How it works

SyncStopping the data lines!
SyncStopping the data lines!

Inside every USB cable are four wires. Two of these wires are dedicated to power. The other two carry data. SyncStop blocks the data wires in any USB cable, allowing only the ones for power to flow through. This eliminates opportunities to steal your data or install malware on your mobile device. It is also important to note that simply cutting data lines doesn't work on every device so we had to build custom circuity to ensure it works for ALL devices.

Protect your data

Through standard charging cables, mobile devices are built to automatically try to sync data EVERY TIME you plug them in. Anywhere! This opens you to the risk of having someone steal your contacts, photos, etc OR install malware on your phone without you even knowing.

SyncStop (originally called "The USB Condom") prevents accidental data exchange when your device is plugged into someone else’s computer or a public charging station.

SyncStop is the 'cased' version of the original USB Condom. We listened and spent some time designing and manufacturing our own enclosure.

SyncStop works on any device

We created SyncStop to be simple, uncomplicated and useful. We built it to work with ANY mobile device; regardless of what type of mobile device or tablet you own, your charge cable will work with SyncStop on any USB port.

SyncStop in the News...

Wired

"Many public locations now offer USB charging stations, but it's a trivial task to modify one of these to allow an attacker to access your data. [SyncStop] device cuts off access to the data transfer pins on the USB port, while still permitting access to the power supply."

NBC
"So if you're often charging on the go, and you don’t truly know whether a given port is safe or not, it’s time to think about a [SyncStop]."

Fast Company
"STAY SAFE: USE A ‘[SyncStop]"

The Verge
"[SyncStop] protects your devices from nasty ports"

Gizmag
"some phones may be more susceptible to data theft and malware than others, but what is certain is that by breaking the data connection, [SyncStop] removes all doubt."

Slashdot
"It’s one of those simple solutions that seems so obvious once someone came up with it."

Discovery
"if you’re interested in practicing safe charging, check back in."

The Examiner
"if you are an “average” smartphone user it may be best for you to purchase the [SyncStop]"

Geek.com
"[SyncStop] keeps your smartphone safe while you juice it in public."

Extreme Tech
"The [SyncStop] prevents your phone from picking up diseases from strange charging ports"

Active Threats

In recent days, we've been reminded about the dangers of attacks via USB (all of which, SyncStop can prevent).

Attacks on mobile devices via USB have been the subject of security research for quite some time and even been coined "juice jacking" by information security journalists. The recent "WireLurker" malware uncovered in November 2014 infects non-jailbroken iPhones via USB and is a reminder of these kinds of threats. We are very familiar with these threats at Xipiter because we also manufacture a device (called the Facedancer) that allows security researchers to analyze USB. We also co-authored a book called "The Android Hacker's Handbook" that discusses some of these issues.

Places to use SyncStop

The backstory...

We originally built the first version of SyncStop (called USB Condom) to scratch our own itch. We wanted to minimize risks of charging our own mobile devices in public areas. In late 2013 we tweeted about our work and the next morning we were flooded with emails and calls. This made us realize we were on to something. Our first production run of the uncased version of SyncStop sold out in a few days and even spawned copycat devices.

We designed our case in SolidWorks design software with other tools like 123Design and Makerbot helping out.

Getting a Case Made

We've spent the last 5 months designing and fine tuning the SyncStop. Using our office Makerbot and working with an outside firm we were able to 3D print and test over 35 different prototype revisions to ensure the internal hardware fit perfectly into the SyncStop case.

Why we need your help

We have taken the time to identify the different manufacturers that will help us bring together the full SyncStop product. This includes a factory that makes our internal boards, and another factory that handles putting the electronic components on the board. While the internals are coming together, a third factory is handling the SyncStop case. And finally, a fourth factory takes all the parts and uses an advanced ultra-sonic welding technique custom built for the Syncstop to assemble our Syncstop cases in a sleek seamless final package. All of our manufacturers are ready to go. We've done our prototype runs and we just need your help to push for a large quantity runs! We are also proud to announce that everything will be produced in the U.S.A!

We've already designed and prototyped our retail packaging for stores! We even have our UPC product codes and certifications!

Risks and challenges

Unlike many other campaigns that are heavily reliant on figuring out the manufacturing process after their campaign; we've taken the last two months to identify and built working relationships with our manufacturers. They are all in the United States and within 45 minutes of our West Coast office.

In addition, SyncStop is simply the "cased" version of our USB Condom product, of which we've sold/shipped thousands internationally (in the last year). This means we've done everything we can to greatly reduce the risk of delays in shipping, because we've already made them!

The FaceDancer can be used to assess the security of a USB device. It has been used to demonstrate vulnerabilities in a number of Operating Systems. The SyncStop is a defense to the kinds of attacks the FaceDancer can launch.
