What is 21 Revolutions?

The 21 Revolutions project is the winner of the 2013 Arts & Business Scotland 'Enterprising Museum of the Year' Award. We need your support to create the 21 Revolutions publication and have lovely rewards to offer in return.

In 2012 Glasgow Women’s Library (GWL) celebrated its 21st birthday. To mark two decades of life-changing work, GWL commissioned 21 internationally renowned artists and 21 published writers to create new works inspired by our unique museum, archive and library collections. The resulting fine art prints, poems and creative writing are being brought together with the sources that inspired the work in a superb book alongside essays by Fiona Bradley, Director of the Fruitmarket Gallery, writer and journalist Lesley McDowell, and co-founder of Glasgow Women’s Library Adele Patrick.

All the created art works have been exhibited at the prestigious Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh and CCA, Glasgow

Why is it needed?

There is no other publication that includes work by Scottish based contemporary women artists and writers. GWL aims to celebrate the hidden history of Scottish women and promote contemporary women’s achievements. This publication does both. Although Scottish women artists and writers have gained increasing prominence over the period of the Library’s life there is still no women’s magazine in Scotland, no anthologies of women’s writing and no survey of contemporary women’s art. This publication spotlights gems from the historic records of women housed by GWL through the lens of 42 contemporary women creatives.

What is the publication like?

It is unique! It is a beautiful, lushly illustrated, enlightening and readable book. It is a large format paperback with the highest quality reproductions throughout, with fascinating new creative writing and scintillating essays. We have included artists' and writers' biographies, information about how they approached making their creative responses, as well as a detailed survey of numerous resources from the collection used in the creation of these 42 new works.

Why do we need your support?

Creative Scotland generously funded 70% of the production of the 21 Revolutions publication but a remaining £5000 needs to be raised to ensure its successful publication.

What is the future for GWL and 21 Revolutions? What difference will my support make?

21 Revolutions is testimony to the achievements of Glasgow Women’s Library. 42 of the most significant women artists and writers working in Scotland today agreed to work with the collection and create work that could be used to raise awareness of the Library’s life changing work and resources. Your support of this project will ensure that a fantastic project has a tangible lasting public outcome, that we have a further beautiful work that we can share to promote the history of contemporary women artists and writers and the Library’s resources and that we are able to embark on an exciting and landmark project to develop an imprint at GWL. Your support will make the difference of being able to create this publication without having to compromise our vital services.

What is Glasgow Women’s Library?

Glasgow Women’s Library is no ordinary Library. It is a national treasure and the only place of its kind in Scotland. A place for browsing, borrowing and being inspired, GWL is welcoming free and open to all. We are an accredited Museum with a wonderful treasure trove of books, artefacts and archive collections contributed by thousands of donors that celebrate the lives, histories and achievements of women. Learning is at the heart of what we do and we aim to widen horizons with  programmes of inspiring events and activities from film screenings to literacy support, heritage walks and exhibitions. We are an enterprising charity specialising in working with a very diverse range of women including BME women and women remote from learning.

International Postage Options

Although our pledges specify that postage is restricted to 'Shipping within the UK only', International postage is available through email correspondence with GWL. This is simply to ensure accurate international postage rates are utilised and you are not over charged for your reward. Please contact us at our email: info@womenslibrary.org.uk

Risks and challenges

If 21 Revolutions was unsuccessful in raising the required additional funding for the publication these funds would have to be sourced elsewhere in the GWL budget, from those previously committed to other essential services necessary for the day to day running of the Library and its commitments. The success of this fundraising campaign would mean these funds would not need to be sourced from the important social and community based work of GWL.

Even if we reach our target and can cover our costs, we are aware that our publication could be beset by difficulties around printing and distribution. Creative Scotland (our major funder) and Freight Design, our co-publishers, are providing us with loads of helpful advice and general 'hand-holding' as the publication is developed. We are talking to Freight, who are an award-winning and experienced publishers (the third biggest in Scotland), each day for advice and guidance as we take steps on this publishing adventure. The final proofreading and checking of copyrights and permissions is already underway as we work with Freight's designers to finalise the publication.

We feel confident that working with reputable printers recommended by Freight, and clear communication with all our stakeholders each step of the way (including our donors), will mean that the only real risk we face will be possible delays due to unforeseen circumstances (whether that is to do with the vagaries of the Scottish weather, industrial action or our newness to the distribution business).

The Library itself is a robust organisation with good governance, and creative and effective problem solving is in our DNA. We have been briefed throughout by Freight and other publishing industry professionals on the possible challenges (for example, we have chosen a print run that is sensible for a first edition of this kind and are working with a tried and tested distributor) and feel confident that we are primed to be able to respond to any other surprises that we might encounter.
