Willkommen an unserer Kickstarterseite! Die Deutschen Kuhknaben (the German Cowboys) is a short film imagined by University of Michigan students Daniel Goldblum and Samuel Johnson. The film offers a glimpse into the bizarre lives of Gunnar Grass (Johnson) and Willhelm Tell (Goldblum), a pair of unlikely cowboys who, despite their strange accents and attire, are veritable citizens of Deutschland and don't speak a word of English. The two exhibit a strange collection of tastes, mannerisms, and impulses, the roots of which are as steeped in the Rhineland as they are in the rich soil of Texas. For example, they get about as riled up by a Schubert lied or Brahms quintet as some good ol' sharp shootin' and I'd reckon their hankerin' to wrangle up some Kraut's only matched by their likin' for whiskey. Most of all, they're known for a steady hand and a keen eye when it comes to lassoin' Frauleins.
Our film presents episodes from a typical day in the life, starting out at their rustic encampment and following them into the Stadt where they attend a chamber music concert and prestigious gallery opening. Needless to say, they attract more than a few strange glances from those they encounter along the way, some of whom describe their reactions in documentary style interviews.
Although we are shooting in Ann Arbor, we are working hard to create the illusion that we are in Germany, and are therefore only using native or advanced German speakers for our speaking roles.
We're fortunate to have access to many collaborators and facilities via the university, and thus have averted many expenses. We are hoping to use this kickstarter to cover the remaining cost of props, equipment, and compensation for our cameraman, editor, set designer, and actors.
Risks and challenges
It's possible that nobody will like our movie because the protagonists speak exclusively in a really ugly made up dialect of German. We also face more tangible problems, the worst of which is gaining access to all of the locations we need. We have some ideal locations that we haven't received permission to shoot at yet, however, we do have viable alternatives in mind.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
