This project is an expanded view of the Protocol game series rules. It is designed to help YOU play any of the Protocol games better, by answering questions about the game and walking YOU through character creation, play setup, and sample scenes.

How do I make better characters? Frame better scenes? Ask better questions during an interrogation? How much authority do I really have? Where do babies come from?

This book answers all of your questions in a conversational manner, while explaining WHY the rules work they way they do, encouraging you to break them when you need to.

There are over 50 Protocol Games out right now. In fact, by backing this project, you'll get some of them for free. Including two new ones.

The first 30 pages of this book are already written. The book will be at least 60 pages when it's all done. I hope to reach 100.

Here's a sample spread.

The rules for Protocol are simple and easy to use, but the game style might feel foreign. Without strong examples of play, it's easy for players to go off on tangents or presume elements of play.

Protocol is (in my opinion) the best of all the scene framing games, because it takes all these slow and complicated concepts and turns them into something you can play in just two or three hours. Instead of spending 30 to 90 minutes setting up the game you'll be playing, Protocol allows you to start in just 10 minutes.

It is ideal for beginning players as well as seasoned gamers.

So. What do YOU get?

You get a 60+ page document (in book or PDF form), along with a unique game only available here.

Backing this Kickstarter will allow me to add more content and art, producing a stronger version of the Protocol Primer (with your input, of course).

$1,000

I make the book, which includes a game called The Deep Country (a fantasy clan war style game).

$1,500

I add 5 more images to the book/PDF.

$2,000

I make a video of us playing the game. Or I'll hire someone to make a video of the game being played.

$2,500

I add 5 more images to the book/PDF.

$3,000

I create an additional Protocol game — It's Always a Dame II — available as a free PDF to all backers at $25 or higher. This won't be an exclusive game.

$5,000

I'll commission a new, unique cover available ONLY to backers of this project.

$7,500

I make the license to Protocol available for commercial use $50 (to anyone backing this project at $50 or more).

$10,000

If we get this high, I'll think of something good.

Protocol Decks.

Protocol Drama Point Tokens/Poker Chips

Limited Print Run of only 100 ever.

These would be 12 gram weight poker chips for Protocol. They will not be cheap. I am thinking a set of nine tokens (in nine different colors — yes that's what the printer I deal with does) for $20 with the protocol symbol on one side and a piece of art on the other.

Or will you use the power responsibly and usher in a new era of human achievement?

Perdition is a story roleplaying game about life on the frontier, specifically the American West. Characters are members of an extended family of settlers, staking their claim on the new land, while dealing with the fears of the unknown. Exploring nearly random events, the characters must piece together random occurrences and decipher hidden secrets to stop horrors beyond the veil from corrupting our world.

11 Dinner Guests

Dinner Guests is a story roleplaying game about a dinner party that turns to murder. Done in the style of Agatha Christie, Murder by Death, and Clue, the Dinner Guest is a funny romp through a dinner, murder, and resolution. Will you be the aging British Lord with too much time on his hands, looking for excitement? Are you the spoiled niece who wants the inheritance all to herself? Or perhaps you’ll play the confused house guest, way over your head in someone else’s scheme?

12 Five Broken Swords

Five Broken Swords is a story roleplaying game about adventurers in a fantasy world on a long and unfulfilled quest. The quest has dragged on for years. 14 Moonmen from Mars

Moonmen from Mars is a story roleplaying game about the futuristic Moonmen who have invaded World-Earth airspace and intend to ravage our planet with their Mars ray beams. Earth is suffering. Our cities have been leveled and Earth Capital is on fire. But we shall prevail! The cosmonauts of Earth Justice will not sit idly. The World-President has issued a decree to all able-bodied men and women. Grab your graviton boots and you laser-rods and join the fight to the sky. Earth needs you. Will you heed the call?

15 Virtuax

Virtuax is a story roleplaying game about the virtual world that has manifested as reality. A mathematical error causes the virtual world to unravel and it is only a matter of time before it erases itself. Characters are self-actualized programs and programmers seeking out the source of the anomaly, to shut it down before the entire system crashed. Weird and abstract game play.

