With just one hour left in the campaign here's a quick edit. First and foremost, thank you to the more than 300 people who have made a Cats Laughing reunion a real and even imminent thing. Special thanks to Neil Gaiman, Jane Yolen, the Minicon 50 convention committee (and the Minnesota Science Fiction Society) as well as John Scalzi, Robin Hobb, Patrick Nielsen Hayden, Elizabeth Bear, Pamela Dean, and really just a whole bunch of pros who did/gave/said one thing and other to make this happen just as it has.
For those wishing to quickly make personal contact, please continue to use the Kickstater message interface, or find us as such:
- BeyondConventions.com/cats - the project's home page, sure to be more central to the project in the days to come.
- The Cats Laughing Facebook Page - After the concert we'll stop posting bootleg tracks to backers; but we'll resume posting them here (starting with the ones y'all have already received.)
- firstname.lastname@example.org - We'd love to hear from you! Fair warning: we're quite aggressive about reporting spam.
Once again, on behalf of Steven, Emma, Scott, Lojo and Adam and also Dee, Corwin, David and Mary -- deepest thanks. We are just as humbled as we are ecstatic. Hope to see you at Minicon 50!
This video shot after the first practice includes a chat with Scott Keever, newly inducted into the Fraternal Order of Laughing Cats. Revamped audio recorded at StrangePuppy.net.
We're kvelling, our hearts are swelling. We are imagining Jane & Neil dancing. With all that everyone has brought to the table, our aspirations are lit with the prospects of inviting a 5th Cat to free Adam and Lojo in their experimentations, amping up our technological hoodoo, offering a musical aperitif, and stocking up the merch and mementos for your nostalgic pleasures.
We have added a 4th goal tier; we're now stretching to $25,000 to implement these wonders.
- We have an opening act we'd like to introduce.
- We're upgrading all physical concert video rewards to receive choice of DVD or Blu-ray. (Yay HD!)
- We added a new reward "Bring It Round" ($30) for those who want only the concert video. You can also add $30 for each additional copy when supporting at another level.
- We plan to bring in additional crew and equipment working under the tutelage of independent filmmaker and documentarian Ben Dobyns (THE GAMERS, JOURNEYQUEST).
- We're going to do a small run of simpler T-shirts we can give away. Bring on the t-shirt cannon.
Engaging with Kith, Cats and Kin to build and manage this campaign has been an incredible experience. Connecting and reconnecting across the communities united by Cats' fandom is awesome. The verve from our new video happily captures this for us; we hope it will give you a sense of the same.
Roughly twenty years ago, Cats Laughing played a concert at Minicon. They opened for another Minneapolis Band, Boiled In Lead, and we assembled copies of Songs From The Gypsy outside the Grand Ballroom before, during, and after the show.
There are still T-shirts around here somewhere.
While it's going to be a tad different this time around -- for one thing, The Children's Rumpus room has much of the Grand Ballroom these days -- it's high time we do it all again.
The band (Steve, Emma, Lojo and Adam) have agreed to a two hour acoustic concert, to be recorded at Minicon 50 April 2-5, 2015 where singer and guitarist Adam Stemple will be the Musician Guest of Honor. This campaign is about producing and recording the show to share as a CD, digital download, and maybe concert video.
Read on, then jump in and help us raise the funds to bring the band together, ship out a bonanza of memorabilia, and create the first new recordings of Cats Laughing since 1992.
Tier One Goal ..... "The Band, Elwood" ....... $6,000
The band has been quite adamant about the need to rehearse before the show.
Tier Two Goal..... "Can you do it... better?" .......................... $10,000
We'll stream the show online and improve recording quality by bringing in award winning engineers, higher quality equipment and a light designer.
Tier Three Goal .. "Now I'm going to show you something really cool"...... $17,000
We set our sights on video, bringing in crew and professional services.
Tier Four Goal .......... "New, with more everything" ...... $25,000
Opening act, More Cats, Blu-ray disks, further video enhancements and projectile giveaways.
Tier Five Goal ................ "Cloverleaves" ...... $6,000,000
See reprise video.
IMPORTANT NOTE: We plan to “home make” many Rewards , especially in Tier 1. If things go spectacularly well we hope to “silently upgrade” some items.
First, backers at all levels are receiving first access to heretofore unreleased and other difficult to find tracks as MP3 files at the rate of 1-2 per week throughout the campaign.
Meanwhile, we've been busy putting together some super-cool Cats Laughing swag, which you can learn more about over to the right.
After the campaign completes, if we've successfully funded, you will receive a survey from Kickstarter.com. This is how you tell us where to ship your reward, select t-shirt sizes and tell us about any add-ons you want.
Add-ons are our term for selecting additional rewards by adding money to your pledge. In addition to increasing the amount of your pledge by the proper amount, you'll also need to fill in some extra fields in the survey so we know just exactly what to send you.
Limited rewards (For It All and Assistant Director, Feeding Cats) cannot be added when backing at other levels.
Risks and challenges
Around Cats? What could go wrong?
Arranging travel and generally getting the group together for practice sessions will be the most significant challenge, so that is our initial focus. You may expect to receive frequent backer updates along the way as we face these and innumerable other potential obstacles with steely resolve and Cat like reflexes.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
