My name is Laura and I am a mother, homemaker and author.
Writing in my spare time is a passion for me and seeing these stories come to life is a joy. The tricky thing about writing though can be to get a publisher interested enough to publish your books. Because of this challenge, many people have turned to self-publishing, though with varying degrees of success. Self-publishing is a labor of love and sacrifice, oftentimes with little reward. In a world inundated with information even good stories can have a hard time getting out where people can see them.
My husband encouraged me to write, and then he started the publishing company, Maple Ridge Ltd., to help get these books into print and hopefully to market. He also found Kickstarter and put together the video you watched. Kickstarter is a great place for people to bring to life dreams that may not otherwise happen.
Shane Morgan, the (the illustrator) and his family are friends with ours, and his belief in our stories and effort in bringing them to life has been invaluable. Many thanks!
So for all of you that have dreams you want to bring to life, go for it! You never know what may happen.
If you like, you can read further to find a little bit more about Tugger.
Thank you for taking the time,
Laura H. Rhodes
It all started one night when the kids asked me to tell them a bedtime story. I decided to make up one for each of them...starting with the oldest first. Each story had familiar characters that the other kids would appreciate and enjoy, too - characters taken from our everyday life. Our son had two favorite stuffed animals that he named himself ....a husky named Tugger and a tree frog named Tepkins (who loves French Flies). We have a llama who is the watchman of the woods and is also afraid of the dark. There's a black lab with a sensitive tummy, a pretty pony who loves ribbons, a cat who doesn't want to get messy and a Bassett Hound who is all nose! And with that, the first book, "The First Snowflake of Winter" was born. The story emphasized the importance of friendship and loyalty. Other stories have grown from these beloved characters. Tugger even has his own blog at TuggersJournal.com where he tries to pass the time until Winter finally arrives.
The next story is "The Secret Life of Boots," and that's what brings us to Kickstarter. "The Secret Life of Boots" teaches us the importance of forgiveness, as Tugger takes a pair of Dad's boots on an adventure through our woods. The goal is to raise the funds to create a hardcover illustrated edition covering costs of the illustrator and the printer. This book will be self-published like the last book. Currently the first book can be found in our on-line store, Amazon, and some of our local bookstores.
Risks and challenges
We have taken great care in researching printers and have found a quality hardbound product that is reasonably priced. The illustrator has agreed to create the artwork for the book. He illustrated our last book and produces high-quality camera ready art. We self-published our last book and know the "ins" and "outs" of the design, digitizing, and pagination. Beyond any unforeseeable calamity, we have hopefully accounted for all challenges.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
