About this project
During the month of March, the South By SouthWest festival in Austin, Texas, one of the largest music festivals in the world, takes over the bulk of the city with a myriad of music, film, and freebies. The festival is replete with great music and other unofficial parties crop up surrounding it, creating a different sort of community that's great fun. However, while there is a litany of musical genres represented, jazz has not had a solid footprint here. There is clearly a niche to be filled and for some time now, we at Nextbop have felt capable of feeling it. In order to do so, though, we need your help to cover the costs of making that footprint.
We're attempting to put on an unofficial day party, one of the many unofficial day parties that surround SXSW, in tandem with the Music for Listeners day parties that have grown to some success over the last few years at the Flat Top Burger Shop in East Austin. We'll be working with the guys from Music for Listeners and Jazz 91.7 KRTU San Antonio to put on and record the sets. The MFL parties have been pretty great over the years, hosting a who's who of artists before they made it big and some who already have in an intimate setting (Mumford and Sons, The Wedding Present, The Smith Westerns, and others). We hope to do the same thing for jazz, something that doesn't get a lot of attention during SXSW. It should be a really fun time and a great kickoff for the music festival part of SXSW and if you can't make it down to Austin for the festivities, it'll be great to have a piece of the music made there.
You can be a part of making something great for jazz, something great on the fringe of this festival, and piece of something great that you can keep all your own.
Risks and challenges
In the past, we've tried to throw an event like this but haven't had the funds to do so. We feel that with financial backing, we should be able to create a product from this that others who aren't fortunate enough to be in Austin can enjoy, gather resources enough to put on a great show that'll gather talent and crowds, and be able to share Nextbop with a new audience. These funds will largely help with producing and releasing recordings of the sets for the party. The party itself is already in the planning stages and we're excited to pull this off with the same diligence that we use to the daily work we put into Nextbop as a jazz site.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
