"Mangaka is a keeper.…While I’m not a skilled artist, my kids and I love drawing and storytelling. Sharing the comics and laughing with each other’s jokes and drawing (or lack of drawing) skill was a great family experience."—Ryan Hiller, Geekdad
Mangaka: The Fast & Furious Game of Drawing Comics is a new experience in drawing games, featuring beautiful card artwork by great artists from America and Japan!
Mangaka is a fast-paced card game where you draw and write comics in five-minute bursts. While this is a game about drawing, you can still win even if you’ve never drawn a stick figure in your life. Cleverness, silliness, quick wit and storytelling ability matter much more than your ability to draw.
Challenge your friends and your creativity in a battle against time! The core of the game are two card decks: Themes and Trends. Start by drawing three Theme Cards to determine the subject of your comic. With over 180,000 possible combinations, you'll never run out of ideas. Then, you and the other players must draw comics and express your Themes before time runs out. Fleeting Trend Cards add another dimension of strategy: your fickle readers this round may demand Science Fiction, Fantasy, Shojo Manga, Sports, Destruction or any one of 52 Trends. Each round brings more Panels to draw and Trends to chase than the round before. When the final round ends, the winner is the one with the most Fame Tokens…but every player ends the game with a comic of their own creation.
"This fantastic new game combines the frantic drawing of Pictionary with the creative storytelling of Once Upon a Time…It has one of the most important qualities a game can have: it's just fun."—Gregory Marques, Professional Game Designer
"Oh my gosh, it was one of the best games I ever played…It's super cool!"—Jadah, 8th grader
In development since 2011, Mangaka is a new twist on creative games with an anime & manga theme. Designed by Jason Thompson (Manga: The Complete Guide), produced by Jumana Al Hashal, we've playtested it at anime conventions, comic conventions, art schools, game stores and public libraries. We're proud to feature art by Ike (manga artist and illustrator of the tabletop RPG Golden Sky Stories) and Eric "Woof" Muentes (lead artist of the Steam game Blue Revolver).
We love comics, graphic novels and manga, and we also love tabletop games! Our goal in Mangaka is to make a game that combines the fun of making comics (and sharing them with your friends!) with the strategies of a great card game. The fact that you only have a few minutes to draw levels the playing field between people who draw a lot and people who don't. The point is to get the idea across and have fun exercising your creativity…and devising strategies to get the most Fame.
Each round has more Fame in play than the round before, so the outcome is up in the air till the very end. It's not about how great an artist you are: it's about how you play the game! ;)
The money for the Kickstarter will go to producing the game: paying for the remainder of the card art, as well as design, packaging and printing costs.
Making Mangaka is our dream. Please support our Kickstarter to bring this gorgeously illustrated game to life and bring creativity and excitement to your game night!

Most hachimaki are adorned with kanji slogans such as "hissho" (determination to win), "tokko" (fighting spirit) and so on. Our special hachimaki read "MANGA", written by sumi-e artist Masaharu Eguchi, who also wrote the text for the Mangaka logo. Wear one when you play for that extra bit of power.

We'd be thrilled to meet our basic goals and bring "Mangaka" to life, but if we surpass those goals, we can make "Mangaka" even cooler. With the help of you, our awesome backers, here's what we'd like to add to the game...
$30,000: MORE CARDS! We'll add 32 more Theme Cards to every copy of Mangaka, upping the total number of Themes to 136! Draw comics about Magical Girls, Archaeology, Cybertechnology and other weird and hilarious Themes! (STRETCH GOAL UNLOCKED!!!)
$35,000: EVEN MORE CARDS! We'll add another 29 Theme Cards to every copy of the game, plus 3 *blank* Theme Cards for you to fill in to make your games even wilder! A total of 168 Themes! Will your new comic be about Archery, Kigurumi (full-body costumes) and Making Defeated Enemies into Friends? Or about Boxing, Body Pillows and Shyness? The possibilities are limitless!
$40,000: CUSTOM TIMERS: You can play Mangaka with any clock timer, Android or iPhone timer. If we reach this level, we'll be able to produce custom imprinted timers and add one to every copy of Mangaka. We've tested these timers and they're sturdy, light and have a nice loud beeping sound you can't possibly miss. We'd love to add them to the game!
Risks and challenges
From the production side, potential delays include: (1) something bad happening to our artists and designers or (2) an unexpected rise in production and shipping costs. The first is something that we can't predict but, fingers crossed, everything will be OK. The second is something we've prepared for by carefully doublechecking all our costs and suppliers. Our printer for the game, Inner Workings, has done work for publishers such as Days of Wonder and has a great track record. We've done our best to 'vet' everyone involved with the posters, buttons, stickers, hachimaki and all other reward levels.
This is our third Kickstarter. On the previous two, "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath" and "The Map of Zombies," we were thrilled to deliver our products on time and meet the expectations of our supporters. We couldn't do it without you and we intend to meet your expectations this time as well.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
