"Wars may be fought with weapons, but they are won by men. It is the spirit of men and the one who leads them that earn the victory." -- General George S. Patton
This board game 'port' captures the strategy, choices and fun of the beloved video games. Players maneuver units from one of four factions to secure resource points, grow their economy, unlock buildings and purchase and upgrade new units. Player's eventually unleash their team's powerful end game forces to secure enough victory points (victory point mode) or destroy the enemy's base (annihilation mode).
The Company of Heroes board game is a stream-lined WW2 board game with tactical maneuvers and economic choices. Featuring innovative game mechanics like multiple fog of war systems, an elegant combat engine, cover systems, building occupation and destruction, as well as beginner and intermediate play modes. The CoH board game is also expandable to be solo, cooperative or competitive up to 8 players.
There are currently six possible Add On's:
- The Terrain Pack ($26)
- The Solo / Cooperative Expansion ($26)
- the Elite Commanders Collection ($46)
- Oberkommando West Faction Pack. ($42)
- Eastern Reinforcements Pack ($16)
- Early Bird Pathfinder Pack ($12)
- The STUG Assault Pack ($15)
- The Metal War Chest (tin container to hold everything $22)
NONE OF THESE ADD-ONS ARE NECESSARY!
ALL ADD-ONS CAN BE ADDED INDIVIDUALLY BY MANUALLY INCREASING YOUR PLEDGE BY THE CORRECT AMOUNT. A POST KS SURVEY WILL CONFIRM YOUR CHOICES.
These have been priced as affordably as possible for the KickStarter campaign. These represent items that we would have loved to include into the Core Set but we would never have been able to keep its price below $100. These Add Ons represent extra game features and units not essential to the core experience. (The Core Set really does contain everything you need to play Company of Heroes!) You can select a reward tier bundle that includes the add-ons you want, or you can add them individually by simply adding the correct amount to your pledge. The price is the same either way, but choosing a bundle does help with tracking counts and unlocking add-on specific stretch goals.
The add-ons you add manually will be confirmed shortly after the KickStarter campaign ends through a short KS survey. Later you will be able to further add expansions or these add-ons through the 3rd Party Pledge Manager that will go live approximately in October and run for 5 months until the game ships.
The Elite Commanders Collection features all of the Commander Packs that will be sold separately at retail for $10-12 a pack. For the KickStarter, we have bundled all 16 commanders and their special doctrinal vehicles into one bundle. Note that we will be confirming these vehicle selections with you, the backers, over the course of the campaign via a series of 8 polls to give you the option to select from this current set or alternate vehicles! This collection includes 2 of each doctrinal vehicle even the giant 3.7" King Tiger. Note that if you are ordering two core sets to play with 5-8 people, you will probably only need one Commanders Collection unless two players want to play the exact same commander but at that point you will have over 32 commanders to choose from.
Two US M5 Light Tanks have been added to the Elite Commander's Collection along with a new Mobile Forces Commander! (You may know this tank as the 'Stuart' the British nickname for them.)
The next stretch goal is at 2500 packs, currently 2056 (06/22/2019) and this time the community will choose what we add next. Leave a comment in the comments section or over at boardgamegeek to put in your vote. Right now the British Sherman Firefly is in the lead (hopefully with a Tulip rockets upgrade).
Two PUMAS and the Breakthrough Doctrine Commander unlocked for the Oberkommando West pack! This mobile light vehicle carries a big armor-piercing punch to help dominate the early to mid game. The next Stretch goal is at 1600 OKW Packs (currently 1100) and will be a major addition by adding not only Flak Half-tracks but a whole configurable half-track system allowing you to spawn multiple types of half-tracks (like Flak, troop transport, Anti-tank etc...) (Maybe even that searchlight halftrack :)
The Company of Heroes Board Game is an interesting hybrid of strategy, unit tactics and resource management; just like the video games. In our experience, if you like the video games and you like board games you WILL love this game. If you are unfamiliar with the video games, but like strategy board games, tactical miniatures games or war-games, you will PROBABLY like this game, it depends on whether you are looking for a relatively fast, medium complexity WW2 strategy game.
I Never Played the Video Games, Will I Still Love It? For those in the second category the important distinction to consider is that this is a cross between tactical skirmish games and economy-based resource management games so it feels and plays differently than most other games out there. While the CoH board game shares some common elements with skirmish games and tabletop miniatures games, (players are maneuvering units around on a map after all), it has such a large focus on securing, collecting and spending resources that the end experience is quite different! Playtesters that never played the video games, said they enjoyed the fun choices and purchases you get to constantly be making in addition to all the tactical maneuvering like occupying buildings, positioning mortars, or flanking to vehicle weak spots; but without getting bogged down by a lot of calculation, dice rolling or waiting between turns.
