About this project
I can't get enough of my Jeep. I enjoy driving it, wrenching on it, and making it stand out from all the others, an enthusiast if you will. So there I was, staring out of the window during a cross-country road trip and looking at other vehicles, thinking of what I could do to give mine some character. Then it hit me…soft tops. I wanted a kick-butt top with colors and graphics. I searched and searched and soon figured out that my only option was black. While black is versatile and slimming (at least that’s what my friends tell me), it is a little boring. I decided that I would create the product I desired. Then maybe others would want my product too (at least that’s what my mom tells me).
I needed a team. That is why I created Rock and Road, Inc. We are a group of individuals with more than 20 years of experience in developing and launching new consumer products. Our members include an off-the-wall-Jeep-loving-product designer, a marketing queen with all kinds of passion for the outdoors (including off-roading), a sourcing expert that works wonders and, of course, me. We are excited about our soft tops and can’t wait to share them with the world.
We have developed a 3-ply material that allows us to create works of art via full soft tops for Jeep Wrangler JKs. Our top layer includes graphics, images or patterns like the camouflage shown in our video. The middle layer, just as important as the other two, keeps out water, silt/dust and annoying bugs. (Assuming you have the doors on and the windows up. We can’t keep the rain or bugs out if the doors are off.) Finally, the interior layer is finely finished to create a superior top. The combination of our three layers helps reduce road noise and provide better interior thermal dynamics.
We gathered inspiration, poured through dozens of patterns and finally decided on a couple of camouflage designs for our products. Then we moved forward with making the hand samples. The prototypes featured in the video were designed by me and constructed locally (in Colorado) by a master seamstress. Our finished products fit on the OE hardware and will have elements not included in the prototypes (like premium zippers, electronically welded vinyl windows and marine grade thread).
We need your help! We have developed the material, sourced a factory, created mock-ups and are ready to produce & test our first run of Rock and Road Inc. Soft Tops. Your support will allow us to make tops in two camouflage patterns for each of the JK Wrangler models 2010 and newer. In addition, we will be testing through a third party to ensure we meet or exceed all industry standards.
Risks and challenges
There are always challenges when manufacturing a new product. (Like pirates hijacking ocean containers!) Fortunately, our team is well versed in resolving these issues quickly and efficiently resulting in minor, if any, delays in fulfillment. In the event we identify a challenge that will impact our delivery commitment, we will communicate this to you immediately.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
