You're out for a long ride on your favorite bike and it's time for a break. You stop at the next gas station. You look for a place to lean your bike or lay it down. Why? Because that bike you love so much has no kickstand or even a place to mount one. Now there's a chance you're going to scratch up someone's wall, a car or worse, your bike.
Fact is, most of your better bicycles have no mount for a kickstand.
Now you're thinking: "If only there was a reliable way to stand up your bike without adding the weight!"
Enter: The Upstand.
The Upstand attaches to your bicycle's quick release, near the rear axle. Like this:
Here's a quick video to show just how fast the Upstand installs:
And when you're ready to ride again, just fold it, stow it and off you go.
It took two years to perfect. After many prototypes and tests, we've confirmed what many bicycle part engineers already know: there are no shortcuts to quality. We wanted this product to have the same high engineering and design standards as every other part on your bike. The Upstand is made of high performance materials and components, including carbon-fiber tubing and a strong axial magnet. The finish work on the steel tab alone, is a work of art! Good thing we've got a patent pending.
Here's a drawing:
How does the The Upstand stay put?
First, you slip the metal tab into place through the skewer of your rear axle and lock your quick release. Then, just slip the Upstand over the small steel tab until you hear the "click" of the embedded magnet making contact with the tab (you can hear the click in our video).
We've been testing the Upstand in the marketplace, and so far, the response has been very positive and promising! Now we want to build more Upstands without sacrificing the quality we've worked so hard to achieve. Therefore, we need to raise capital to invest in the precision tooling equipment needed to manufacture more Upstands, faster — ensuring no loss in quality.
That's where you come in! In return for your financial support, we'll send you lots of goodies, including the Upstand (of course!), an UpClip, a t-shirt, maybe a cap? It's up to you. The more you give, the more you get.
Tell me more about those goodies!
First, everyone who backs us gets an Upstand AND an UpClip. The UpClip is a brand new item that is still in the prototype stage. We're doing a special initial production run — free to Kickstarter backers. The UpClip fits snugly between your water bottle cage and the frame of your bike. You can then "Snap" the Upstand into its clips. Hence the genius name, "UpClip." Here's a picture of the prototype:
Here is the T-Shirt ($59 Level):
Hey Nice Cap!
How will you know what size Upstand I need?
Glad you asked. Upstands come in three lengths according to your wheel size:
20" Wheels — For folding and recumbent bicycles
26"/700cc Wheels — "Standard", for most road bikes
29" Wheels — For larger mountain bikes (29 niners)
We'll ask you for your size information when the campaign ends. The same goes for your shirt size.
What’s Your Manufacturing Plan?
We are ready for your pledge! All the suppliers, finish work and assembly steps have been clearly established for the Upstand in order to maintain a high quality — and timely — fulfillment process.
Should we meet (or exceed!) our Kickstarter goal, we will order all key components from our manufacturing partners, including:
• Uncut carbon tubing
• Uncut aluminum inserts
• Axial magnets
• Steel tabs
The items below are already in stock and ready to go:
• Product packaging
• Product Labels
• Velcro Strips
As components roll in, we will add the necessary manpower to our 2,500 square foot shop (the one shown in our video) to finish components in a way that meets our exact specifications.
This finish-work will include:
• Cutting carbon tubing to exact size
• Cutting and inserting aluminum tubing
• Inserting axial magnets
• Attaching internal elastic cord
• Mounting brass collar
• Powder-coating the step tabs
• Velcro strips
We will then move on to the final assembly, where all of these parts come together to form the finished product, when then gets inserted into our clear plastic tube. From there, it’s just a matter of placing orders in envelopes and shipping them to you!
A History of Success.
Although this is our first Kickstarter, we already run a company called 2x2 Cycles, where we've successfully designed, built and sold many products to support the two-wheeled lifestyle, including a bike rack and golf bag carrier systems that mount to your motorcycle. So, we already have a lot of the know-how and infrastructure in place to produce and deliver lots of Upstands!
Any chance I can have my Upstand in time for the holidays?
We can't make any promises on timing, but, if we successfully complete our campaign, you'll be able to download a "Certificate of Support," which you can use as sort of a stocking stuffer/IOU. It will look like this:
Thank you in advance for your support!
Risks and challenges
We have notified all of our partners and suppliers about this campaign, and they expect to deliver everything we need on time. The main challenge (we hope) will be assembling our Upstands and fulfilling so many orders... a nice problem to have. We have lots of fulfillment experience, but should we fall behind in fulfillment, we will notify you, and add to our team in order to meet our obligations to you, our trusted backers!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
