiamo will be operated with 'just in time' supply and production to keep the operations debt free.
For easy access to an abundance of free advice from one of the world's top agricultural colleges, we are locating close to a Cornell Extension Service office for professional guidance and assistance.
This funding proposal is for the purpose of purchasing suitable equipment for commercial distilling of herbs and spices that will be grown on small farms in Upstate New York and northern Pennsylvania. One distilling unit will be a custom-made, experimental unit, with a Stirling Engine built into the condenser to recycle much of the energy back into the evaporation chamber.
Other costs will be covered through a portion of our profits from affiliate commissions on our RememoriesOf.com site, and from sales of our imprinted products.
Risks and challenges
The P.S. Tiamo project is designed to run up to three months behind cash flow and crop growing cycles.
Since most anticipated sales are expected to be for donations, we can contract with local farmers for our choice of crops before planting, or from other suppliers if they are not available locally. Small amounts of distilled product will be stockpiled for online sales, with production easily ramped up for holiday seasons.
To keep the equipment in use, we will offer farmers the option of renting our facilities when extracts on hand are sufficient for P.S. Tiamo commitments. This will assist farm stands and farmers' markets by giving even the smallest farms new, valued added versions of their produce.
Rental fees will be based on a percentage of the produced extracts.
When mishandled, some essential oils can burn or irritate skin. When ingested, excess amounts can cause allergic reactions in some people.
In these litigious 2,000s, P.S. Tiamo will maintain excessive liability insurance in anticipation of the inevitable, nuisance lawsuits.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