16 The Plague

The Plague is a story roleplaying game about a nationwide flu that wipes out a considerable portion of the population overnight. Characters must hold up indoors until the CDC gives the all clear. But as each day passes, resources dwindle, insolation turns to fear, and paranoia sets in. Can you hold out until help comes?

18 George’s Children

George’s Children is a story roleplaying game about children in a post apocalyptic world, based on my previous work of a game of the same name. In this protocol version, the characters are children undertaking the task of finding George, the last rumored adult to still be alive. Will they find him? Or is the future truly dead?

19 Zombieskin

Zombieskin is a story roleplaying game about mutants and zombies at the end of the world. Players take on the roles of characters with genetic mutations using their powers to fight off the zombie hordes. But each use of their power brings them one step closer to becoming zombies themselves…

20 Le Carnvial

Le Carnival is a story roleplaying game about the freaks of a carnival during the era of the Great Depression. The Carnival travels the backroads of the Midwest farm belt and the Southern states, visiting towns far off the beaten trail. Characters hopelessly seek a degree of familiarity, clinging to the idea that somehow the Carnival is family. In fact, the "Brotherhood" of the Carnival is based only on who earns the most for the ringmaster, creating a twisted sense of meritocracy. The only true currency: fleecing the unaware marks in the uneducated reaches of America.

21 Upir Gaunt

Upir Gaunt is a story roleplaying game about vampires in the modern world. No, not the sparkly kind. After ages of slumber, a small Haven of vampires have waken into a world of technology and splender, unaware of what has happened, but hungry nonetheless. Will they work with one another to survive, or turn on one another for power.

22 Ship Lantern

Ship Lanterns is a story roleplaying game of the river spirit of a Southeast Asian village that has awakened in the dead of night to grant the children their wishes. Characters take on the roles of children, having their wishes granted and dealing with the results of their unchecked power.

24 Born from Hate

Born from Hate is a story roleplaying game about demons, condemning, destroying, and seducing mortal souls while the angels wage their private war. The game is designed to be played in conjunction with The Offspring.

25 $6,000 Movie

6000 Dollar Movie is a story roleplaying game about a dreadful B-Movie that languished in the can for years before finally been put on the screen. Crippled with production problems, delays, illness, and actor changes, the finally edited film plays out like a glitter-stained collage of leftover jigsaw pieces. The characters are random bits of nonsense drawn from the imagination of a confused screenplay writer. Will the audience enjoy the premiere? Or will the flop prove what the producers knew all along?

26 The Doom King

The Doom King is a story roleplaying game about a tired leader who has brought his nation to the edge of ruin. The characters are advisors, confidantes, glad-handers, loyalists, and sycophants insulating their leader from his failed kingdom. All the while, the king makes worse and worse decisions for the realm. Is it madness or sheer ignorance that drives the king? Can the characters save the kingdom from perdition? Or will the king drag them all down with him? Perhaps my favorite Protocol.

27 Cloister

Cloister is a story-based roleplaying game about untrustworthy memories, shattered hallucinations, and psychonormal vistas. Characters are test subjects in an experiment of psychological and biological abnormalities devoid of moral restraints. As the story unfolds the subjects will question their own sanity and the reality around them. As the experiment inches closer and closer to its inevitable and tragic conclusion, the characters may not survive the horror-filled event intact. Or at all.

This one pushes the bounds of sanity. Expect weird.

28 Colonial Lies

Colonial Lies is a story roleplaying game about secrecy and distrust set in the years before the American revolution. Wealthy “traders” of Jamestown cannot trust the Tidewater elite and the homogenous Puritans of New England see New Amsterdam as a threat to their way of life. As such, the colonies have placed agents everywhere. Players take on the roles of spies, in service to the developing nation, in an attempt to undermine the clashing virtues of the colonies. Will the burgeoning America survive?

In Colonial Lies, the enemy is not the British, or even Mad King George III, but the other ‘nations’ of pre-America, who are trying to maintain their wealth and independence at any cost. Everyone is a potential traitor against the might of the burgeoning nation — now faced with new threats at every corner. Can the colonies survive in spite of themselves?

