The Story of You and Me
Perhaps you're like us.
My wife, Betony, and I love the changing of the seasons. We get excited when the turn for each one comes. We ask things like "what's the soundtrack for this weather? the food? the activities?" In the fall we go on drives with our kids to see the leaves and later make sure we jump in some piles. In summer, grilling takes priority. Winter is filled with carols and cider and sledding and thoughtful gifts. Honestly, it's when we're mindful of the seasons that we feel like we're living our best life.
We are also artists. I'm a musician and she's a painter/ graphic designer. We had been wanting to do a project together for some time and in January began a series of paintings and songs. But we wanted it to be more than just that. It wasn't until we came upon this specific idea that it all fell into place.
What if we made an Almanac?
Almanac No. 1
Have you ever looked through one of the old almanacs?
Immediately you're taken in. It's this collection of knowledge and ideas from people who have worked the fields and are taking on the new season. They are poised for this great work of bringing life from the dirt. And all the challenges that come with that adventure.
Giants & Pilgrims, our name for this collaborative effort, want to create an almanac. First, it would be a small, 15 page publication that would come to you each month, highlighting the season and those things that help us engage and stay present. Then it would be a series of songs and paintings that play on the themes of "working the fields". Though instead of fields of agriculture we'd be dealing in fields of life. What have we learned from each other? from our friends and family? What are the important things to struggle through in the next season?
In songs and art and a monthly publication we will be navigating what it means for us all to bring life from the dirt. And the challenges that come with that adventure.
Our ALMANAC is a three-part project: an album, a painting series, and a monthly publication. Each part a call and invitation to the fields and the seasons of Life.
The Album: Tim Coons is a singer-songwriter of the indie/folk/gospel genre. This collection of songs for ALMANAC will be bursting with beautiful instrumentation (lush acoustic guitar, piano, cello, drums, double-bass, even choir) but will also course with the strange nuances and creativity the songwriter is known for.
The Paintings: Betony Coons is creating 12 large collage/acrylic pieces (36 X 36). The paintings and the songs go together as companions, both enriching the other. The vibrant collection will bring out the stories being told by both song and art and create a connection for the viewer.
The Monthly Publication: Starting in January 2014 we will be sending monthly, handmade letterpress almanacs out to our subscribers. The small, 15 page booklets will be filled with suggestions for adventure, reflections on wonder, song charts, original artwork, recipes, and more.
Making It Happen
In making a guide to navigate the important things of life we'll need your help and partnership! Creating this 3-part project will be no small task and we are inviting your support! The $7,500 we're attempting to raise in just 21 days breaks down like this:
- $3,000 - covers half of the studio time for the album
- $1,000 - canvases and painting supplies
- $1,000 - project artwork (videos, pictures)
- $1,000 - first run of 1,000 CDs
- $1,000 - Printing costs for monthly letterpress publication
- $500 - Kickstarter fees
Additional funds raised would go towards covering the rest of studio costs for the album.
Please join us in your support! We promise to do our best in making this project a meaningful and moving experience. We hope that in giving to this project you not only feel great about pre-purchasing, but also know you've helped bring this whole thing into being! Here is your invitation! Thanks.

Risks and challenges
This is a husband and wife venture of art and with that comes our 4 and 2 year olds.
Lucy and Harriet are amazing. We are both heavily involved in raising them, seeing ourselves as parents first and artists later. They have already been involved in many of the creative steps of ALMANAC. We hope to include them in as many pieces as possible, actually- bits of music, Almanac Adventures, Betony even allows them to paint on the canvas of certain pieces. If something big comes up they are, of course, priority.
So if delays come after our project is successfully funded it will be because of family emergencies or something of that nature. Grace will have to come from that place of understanding that we love you and are excited about what we are making for you, but this comes first.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
