About this project
What is the project?
In January 2013 we have the opportunity to record our first commercial CD in the unparalleled environment of The Banff Centre in Canada. The disc will feature the wonderful music of contemporary composer Philip Sawyers along with the devastatingly powerful Violin Sonata by Edward Elgar. This is a recording of all-English music, by English artists using an incredible new violin made by English violin-maker Glen Collins in 2010.
Who are we?
Louisa Stonehill (violin) and Nicholas Burns (piano) have been performing together as the Steinberg Duo since 2007.
We are passionate about presenting the violin & piano repertoire as an equal partnership and having married in 2008 we are perhaps unusually well-placed to do so! We spend almost every day rehearsing & performing together, seeking out new sounds, characters or feelings from great repertoire. We endeavour to take our audiences on a journey, through careful programming, thought-provoking introductions at our concerts and, most importantly, heart-felt music-making.
Philip Sawyers spent 25 years as a violinist in the Royal Opera House Orchestra. Since leaving his post in 1997 he has devoted more time to composition and his work is dazzling in its clarity of character, emotional depth and accessibility in the very best form. His first commercial disc of orchestral music was met with critical acclaim and this CD will be the first opportunity the general public will have to buy and listen to his amazing chamber music.
Why do we need your help?
Like most musicians we spend a lot of time supplementing our income through teaching, orchestral engagements and examining - buying ourselves the time we need to rehearse and constantly develop our craft. We have an ever increasing number of performances around the UK and abroad and this is the perfect time to release a commercial disc of our work. Philip Sawyers' orchestral work continues to receive regular performances around the world but as yet, none of his chamber music output has been released on CD.
The Banff Centre offers artists of all disciplines the time and space to focus fully on projects that would be hindered and disturbed by everyday life at home. The opportunity for a residency and recording project will enable us to achieve the very best results at the lowest possible cost.
With your help we will be able to cover the production costs of making the recording at the Banff Centre.
Who will distribute the disc?
The recording will be released by the Nimbus Alliance label and distributed internationally and digitally.
Risks and challenges
The artistic challenge of this project will be to get the very best out of ourselves and make sure the passion we feel and the dedication we put in comes across on our recording. The Banff Centre gives us the perfect environment to overcome this artistic challenge.
We already have an agreement with Nimbus Alliance to distribute the CD but to make the release a success will require a concerted marketing campaign and support from the critics. Philip Sawyers has already been through this process with his first orchestral CD (also released by Nimbus) and is on hand to assist us in finding the widest possible coverage for our new disc.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
