What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About

We have perfected the PuttMate putting ramp using a 3D printer, but each ramp takes 24 hours to print. We will use this funding to shift from 3D Printing to injection molding. We want a PuttMate in every golfer's home and office, and injection molding will let us hit that goal. We have a quote from ProtoLabs to get the first set of injection molded ramps manufactured.

This is my first time trying to build a physical product, and it is fascinating. If I am able to close this Kickstarter campaign, I will document everything I learn from this process, from designing the product (Fusion 360) to printing the first prototypes (Creality CR-10) to patenting the product to listing on Amazon, and even the small stuff along the way - like how to create a killer video (Lightworks) and marketing automation campaigns (mailchimp). The world is opening up for product builders, I appreciate all the help I have received in figuring this world out, and I look forward to sharing that information with you.

Risks and challenges

The risk is that people will not love this product at scale. Our current local experiments have yielded great results (even non-golfers love it). Now we have to see if we can reduce the cost of manufacturing and increase the production quality. Here we go!