This is the most complicated Protocol to date and is six pages longer than most.

29 Splinter City

Splinter City is a story roleplaying game about the citizens of a famous metropolis, known for its iconic superheroes and titanic battles. But what happens on the days when skyscrapers aren’t being turned to cinder by the mighty fist of the Super Squadron? The characters of Splinter City are just normal Joes, trying to get by in a world that is sometimes too chaotic.

Splinter City is a twist on the Protocol mechanic, offering players an opportunity to explore shorter stories within a larger framework. An homage to Astro City.

30 Minister 8

Minister 8 is a story roleplaying game of a fascist, futuristic society ruled by the ministers — true executors of the law and defenders of the faith. Tasked with defending society from itself, the ministers are elite guardians of society, routing out every offense imaginable — from contraband to drug use; from larceny to murder; from organized crime to human trafficking. Characters take on the role of these elite members — Janus Squad, a team of secret ministers who investigate other ministers suspected of malfeasance.

Internal affairs meets hyper-paranoid dystopian cops.

31 Clockwork Girl

Clockwork Girl is a story roleplaying game about the slow winding-down of the land of toys after the watchmaker disappears. Gathering together a group of random toys, the Clockwork Girl sets out to find the watchmaker, only to stop working shortly after. The characters are the remaining toys trying to find the watchmaker, before their energy runs out. Will they make it?

The most Gaiman-inspired game I've ever made.

32 British Steel

British Steel is a story roleplaying game about the industrial age of 1800s England. The characters are all members of a working class family, taking jobs in factories that place England several decades ahead of Europe. But while the economy booms for those who invent, the working class still toils in subhuman working conditions until their humanity is slowly chipped away to nothing. Inspired heavily by Mark Valiantos’ game of industrial-era England.

Dark and morose. Pairs well with Highland Clearances (below).

33 Frozen Climb of Icarus

Frozen Climb of Icarus is a story roleplaying game about a Spartan rite of passage. Characters are Spartan youths on a journey to the summit of a frozen peak. Their journey requires they travel with only a spear and a pair of sandals and return alive. One among them will prove his or her worth to Sparta above all others.

34 The Scarecrow

The Scarecrow is a story roleplaying game about isolation and superstition. Characters are children living in rural America all dealing with a local superstition about the Scarecrow. Based on the Cropsey myth in foster homes, this game plays upon misguided fears and preconceptions, creating an environment that is both unstable and comforting.

About the 10th roleplaying game I've written about children confronting their fears.

35 South Sarasota County

South Sarasota County is a story roleplaying game about a failing wrestling organization. As the years pass, South Sarasota County has fallen behind its rivals, failing to adapt to the changing wrestling market. Characters are wrestlers either moving up through the ranks or in the twilight of their careers, now circling the drain in a dying league; they can even be promotors, bookers, and support members of the organization. Play involves behind the scenes action as much as the wrestling ring.

36 It's Always a Dame

It’s Always a Dame is a story roleplaying game about the hard-boiled streets of Concrete City. Characters work to find a prominent citizen who has gone missing, but the situation is obviously too sticky for the cops. A burned-out war veteran, a disgraced police officer, a has-been boxer, a washed-up private dick, a temptress with too much bravado, and a damsel in distress. Everyone plays their part in Concrete City. Everyone knows their worth.

Volcano God is a story roleplaying game about the final days of a forgotten tribe. Unaware of their impending doom, the tribe continues to sacrifice its people to the Volcano God in an attempt to appease the spirit within… until the tribe is no more. 38 Torpeo Inanem

Torpeo Inanem is a story roleplaying game about existentialism and the surreal realities of the human mind. Players take on the roles of characters inside the subconscious of a comatose woman. These characters spend their existence trying to wake her from unending dreams, while simultaneously warring with Hekate for her soul.