How Does It Stack Up? If you are a fan of of some of our favorite WW2 board games you will probably enjoy the Company of Heroes board game as well. But you should know that it is simpler (and less time consuming) than Squad Leader, Tide of Iron and Bolt Action. It has more tactical depth than titles like Memoir 44'. The unit interactions and abilities approach the degree found in games like Heroes of Normandie and Conflict of Heroes but has a more streamlined (and therefore lighter) combat system.
*Beta Prototype Components Shown in Videos
The 2 player live game continues as we extend the victory conditions from a medium game (15 points) to a long game (21) and we switch to Real Time Mode. These victory point levels are similar to playing a 250, 500 or 1000 point match in the video games.
(Note that the first round is not an accurate representation in this video because we were using a 2 minute instead of a 3 minute sand timer at first, but later we correct.)
*A few changes and improvements to the rules and gameplay have been incorporated since these tutorials. For example, spawn points are the entire back row of that side of the board, allowing faster horizontal movement and a wider range of openers.
ALL OF THESE LANGUAGES HAVE UNLOCKED A *FULL LANGUAGE VERSION OF THE CORE SET and the COOPERATIVE EXPANSION! The ECC and OKW Commander Cards will be printed in the back of a language's rulebook for reference. Each version will require a small logistical fee that will be charged during the Pledge Manager (less than $10).
1:120 Scale, Solid, Pre-Assembled Models. The vehicle models are in 1:120 (15mm scale) with some greater than 3 inches in length. Pre-assembled with rotating turrets and produced in a base color for each nation. Note that most, but not all model designs have been completed; we will continue to add detail and complexity throughout the line. Infantry and weapon teams shown here represent draft versions. Note that we plan to fudge the scale of the infantry miniatures by approximately 1-2 mm in order to help with detail as well as handling that small size.
Heavy Weight ABS Plastic. We will be using a heavier weight plastic than our last game to increase the heft of each miniature. They will be entirely solid as well! (No hollowing.) They will be manufactured with high precision-cut steel molds.
Why 1:120 / 15mm Scale? We did not choose this scale, the scale chose us! There were a lot of considerations and design dependencies that were formed as we wrestled the board game version of Company of Heroes into existence. We wanted it to be accessible to a wide range of players, so the board had to be large but reasonable and able to be placed on a good sized kitchen table or convention table. We needed X amount of hexes in order to create enough space and distance on the maps, and those hexes needed to be of a fairly large size in order to accommodate everything we would be putting into them. The buildings and map features had to be close to the scale of vehicles and infantry and the end result was 1:120 scale. If any changes are made to the scale going forward it will be to increase the size to 1:100 (good news for all the FoW fans out there) but for now plan and back assuming 1:120.
What is particularly cool about this scale are the simple conversions: a 23 foot Panzer IV becomes a 2.3 inch model. A 17' Staghound becomes a 1.7" miniature. Simple!

KickStarter Communications, Comments and Updates
Leveraging what we have learned from our previous campaign we are committed to frequent and extensive updates throughout the entire production process of Company of Heroes the board game. We promise to be ultra-transparent and communicative from beginning to end.
Note that while, our team may use the comments section from time to time; mostly we will be passively reviewing the comments section and replying to questions and comments through the updates, direct messages and by building up the community FAQ. If you have a direct question for the team and designers we recommend consulting the FAQ and then sending us a direct message or contacting us directly at firstname.lastname@example.org
Risiken und Herausforderungen
The largest challenge based off of our previous projects is production timelines. Mech Command RTS which turned out quite beautiful was late in its delivery. Thus we are highly motivated to produce a superb quality game on schedule. Leveraging our previous experience, we have developed strategies to help ensure that we get the Company of Heroes Board Game to your table in a timely manner. One of the key elements is having our product manager move to Xiamen, China for the duration of the manufacturing process. In conjunction with our in-country sourcing liaison Miles Fu, we want to be on site at every step of the way, dramatically cutting down the sampling, shipping and communication times. This step will also dramatically cut down the quality assurance process as well as keep the community looped in to the entire process through on-site reports and updates.
Something else to note is that the Company of Heroes Board Game is 90-95% complete at the time of the KickStarter. Some of the core models, particularly the infantry and weapon teams need either some extra detail or further development. Many of the stretch goal units and commanders need some more testing and tweaking as well as the Solo and Cooperative mode, if it becomes unlocked. Thus there remains approximately 60 days of final tweaking and design to do after the KickStarter is complete (which has been factored into the delivery date).
This fortunately provides the opportunity to allow the community input on the final shape of the game however and we look forward to continuing our community polls and incorporating feedback as we have done leading up to the KickStarter.
