'An account by Miguel de Perres, 1580
My fellow veterans sometimes talk about the weird and diabolical things done by the Incas in New Spain. They highlight mass beheadings to sun gods and priests drinking out of human skulls as if these heathens were uniquely depraved.
There was savagery on both sides.
When I was in Peru rebellious natives were taken from their families and beheaded or otherwise bludgeoned to death by the ends of our harquebus’. I have witnessed the cruel results of human frailty. The history of the world has been revealed to me as an unceasing eruption of blood and bone. I look around and I marvel at how people can keep all that stuff inside them. It is all aching to get out. I saw nothing in New Spain that evidenced a benevolent divine order. God pays no heed to men desperately begging for their lives.
It was in that country now named after our esteemed king, the Philippines, that I encountered the only thing I cannot rationalise. It concerns two brothers who were stationed together with me at Fort San Pedro in Cebu – the first Philippine island to be conquered.
The older brother Gonzalo was with me in Peru. I remember him with a thick black beard above which his eyes stared out as furrowed and fixed as that of a Greek statue. As a captain, he took part in the many brutal suppression of disorderly locals. Sometime before leaving however he renewed his faith in Jesus Christ and became very pious and humourless, when he used to be jocular and somewhat crazed. He was deeply respected by the other men. Gonzalo saw the mission to civilize the Philippine islands for God and Spain as the means for his salvation.
There was a little soldier in his brother, Luis, who was skinnier and more intelligent-looking under his dark brows. Luis had followed his elder brother into the service and he had not seen as much horror as Gonzalo had in New Spain. He was far more tolerant of the natives and their customs than Gonzalo and he married a local woman in Cebu after she fell pregnant soon after we arrived.
We had been there six months when Gonzalo and a party of surveyors charting the outlying islands were ambushed by men still loyal to the Rajah Tupas, the island’s former ruler. The attack was repelled but Gonzalo was almost killed. He made it back on a stretcher with his leg severed at the ankle and the rest of his foot dangling from a thin strand of flesh.
In the tropical heat and candlelight, Luis prayed on a rosary at Gonzalo’s bedside in a room of otherwise empty bamboo cots. Nobody wanted to linger around a dying man. The almond scented room nauseated everyone. Luis was not religious in the way his brother was so there was something a little embarrassed in his recitations. Gonzalo spoke during lucid moments to his brother about his great fear of meeting his maker. Although he was absolved of his sins by the church, he still saw terrible things when he closed his eyes.
Idla lingered at the doorway to the barracks. Luis had set about trying to turn his young native wife into a proper Spanish lady to appease his brother’s antipathy for her. This fifteen-year-old girl who formerly wore loose fitting colourful local garb was stuffed into a corset and long dress in the abominable heat, following her husband around in shoes she could barely walk in. She suggested to Luis that they send for her local healer. Although he knew his brother would abhor this course of action, he assented.
This witchdoctor had the physique and frame of a ten-year-old boy but the face of a wizened elder, two teeth embedded in the gums of his sleepy amused mouth. He wore only a loincloth and the men were leery of admitting this practitioner of diabolical magics into our midst. He knelt by Gonzalo’s listless sleeping form peering at the leg, pressing a bundle of grass to the wound, uttering strange high-pitched imprecations to invisible things flying around the room that only he could see.'

Risks and challenges
There are very few risks in the making of this book as the main content is done. The only thing we will be waiting on is the printer and packaging. These are all sure things as long as there are no national disasters or terrible fires or tragic accidents.
The digital content has no overhead so I can also ensure that content is given out quickly.
This is my first Kickstarter though I have spoken to many KS creators such as Ryan K Lindsey (Deer Editor, Beautiful Canvas), Connor Bartel (Grimwood Crossing), Rob Jones (Grif Gristle) and Ken Reynolds (In Trouble, Cogitation) and sought their guidance and advice and I am confident in my delivery of this first issue.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