39 One Mile of Deception

One Mile of Deception is a story roleplaying game about quiet desperation and its final realization. Characters are 20-something people living in a small town in rural America, on the downturn economically and culturally. As the characters piece together their confused and unguided lives, they will face their own fates together… or alone. In the end, they must all walk one mile…

40 Dead Things in the Walls

Dead Things in the Walls is a roleplaying game about modern horror and the price we pay for greed. Based on films like Dark Water, The Fog, The Grudge, Hellraiser, and Ringu this game explores the lives of people trapped in a vicious cycle of terror. Players take on the roles of characters replaying the horrible events that once took place in an aged, and obviously haunted, house. And while they can leave and go on with their lives any time they wish, the cycle cannot end until the dead things in the walls are fed.

41 Svázaný Rukojemníkov

Svázaný Rukojemníkov
is a roleplaying game about life in a shell-shocked city of historical merit, caught in the middle of a stalemate engagement between two warring armies. The front line of the battle has shifted back and forth through the city numerous times, leaving the townspeople to be rescued by one army, only to be invaded and occupied by the opposing force in a recapitulation months later. With no end to the bloody war in sight, the city has become a refuge for those who traffick goods, while its citizens trudge through their shattered lives weighing the final cost.

42 Black Dragon Inn

Black Dragon Inn is a story roleplaying game about a party of adventurers returning from a hard-fought quest.

The dragon is dead. The town is saved. Now is the time to rejoice in the meadhall and drink to fallen comrades. We shall sing tales of their memories, recount their deeds, and drink until the ale runs dry. Tonight we honor ourselves. And our fallen brethren.

Tonight, the quest is over.

But something sinister lurks inside the town of Iverdale. Someone does not want you here. Someone wants Iverdale all to itself.

Someone wants you dead.

Characters take on the role of adventures dealing with an unseen and malevolent foe determined to undo them. Can they survive whatever haunts Iverdale? Or will this be their final quest?

43 1985

1985 is a story roleplaying game about a society of people enslaved by an authoritarian government. But unlike 1984 by George Orwell, the people of 1985 deserve everything they get. Asleep at the wheel for years and generally an 'unkempt' population of selfish miscreants, the people of 1985 need someone to control their lives. Characters are surveillance-people and supervisors, watching the sleeping populace and keeping tabs on their movements. No one is free. Nothing is coincidence. Everything must be controlled.

44 Swansong

Swansong is a story roleplaying game about a rock band's final tour. Not just any band. But a record-shattering supergroup. For decades the band changed its look, members, and stage show, but their hypnotic music gave meaning and voice to generations and their worldwide rallying fans never waivered. Now, age and tedium have reduced the band to a shell of their former self. Bickering, politics, and music industry woes threaten to stop the tour before it even starts.

45 Macbeth 20/20

Macbeth 20/20 is a story roleplaying game about Shakespeare’s Macbeth set in a dark near-future. The Scotland Corporation has a rising star in its ranks — an ambitious team leader named Macbeth — who will stop at nothing to be the CEO of the company. But as they take up blades and banners for king and country, a question arises who is the glory for? As the the reality behind the legends blurs into the fading light of an age gone by, will the heroes find their own sense of morality changed in a world of dead heroes?

48 Lady Winter

Lady Winter is a story roleplaying game about land of Fey and the mysteries of the unknown. As druids, wizards, fey, sidhe, elves, and all manner of creatures prepare for the arrival of Lady Winter, the sky grows dark and the air cold. Characters take on the role of community leaders charged with bringing gifts to lady winter, in the hope that she bestows gifts upon them. But Lady Winter is fickle and her temper unpredictable. Will she bring salvation? Or damnation?

49 Sea of Man

The Sea of Man is a story roleplaying game about whaling in the 17th century. Characters are sailors aboard a small whaling vessel, being squeezed out of work by the organized whaling fleets of the day. As the story unfolds, the loneliness of the sea and the pointlessness of destruction bleed into a dark tale, not unlike the book the inspired this game.

“Let me look into a human eye; it is better than to gaze into sea or sky; better than to gaze upon God.”

— Herman Melville

50 $7000 Dollar Movie

$7000 Dollar Movie is a story roleplaying game about the sequel to a dreadful B-Movie that languished for years before finally being released to a limited number of screens. Portions of the original film were damaged from years of neglect and other parts were just unwatchable. Crippled with production problems, delays, illness, and actor changes, the final piece played out like a glitter-stained collage of leftover jigsaw pieces, while the characters were random bits of nonsense drawn from the imagination of a confused screenwriter. However, the film did well enough to recoup the costs and put enough money in the director’s pocket for a sequel. The only question remains, will the audience pay to watch it a second time? Or will the producers bury this one, too?

