During June 14-17, 2012, the New Dischord ensemble (under the direction of Tim Hinck and produced by the Shaking Ray Levi Society) will present the 2nd annual New Dischord Festival in Chattanooga, TN. Of the many concerts presented during the festival, perhaps the most surprising will be the closing presentation at 8:00 pm on Sunday, June 17. Part video installation, part musical concert, and part theater, "Blue Monsters" is a unique walk-through experience.
The star of the show is 12-year-old soprano, Ethan Dickenson, who's vocal skills, love of acting, and affinity for poetic recitation make him a perfect fit for the unique demands of composer Tim Hinck's sound world. In order to approach the concept of childhood dreams - particularly nightmares and "monster dreams" - Hinck has collaborated with the boy soloist on the text that he will sing and recite. The large acoustical environment of Lindsay Street Hall provides both a reverberation chamber for the strange and distant murmurs of the brass quartet positioned around the room, and it's white walls and ceiling also provide the perfect canvas for the colorful video projections which will play across the interior space. This is total immersion in the dream world of a child and hopefully provides some insight into the lively subconscious interactions we have with our dreams.
No one is more excited about this project than the young soloist, Ethan, who has tackled these challenges with the same excitement and easy grin that greets you when you first meet him. Backed by a quartet of stellar, professional brass musicians (both symphony players and teachers) this performance promises to be unforgettable. Please consider donating a few dollars to support these hard working musicians and it will also help us immeasurably in spreading the word about the New Dischord festival. All of the proceeds from this kickstarter campaign go straight to the performing musicians.
