About

We're looking to raise funds for a small manufacturing run of our product- the FlipStand for iPad.  The FlipStand for iPad (2 & 3) features a simple pivot point mounted to a sturdy base.  The iPad is fastened in landscape orientation to the pivot by two small brackets.  Once secured in the FlipStand, the iPad can be flipped back and forth like a seesaw. The FlipStand's sturdy yet minimal design make it equally useful in a retail setting, an office, or while playing a game with a friend.

Everyone and their mother has a Kickstarter for some kind of iPad stand... why would you back this one?

The idea for this product came to us as we prepared to replace our bulky Windows-based Point of Sale system with the iPad-based Square Register at our two Pittsburgh-based coffee bars.  Before dropping an iPad on the counter at each store, we needed a stand to hold them in place so they wouldn't be dropped, damaged, or easily stolen.  With Square, customers sign for their purchases on the iPad screen.  Our stand therefore would need to hold the iPad in a cashier-facing position and then quickly transition to a customer-facing position.  Since the iPad automatically rotates the display based on which end is up, it seemed that the easiest and most natural way to transition from cashier to customer was to flip it over.

What makes the FlipStand special?

  • First and foremost the iPad needed to be mounted securely to a base so that it would not be easily removed. This would also allow someone to use the iPad with one hand.
  • Secondly, it should allow the iPad to rotate on an axis to provide privacy to users on opposite sides of the unit. The motion of flipping it over should be very intuitive and not require careful handling.
  • Next it was important that the stand be constructed from materials designed to last in a busy commercial setting.
  • Lastly we wanted to accomplish all of the above without changing the look of the iPad.  We did not want to turn the iPad into a bulky touchscreen.

We built two prototype stands to hold our iPads because we couldn't find anything that met our needs. As it turns out, they worked great. Customers enjoy paying with Square and using the stands, and it has made paying for stuff a little more fun. Now after months of testing we have a new and improved prototype.

After taking the new FlipStand for a spin, er, flip... we believe this version has applications beyond the retail setting...

  • Do you have business clients that need to review electronic documents and don't want you to look over their shoulder?
  • Do you teach, and have a need to share educational materials with your students on your iPad yet allow them to work privately?
  • Do you work in Healthcare, and need to share confidential records with patients and allow them privacy while you are still in the room?
  • Do you like to play games across a table with friends and don't want your opponent to see your moves or hand your iPad back and forth?
  • Are you in sales and need your customer to authorize a sale with their signature on an iPad?
  • Do you have a retail business where you use an iPad and don't want it to be dropped or stolen?
  • Do you take an iPad to a trade show to give a product demo/accept payment and want to ensure it doesn't get lost or dropped?

iPads are designed to be portable, so many of the existing stands designed for the iPad are also portable.  We designed the FlipStand so the iPad could be flipped back and forth by two people facing one another.  It was designed to hold the iPad securely in place while in heavy use.  The FlipStand is meant to be set up in a business or at home, but can be removed with a few twists of the thumb screw. For additional security, the thumb screw can be replaced with machine screws which would then require a tool to remove.

If any of the above scenarios describe your situation, you'll appreciate the FlipStand, but we need your help to make more.

Risks and challenges

We are humbly requesting $3500 in backing. We are confident that at that level we can fulfill our rewards and launch our product. We intend to set up a small manufacturing and assembly line so we can build the FlipStands ourselves in Western Pennsylvania. While we could easily manufacture our product at a low cost overseas, it is important to us that our product is Made in America.

The risk with our strategy is that if we greatly exceed our goal, that we may not be able to keep up with production. This will be a good problem to have and we have identified several local businesses that would be ready to manufacture components should we need to fill a large number of orders.
