About this project
We hit the minimum goal. Thank you all so much.
We are ready to move ahead with deposits on theaters in both Panama and Toronto for 2018.
All funds raised above the $20,000 goal now go towards hiring local artists to make costumes - each of the Diablo masks are $400 - $500, and then identical rubber replica’s must be made to withstand stage fighting - as the authentic masks are paper cache covered styrofoam and break too easily.
The replicas will cost about $1,000 CDN each to have made and painted to be exact.
We need two (2) diablo sucio costumes, two (2) diablo limpio costumes, two congo dancers costumes, and two polleras (the national costume of Panama)- which can cost $8,000 to $10,000.
Total aboriginal and national costume cost is $13,000 so our job is not done quite yet.
The plan is to open in Panama by the end of 2017, and then in Toronto during the spring of 2018.
The prohibition era is very enticing, the location is exotic, the music is fantastic and the story is very compelling. THE COSTUMES will be outstanding!!!
A magical mixture.

Balboa Coin necklaces
Rare (no longer in circulation) Panamanian fifty-cent coins with an image of Balboa on one side and the crest of Panama on the other. Leather necklace ties made by Panamanian artists.
Hand-sewn aboriginal molas by Guna Yala Indians of San Blas, Panama. These multi-layered appliques depict nature images cherished by this tribe, are considered collector items and are often framed and back-lit. The average size is 17" W x 11" H.

Meet the people behind the magic:
Tara Vanderkolk - co-writer, music and lyrics. Attended Rosedale School for Performing Arts. She plays guitar and sings in clubs across Toronto. She has performed in musical productions, but this is her first time composing a musical as a co-writer, music and lyrics.
Yolanda van der Kolk-Brown: co-writer - book, music and lyrics. Yolanda attended OCAD, is an accomplished painter, singer, photographer, and now for the first time - a musical author together with her husband Rob. She designed the musical's logo.
T Rob Brown has spent the last 35 years marketing the arts through his company Arts Marketing Services (www.artsmarketing.com) He has written a newspaper travel column, a retirement blog (www.retirementdetectives.com), five theatrical plays, a feature screenplay, four murder mystery musicals, and co-founded the International Film Festival of Panama (www.iffpanama.org) - this is his first time writing a full-scale musical, working with his wife of 25 years Yolanda. We are proud and excited at the prospect of working with the incredibly talented and successful David Warrack (http://www.davidwarrack.ca/) a veteran of over 250 musicals including Shenandoah starring John Cullum on Broadway. David also directs and conducts the famous Canada Pops Orchestra.
Bruce Johnson has provided inspiration, guidance, encouragement, musical talent and skills to help bring this project to life. His friendship and skill have made him an invaluable member of the creative team. In his own words:
"For the demo songs, we recorded vocals first without any musical accompaniment. We used only a click track and single keyboard tones (to determine starting notes for the singers) to get this project started. The vocals were then edited together with drums and percussion tracks to form arrangements.
Next step, Juno award-winning musician, Eddie Patterson (using only a guitar synthesizer) added music tracks – from keyboards and brass to banjos and bass – which were later edited into the vocal arrangements and built into demo songs."
As a music video producer/director, Bruce has worked with great talents like k.d. lang, David Foster, Long John Baldry, Lene Lovich and others in a career spanning more than three decades.
Risks and challenges
One Major Risk: A ton of creativity, five years hard work and a lot of dedication, heart and soul will all be for not if we don't make this campaign successful.
A successful Kickstarter campaign will help make this production happen.
David Warrack (http://www.davidwarrack.ca/) is one of the most prolific and experienced musical presenters in Canada. He is interested in becoming our partner on this project. He has written 66 musicals and was Musical Director for over 250 others! His track record is astounding - of all the shows he has done since 1972 - 75% have made money for the investors - compared to the 20% (or one in five) industry standard. To bring David on board would be amazing… please help us do it!
