Each leather belt is handcrafted by myself in my Devon workshop. I use traditional techniques to create unique, one-off products of the highest quality.
I often say that the oak bark tanned leather belt is a belt that your grandchildren will be arguing over! Made from special Devon oak bark tanned leather, with solid brass buckles, it’s definitely a belt that will age and mature with you over a lifetime.
Because it’s so hardwearing, everyday use will only improve the belt. Each belt ages beautifully, developing a unique patina over time depending on how and where you wear it.
Don’t just hide this belt away for special occasions. It’s made to be worn. And it's made to last.
One of my main aims in launching this Kickstarter campaign is to share Colville Leather with a wider audience. I wanted to reach out to as many people as possible to show them the beauty of naturally tanned Devon oak bark leather and I knew that Kickstarter would help me do that.
The money raised will help Colville Leather buy the oak bark leather in different colours, expanding the range available, (I currently only sell dark oak on my website) so that customers, like you, can have a belt for every occasion.
I will also invest a proportion of the money into some new tools that will help speed up the making process.
The oak bark leather belt is finished with solid brass or stainless steel buckles and chicago screws. The chicago screws that will be used with the stainless steel buckles are nickel plated brass.

There’s been a tannery at the J & FJ Baker site since Roman times and today it’s the only oak bark tannery left in Britain producing this high quality leather. Over the centuries, the site has grown and developed, perfecting the art of tanning leather through its traditional oak bark tanning techniques. That’s why they supply some of the world’s most exclusive leather workers, and it’s why their leather is so sought after.
HOW IS OAK BARK LEATHER MADE?
Oak bark is stripped from trees in spring and summer. After being left to dry-out for 2-3 years, the oak bark is then ground down into small pieces.
This is soaked in cold stream water to produce the tanning solution, which is then pumped into the tan yard.
J & FJ purchase their hides from the West Country, mostly Devon, then de-hair and wash them ready to go to the tan yard.
The yard is split into 72 pits, each filled with a progressively stronger concentration of the tanning solution. New hides will spend the first 3 months working their way up the yard from the weaker to stronger solutions. The hides are suspended from sticks throughout their progress to ensure an even colour is absorbed all over each hide.
After 3 months, the hides are removed from the sticks and layed flat on top of each other in deep pits. They are layered with dried oak bark to produce a sort of oak leather 'sandwich' which is then covered in stream water and left for another 9 months.
After 12 months, the hides are fully tanned and drained off for 2-3 days, ready to go on to finishing.
WHY IS OAK BARK LEATHER GREAT FOR BELTS?
Whilst this method of turning hides into leather is a slow process, it produces very hardwearing leather that is also lightweight. A belt made from oak bark leather could last multiple lifetimes.

OAK BARK LEATHER REVIEWS
- A beautiful and sturdy piece of art!
- I bought one of your belts and just wanted to let you know how happy I am with it. As soon as I touched it the quality of materials and craftmanship were obvious. The leather is beautiful and I'm sure the belt will last me a lifetime. Great to find a local craftsman using local products.
- Bought this belt as a birthday present for my husband. He loves it. The quality is unsurpassable. One look at it is enough to see the craftsmanship gone in to making it. And it smells awesome too! Plus I love that it is tanned here in the UK using traditional methods. Very pleased I found you.
Risks and challenges
I am confident that there is very little risk to reward deadlines not being met. The only possible forseeable risk of not hitting my deadlines would be due to issues with suppliers with respect to material deliveries and availability. There is always a chance that difficulties occur or errors may be made which are out of my control - these could include issues with production of the materials which sets back shipping times or with shipping itself. The possibilities of such issues occurring are slim but I wish to make my backers fully aware of such risks in case such issues affect this campaign. In the event such issues occur I will be in communication with my backers who will be made aware of any possible problems as soon as possible, together with my proposals for minimising the delay. I hope that backers will be supportive of this campaign and be understanding in the event that any minor hiccups occur which are beyond my control. Your reward will be well worth the wait!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
