About this project
WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL?
Girls With Slingshots is going nationwide this summer!!
My webcomic, Girls With Slingshots, is turning TEN YEARS OLD this year, and I want to celebrate with the very people who've made it possible (well, just the people who live in the US, for now!). So I'm planning a road trip to do signings across the States this summer, to meet and celebrate with the very people who've made GWS a success over the last decade. I figured it was the perfect opportunity to create some new GWS prints while I was at it, so I've created two slightly different designs for wallpapers, postcards, prints and posters in honor of the tour.
WHAT YOU'RE FUNDING------------------------------------------
To celebrate the strip's tenth anniversary, I'd like to visit GWS fans in 20+ cities, including one or two conventions. But we need a little help covering costs for:
- Assistants & interns
- Guest artists to fill in while I'm away (WOOO!!)
- Printing of the tour postcards, prints and posters
- Shipping for said postcards, prints and posters
I'll be covering a 9,000-mile road trip with four assistants (during different legs of the trip), and our guest artists will be paid a decent wage to do my job for 6 weeks! I'm going on the trip no matter what, but your generosity will make it a lot easier on me and my credit card bill! (Plus, you can get some sweet swag out of it!)
You ready for the swag? OKAY HERE'S THE SWAG!
WHAT YOU'RE GETTING-----------------------------------------
Even if you don't live on or near my road trip route, you can get some sweet thank-you gifts for your donations!
**UPDATED: NEW REWARDS!**
These two rewards are for you Adventure Time lovers out there! I've written a new book for BOOM! and it's coming out this year! I literally finished it last Friday. It hasn't even been illustrated yet! I can't share spoilers, so please don't ask me any questions about the story that I'm not allowed to answer. ;)
Collector's Edition: You'll get basically every single note and sketch I did while I was working on the script (I take A LOT of notes!), a full printed copy of the script with edits AND a slightly different ending, the story pitch, and (of course) a copy of the finished book, with a signature and a sketch. Just $80 for this behind-the-scenes look at what goes into creating a 160-page graphic novel!
The Book (Adventure Time OGN): Pretty straightforward! Once my copies from the publisher are delivered, I'll sign & sketch in one for you and send it to you... no matter where you live. :)
Wallpapers - ALL backers, no matter how much or how little your pledge, will have access to the tour wallpaper in a myriad of screen sizes for desktops, laptops, tablets and smart phones.
Tour Postcard - For $12 or more, you'll get the official tour postcard, signed by yours truly.
Tour Print - For $25, you can get the special 8.5x11" tour print (and the postcard).
Tour Poster - For $40, you'll get the special 18x24" tour poster (and the postcard).
Vintage Pack #1 (lt. 50): Grab Bag! You'll get a pack of buttons and Valentine's Day cards, plus little sketches, prints, or cards, and the tour postcard. $30
Vintage Pack #2 (lt 25): You'll get all of the button packs, V-day cards, sketches and prints, PLUS an original GWS strip from back in the day when they were drawn on 9x12" bristol. $75
Vintage Pack #3 (lt 5): You'll get everything from the second pack, PLUS you'll get to choose a character or storyline for your strip (keep in mind the 9x12" strips are only #1-145!), a GWS tee shirt, and random books, mousepads, prints, sketches, and finished artwork - whatever I can fit in your box! $100
The Nude Pack aka. Naked People Forever (lt 20): A signed copy of my B9 Kingdom art book, PLUS an original finished nude drawing from my Wednesday night figure drawing sessions. (If you'd prefer a male model, please specify - they're limited!) $50
Original GWS Strip (lt 50): You pick the character, I pick the strip! You'll get a signed, hand-picked original strip from #146 on, drawn on 7x17" bristol board, plus the tour postcard. $150
Original Slingshot Tour Art **UPDATED**: The original inks for EITHER the postcard OR the special print/poster art, concept sketches, and a copy of the tour postcard, print, and poster. $250 each (limit one to each, duh!)
A Postcard from the Road (lt 10): I'll send you a postcard from the road! I'll even write you a little note and draw a little sketch. $25
Custom Avatar! (lt 20): THAT'S RIGHT, I'll draw your face (just one face, please!), color it, and send you a digital copy, plus the original art in the mail. $100
Cameo Appearance in GWS! (lt 2): AWW YEEAH you get to be in a GWS strip!! The next time I need a face to put in a strip, I'll use yours. To sweeten the pot, I'll give you a shout-out in the blog when it's released, and send you ANY original art that I use your likeness in. Please be prepared to send me (G-rated) photos of your mug! $500 (Your cameo will happen sometime between now and next year.)
I got my calculator working and crunched some numbers to figure out some stretch goals (since we've already blasted through one of them within 24 hours!). HERE'S WHAT I'VE GOT, Y'ALL!
I'll update the list periodically!

Thanks so much for your support! (And for reading this, gosh, this was long!)
(Also, thanks so much to Chelsea McBee and the Random Assortment for allowing me to use Gone A-Rye for the video! You can check out more of Chelsea's music at www.chelseamcbee.com - she's local to Shepherdstown!)
Risks and challenges
I'm 99% dedicated* to going on this tour over the summer. Your support just makes it a billion times easier for me, allows me to pay my fill-in artists for their time and talents, and funds the printing of the official tour postcards, prints, and posters.
