WE MADE IT! Thank You for supporting and backing our book!
This is still the best way to get the book and other rewards first. And the more we raise above our goal the more books we can gift to children!
A children's book about Burning Man?
Of course! Why should the grown-ups have all the fun? Children have been going to Burning Man since its inception in San Francisco in 1986. The kids already get it. It’s the rest of us who have to remember to have fun as we walk through life. And there’s no better place to learn that than Burning Man - The World’s Biggest Playground!
This is, as far as I know, the first children's book about Burning Man. For the last three years I have been making personal books for my daughter Veronica (who is now 4) after each burn since she was not with us. It was that effort that evolved into this book for children everywhere.
Gifting this book
If we are successfully funded we will gift at least 10% of our books to kids and schools in need of some Burning Man love. And we will gift an even greater percentage the higher we go over our goal! This is a great way to bring Burning Man culture to those who may be unfamiliar with our Ten Principles ethos.
My wife and I have been going to Burning Man since 2008, in fact we got married there in 2010. And with your help we can bring the beauty, joy, exhilaration, hard work, and most of all the FUN of Burning Man to kids far and wide, inside the Burning Man community and not.
As a photographer who has traveled the world shooting in over 40 countries, I went to Burning Man every year as a participant first, the camera always came second. But I could never, quite put it down...
About the book
I have been working with the approval of the Burning Man organization to produce a book that honestly reveals what Burning Man is in a format that will be acceptable and enlightening to children. This will be a professionally printed and bound hardcover edition, as durable and lovable as any book on a child's bookshelf.
The book will measure 8 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches. The perfect size for adults and little hands alike. Its 56 pages will be full of colorful and engaging photographs that tell the story of what Burning Man is in a tasteful manner that nobody could find offensive, whether they are a Burner or not.
Here's what some folks are saying:
“Kids have been coming to Burning Man since a few friends and I burnt the first man on Baker Beach in 1986.” — Larry Harvey, co-founder of Burning Man
“As you can see, Pigpen is right at home at Burning Man, and this book is a great introduction for the rest of The Gang and your li’l folks as well.” — Jeannie Schulz, wife of Charles M. Schulz
“What a fun revelation. Burning Man sounds like the ultimate Free Range playground for kids.” — Lenore Skenazy, author/founder of Free Range Kids
A children's book may seem like a simple thing, but there's so much careful work that goes into a book like this, from securing permissions for people and art, photo editing, design, and the logistics of printing, storage and distribution - and of course getting the word out.
That's where you can help make this book a success.
Please consider supporting my project not just as way to get a great gift for a child you may know, but also for a unique way to further an ethos and a culture we love.
And yes Veronica, this year you are coming with us!
With all my gratitude,

Risks and challenges
The selection of the images, writing, and the design of the book have been done. That alone took quite a bit of time and effort.
Now it must be printed in a large enough a quantity to make the book affordable. That's where this campaign and your support are invaluable.
And once I have a pallet of books, I need to get them into the hands of kids ready to be blown away by all that Burning Man is.
So the biggest risk is in getting the word out before we run out of money.
Convincing people that Burning Man is an acceptable topic for a children's book will be one of the marketing challenges, and one of the joys of this project. This will be an opportunity to present the whole of Burning Man culture to those who think it's merely a drunken, sex-crazed, drug fest in the desert. If you have been there you know, that's not the Burning Man we experience. Well ok, not usually...
And of course shooting at Burning Man takes a toll on one's equipment as I can attest to the sorry state of my cameras at the moment.
But with your help, and Veronica's enthusiasm, I won't be putting my cameras down any time soon.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
