About

The Vinyl Board - An Affair of the Heart for like minded music enthusiasts

Hi, this is my first Kickstarter project and I`m generally excited about it. I would like to produce 500 Vinyl Boards for like minded music enthusiasms like me. The funds from Kickstarter will not only involve the pricey production but also packaging, shipment and a construction of a website. I decided to give the Vinyl Board a shot since my dad and I got lots of queries because of our two individual Vinyl Boards on the wall.

To me music is about more than just the sound. It's a piece of art. An increasing number of people wants to listen to it in a pro-active way. Obviously that starts with the music itself and ends with the sleeve art which is a piece of art in itself. Anyone would immediately recognise the milestones of cross-generational music like "The Dark Side of the Moon" by Pink Floyd.

Why Vinyl Board

Whilst you're listening to the vinyl you want to look at the sleeve. People who listen to vinyls appreciate the related cover. The CD cover is simply too small and with MP3s most people don't even look at it. They seem non-existent. Vinyl lovers are different concerning this. They want to appreciate every single aspect of the vinyl which obviously starts with a superior sound quality and ends with the sleeve itself.

That is why it is a shame that usually the sleeve lands back in the cupboard or on the floor and I was sick of never truly cherishing the cover art. As a strong music and vinyl fan I want to change this. Apart from the music itself an important part is the cover itself. So I thought why not put the sleeve as a piece of art itself on the wall. With the Vinyl Board the sleeve of the currently playing vinyl has a prominent place on the wall. It is like an ever changing piece of art on the wall as often as you want.

A few years ago I asked a family friend who is a carpenter in a company that creates high value products to construct a Vinyl Board for me and my dad. Ever since countless people asked me why it is not available to them. Music is about more than just the sound. They are always saying that the cover is a small but important part of the music and feel more connected because of it.

Creation

With the help of Kickstarter and vinyl sympathisers I'd like to construct and ship the Vinyl Board all over the world. The Vinyl Board will be individually hand made in the timber species Elm and Walnut:

The assembly of the Vinyl Board on the wall is done in minutes. The Vinyl Board will come with the bracket, the screws and a short instruction showing how to assemble it on the wall (as can be seen in the video).

Explanation of price

Since the Vinyl Board is not produced in a factory the construction itself is already comparably pricey. Add the packaging and global shipping to this small piece of art and I will not be able to offer the Vinyl Board at a price below 55€.  I'm not doing this to get rich. Rather I'd like to give like minded vinyl lover the possibility to appreciate vinyl music even more. Hence the first 350 supporters will get the Vinyl Board for 49€  including shipping.

Then again vinyl lovers spend a lot more money on music than the average Spotify listener knowing that they get a superior value in terms of music quality and connect cover art in return.

Risks and challenges

The risk is minimal. The Vinyl Board will only go into production if the target is met. I already put a lot of time into the original idea, material and the dimension (the initial version wasn't broad enough with bigger vinyl cases falling over).

The Vinyl Board will be handmade. That means that the wood and the production will already consume a significant amount of capital. Add global shipping and a small website to this small piece of arts and it will be quite pricey.
But someone who knows the superior quality of vinyls already spends a significant amount of money on vinyls (and actually supports the artists) compared to the average Spotify listener.