75% of the tour has been prepared already. The last 25% will be 15% finalizing plans/preparing the final guest art, and 9% packing & shipping rewards. Assistants and interns are already prepared & scheduled to make that last part happen.
The unavoidable 1% will be dealing with shipments that never make it to their destinations, and those will be dealt with in the fall. Luckily I'll have a fall intern right here in my zip code by then, but please be patient with us if there are any problems with your rewards! And please feel free to nudge us ever-so-gently and often, so that we don't forget to tend to you. :)
*Because, you know, maybe I'll lose a leg or both legs or my eyeballs between now and July, YOU JUST NEVER KNOW.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Of course you can! The purpose of this trip is to come see YOU! (That’s right. You. I see you. *points at eyeballs, points at you*)
YES! All signings are free of charge. Come in and meet me! The only events I’m doing that require a paid ticket are SDCC and Boston Comic Con. Everything else is free to the public. :)
I would love to! I genuinely wish I could! But I can only visit the places I’ve listed on the schedule. I’ve paid close attention to everyone who’s asked me to visit their cities for years, and the route I’ve plotted has been painstakingly created to serve those requests in highest demand. (Except for Florida. I’m sorry, Florida!)
ARE YOU READY FOR THIS?? GET PUMPED!! We’ve got all six artists now CONFIRMED! David Willis of Shortpacked! and Dumbing of Age; Randy Milholland of Something*Positive; Lucy Bellwood of lucybellwood.com; Molly Nemecek aka. Jakface of WooHoo!; Bill Ellis of All New Issues; and Lar FREAKING deSouza from Least I Could Do and Looking For Group!! They’re all doing a FULL WEEK of strips each!! FREAK OUT!!
I anticipated launching this campaign on May 19th, but it took much longer to pull everything together (and there were a few hiccups while trying to get verified by Amazon!). I’d like to have all of the tour-related rewards shipped out before I leave on July 5th, so we’re ending it in 3 weeks rather than 4 so that my fulfillment team can get to work immediately after we close!
I didn’t want to gum up the rewards section with a bunch of confusing options, so for some of the rewards, I just rolled a rough estimate of international backers into my shipping calculations instead. Not very scientific, but I thought it’d be nice to even the playing field for once!
A handful of rewards ask our international backers to add a bit more for shipping (the ones that were REALLY expensive to ship internationally), so please pay close attention if you’re from Canada or beyond!
Some of the rewards say they’ll ship in July, but some say they’ll ship in September. What up with that?
Since I’ll be away during the months of July and August, any PERSONALIZED rewards won’t be packed & shipped until I’m back home - it’ll be the first thing my fall intern Nicole does for me once school starts back up!
We’re ending the campaign a bit early (June 20th) so that we can ship out as many tour-related rewards as possible before I hit the road. **PLEASE NOTE** that this relies on our receiving your address by June 27th! We’ll be in touch and start bugging you for your contact info as soon as the campaign ends, don’t worry. ;)
What happens if your car breaks down?
I recently POURED money into my car (it was fun! Like a bounce house!) to ensure that anything that might go wrong on the car’s end most likely WON’T go wrong. But, of course, anything could happen while we’re on the road.
I have AAA’s best coverage, but in case something happens that puts us off track for awhile, I may have to skip a signing or two. The signings are my first priority on this trip, so I will do everything in my power to make it to all of them!
I’m trying not to get my hopes up, but if we go beyond the standard goal, I’d REALLY like to give the extra money to my assistants and interns first. The four assistants who are coming with me, and the three interns and assistants who are helping me plan the trip and ship rewards, have all offered to do so for free, on their dime. My first priority will be paying for food and return flights for the assistants who are joining me on the trip. After that, I’d like to pass some of the extra dough to my hard-working intern and fulfillment team (or at the very least, buy them lunch).
If we go WAY beyond the goal, I’d like to pay each of the guest artists a little extra. I’ll make announcements for each stretch goal as we come closer to them! Please keep in mind that the more money we raise, the more our shipping and printing costs will rise (since most of the backers will be receiving something in the mail). So the stretch goals include the extra funds we’ll need to cover the extra shipping costs as well!
Not at the same time! But yes, four different people will be helping me at the signings, helping me drive, and helping me remember to breathe. I wanted to do the trip alone, but realistically, I’ll need one person with me during each leg to help out.
I carefully chose four people who are like family to me, and I think you’ll enjoy their company as much as I do. Luke, Kris, Sonja, and Dawn will be my accomplices on this road trip. Come out and meet them, they’re really great! (And Kris and Sonja have both been characters in my comics before!)
Can you add a low-level reward that gives us access to exclusive photos and notes from your road trip?
I already have: that reward s FREE!
I don’t know how often I’ll be updating on the road - or how often I’ll have access to the Internet - so I didn’t want to promise something that I may not update very often.
That said, if you want to follow my journey - for free - you can follow my Twitter or Instagram feeds at @dcorsetto! I’ll be posting photos and notes there as often as I can.
So did I, and thus my lifelong dream to have my artwork plastered on a billboard will have to wait for a future date. It takes more money than I’d expected, and it’ll take more time than I have. So I’m shelving it for another day!
RIGHT?? That, my friends, is my dear pal Chelsea McBee and her Random Assortment, local to my hometown of Shepherdstown, WV. My favorite song of hers is Gone A-Rye, which is playing near the end. You can check out her sweet banjo-pluckin’ jams at www.ChelseaMcBee.com!