51 State of Jefferson

State of Jefferson is a story roleplaying game about the people of Northern California and Southern Oregon living off the grid. It is based on a very real ideology, extrapolated into the '51st American state. Characters are farmers and loners, removed from the digital world and doing everything they can to live their final years free from cumbersome state laws and taxation. State of Jefferson explores the cost of modern living and the sometimes overly-romanticized notions of true freedom.

The Custom Games

Chemical Zoo

Chemical Zoo is a story roleplaying game about a social order of animals, inspired by Animal Farm, Planet of The Apes, and Flowers For Algernon. As a new social order violently dawns, it threatens to shatter the old hierarchy, as each animal struggles to establish agendas of control and tolerance in ever changing political landscape. Will the society hold together? Will the violent ways be put down with more violence? Who will arise as the new lords of the animal kingdom?

Conspiracy X: Stand in the Shadows

Conspiracy X: Stand in the Shadows is a story roleplaying game about aliens, government conspiracies, and paranormal activity. Characters take on the role of shadowy agents working to neutralize an alien threat and suppress knowledge of the encounter before word gets out and the data goes viral. But it’s only a matter of time before the whole world finds out that they’ve been here all along…

Highland Clearances

Each character is the member of a family or clan, living in the Highlands of Scotland. The shifting economy of the world has led to landlords evicting the peasants who work on their land. The characters are about to become homeless. These characters need names, roles, and relationships, as well as an understanding of the land they live on. Once each player has completed the following steps, you are ready.

Holy Diver

Holy Diver is a story roleplaying game homage to Ronnie James Dio. With characters and events drawn directly from the lyrics of Ronnie James Dio songs (from Rainbow, Black Sabbath, and his self-titled work), the game is a strange trip through the golden lyrics of the metal god himself. Specifically, the game is about fantasy adventurers on a quest to the Silver Mountain, to see ‘the Witch’.

The adventurers may never, never come home.

Lady Winter

Lady Winter is a story roleplaying game about land of Fey and the mysteries of the unknown. As druids, wizards, fey, sidhe, elves, and all manner of creatures prepare for the arrival of Lady Winter, the sky grows dark and the air cold. Characters take on the role of community leaders charged with bringing gifts to lady winter, in the hope that she bestows gifts upon them. But Lady Winter is fickle and her temper unpredictable. Will she bring salvation? Or damnation?

Life on Mars

(Based on Ross Cowman's roleplaying game of the same name) Life on Mars is a story roleplaying game about the first manned mission to Mars. Characters are members of the crew, spending the first six months of the mission in transit, before spending a full year on Mars. The game focuses on character development — opportunities to discover who we are, how we relate, and how life on Mars changes us.

Orc Hospital

Orc Hospital is a story roleplaying game about a hospital run by orcs.
As patients come and go inside the hospital, doctors, surgeons, nurses, and even hypochondriacs meet, love, learn, die, and eat human babies. And sometimes, they save lives. Orc Hospital is a snarky homage to shows like Grey’s Anatomy where medicine comes last… but falling in love is enduring.

Think of it like a really bad TV Show, only this one has less Heigl.

The Perfect Crime

The Perfect Crime is a story roleplaying game about criminals on the eve of the perfect crime. Inspired by authors like Philip K. Dick, the game explores the tension of trying to do the impossible. In just 24 hours. The characters have been over the details so many times. They could recite them in their sleep.

Shellback

Shellback is a story roleplaying game about the strange events surrounding the Nimitz-Class aircraft carrier, the USS Enterprise, in the spring of 2006. True or not, on March 28, the Enterprise reappeared. All of the crew member’s records have been sealed and no reporter has ever been able to piece together the events of those days. No one. Until now.

Whispers of the Green Man

Whispers of the Green Man is a story roleplaying game about a strange virtual city inhabited by others who were abducted by a sinister entity known as the Green Man.
