Every NORDKLAER design adheres to the principle that esthetics and quality reinforce each other. In contrast to the everyday experience that you can’t have both. NORDKLAER is dedicated to a high production standard. From the initial sketch to the last stitch. That is to say, no sweatshops and a strong incentive for honest labor. NORDKLAER safeguards this responsibility with the local production of your backpack. Here in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Thus, the neologism ‘NORD - KLAER’, or: apparel from the North

From the first sketch to the last stitch. Each NORDKLAER backpack is produced by hand in my workshop in Amsterdam (the Netherlands). It takes anywhere between 8 – 10 hours to produce one NORDKLAER backpack. Consequently, every backpack is a labor-intensive project on its own.

Why take so long to produce one backpack? Every NORDKLAER backpack has exactly 51 (!) components – most of which need to be hidden into the design of the bag. Cutting and assembling these components takes a multitude of steps, each requiring some time.

Few international fashion brands are open about the production process of their clothing (and their backpacks). They are inclined to spend more money on marketing and retail then they do paying the workers an honest wage.

However, if you’re not open about the production process – you are not taking pride in it either. The production process of your NORDKLAER backpack is transparent which ensures that your order is a responsible choice.

In most manufacturing regions in the world a product is good enough as long as it works. In Northern-Europe I have noticed a different norm – as it is believed that any product needs work as long as it’s not perfect.

Combine a labor-intensive approach with fabrics of high quality and the result is a backpack which will outlasts its competitors. Moreover, the choice of material (i.e. genuine leather) ensures that your backpack will look better over time. Durability that suits a timeless design.

An original NORDKLAER backpack is made of high quality fabrics. This implies the use of thick genuine leather, waterproof nylon, natural cotton and high quality zippers – stitched together with polyester thread.

Every backpack has a spacious front pocket hidden on the inside but accessible from the outside. Moreover, every backpack has a spacious compartment for your laptop or tablet (no minimum - max 15”). The waterproof interior will protect your belonging from rain, while the supportive foam in the back protects your laptop (and your back) from any damages.

The promotional video displays the NORDKLAER backpack in off-white. However, since shooting the movie I have made an all-black edition for the launch on Kickstarter. You can now choose to have your NORDKLAER backpack in either: (I) off-white or (II) all-black.

After the project is funded I will survey what color every supporter would like to have. For the inside of the bag, you can choose between the colors: (I) pastel blue (II) pastel pink or (I) matte black .

I take great pride in my design and my labor. Thus I have summarized reasons why you should take pride in your NORDKLAER backpack as well:

(1) Responsible. Many fashion brands are sketchy about the production process of their backpacks. I believe that if you are not open about how you manufacture your products – you are not taking pride in it either. The production process of every NORDKLAER backpack is transparent which ensures that your order is a responsible choice. No sweatshops and a honest labor.

(2) Handmade. Every NORDKLAER backpack is handmade. This entails that manufacturing your backpack is a time consuming and labor-intensive job. An average it takes anywhere between 8 – 10 hours to manufacture one NORDKLAER backpack.

(3) Fabrics. Every backpack is made using as many high quality natural products as possible. This implies the use of thick genuine Dutch leather, waterproof nylon, natural cotton, high quality Japanese zippers – stitched together with polyester thread/yarn from Germany.

(4) Price. The original NORDKLAER backpack might not be the cheapest backpack on the market. However, this one is sold for a honest price. Your money is spend on high quality fabrics instead of old-fashioned retail and expensive marketing.

(5) Durability. Since every back is handmade I take great responsibility in every detail of your backpack. Combine this labor-intensive approach with fabrics of the highest quality and the result is a backpack which outlasts all your other backpacks. Moreover, the choice of material (i.e. genuine leather) ensures that your backpack will look better over time.

BONUS

(+) Support. Your order will enable me to focus even more on establishing NORDKLAER as a responsible and timeless design brand. Besides backpacks I intend to design clothing (i have already started to develop some concepts) and furniture (to decorate your home interior). Any support is welcome and I want to thank you for helping me realize my dream.

I’m using Kickstarter to crowdfund the launch of my own design brand. By ordering one of the rewards on the right you support my project. Your credit card will only be charged if this project meets the goal – and does so before the deadline. It’s all or nothing. If the project meets it goal, Kickstarter will deduct the money from your credit card and into my bank account once the project is finished. Subsequently, I will be able to use the money to contact the suppliers, produce all the rewards and ship them to everyone who choose to support my project.

  • July 2014 – June 2015 Testing the original NORDKLAER backpack
  • February 2015 Contacting reliable suppliers
  • July 2015 21 day Kickstarter campaign
  • July 2015 Surveying your choice of colors
  • August 2015 Ordering fabrics
  • August 2015 Producing and sending to the Early Birds
  • September 2015 Producing the backpacks
  • September 2015 Sending the backpacks

Your order on Kickstarter will enable me to establish NORDKLAER as a responsible and timeless design brand. The sample backpacks, the introduction movie, the website and the photography are prove that I have spared no time or effort to professionalize my dream. Consequently, I have been working on optimizing the backpack for the past 10 months - during the graduation of my master’s degree – while also designing the website.

If not for Kickstarter I would have to sell my bags through retail shops that sell designer backpacks. However this would double the price because the shop and the employees need to be payed as well. Moreover, I would have to produce every backpack individually - a time consuming process which would make me lose money on every backpack sold.

NORDKLAER is still in its infancy. Keep an eye on my social media for all updates and new developments. Thank you for your support.

Risks and challenges

a. In the past year I (and my buddy) have invested in the best industrial sewing machine available. We work with the German manufacturer Durkopp Adler. While these machines are known to last for decades – without trouble – our distributor is specialized in reparations of these machines and a call away from any repairs.

b. Importing fabrics from oversea involves all kinds of risk. However, I am not dependent on one supplier. So any risk related to the delivery is minimized ensuring prompt delivery.

c. Exceeding the funding goal provides me with extra work but should not by any means delay the production of the backpacks. Because I am working on a small scale the more backpacks I can make the less time I need for each individual backpack. This challenge happens to be an important argument to launch my own design brand via Kickstarter: economies of scale. Keeping each backpack affordable without compromising on quality.
