Welcome to my Kickstarter campaign to design and produce a book all about the Commodore Amiga. Unlike other books, Commodore Amiga: a visual Commpendium will focus on the visual side of the computer; from in-game pixel art to game maps to box artwork, the book will be crammed full of beautiful high-resolution, full-colour imagery. My years of owning an Amiga were some of the fondest gaming memories I have: from the endless hours sunk into Monkey Island and Premier Manager to running home at school lunchtime to boot up X-Copy, the Commodore Amiga played a huge part in my life, and still does to this day. The chance to design this book is hugely exciting for me.
This will be the second book from publisher Bitmap Books which specialises in high-end computer game publications. Our first book, Commodore 64: a visual Commpendium was released earlier this year to huge critical acclaim. This is very much a follow up the C64 book in the Commpendium series of books.
Each spread in the book will focus on a different game, and each game will be represented with a striking visual, along with short reviews, developer quotes, and behind-the-scenes trivia. I am very pleased to announce that at this early stage I already have the support of several industry legends such as Paul Cuisset (Flashback), Ron Gilbert (Monkey Island), Dino Dini (Kick Off), Martin Edmondson (Shadow of the Beast), Dan Malone (The Chaos Engine), Jim Sachs (Defender of The Crown) and Gary Penn (The One Magazine) along with many other developers and journalists who will be contributing to the book.
The final book will be printed lithographically to the highest possible print standards and be 332 pages long. It will be 230mm x 170mm in size and come with a soft cover with flaps that fold in to double the thickness. It will use thread sewn binding which is a special type of bind that has two main advantages: the first is that you are able to open the book flat (without the usual glue cracking); and second is that it is much more durable. Glue ages over time and cracks but thread sewn binds last forever. The book is also available as a limited edition hardback option (only 25 available) which will be individually numbered and signed by Stoo Cambridge and Jon Hare (Sensible Software).
Commodore Amiga: a visual Commpendium will be printed on high quality paper in full colour. I will be using a local printer who I have used and known for many years. By using a local printer I will be able to monitor the quality, resulting in a far superior product than if printed cheaply overseas.
The text will be edited and overseen by industry legend Steve Jarratt, a veteran computer games journalist who has edited countless best-selling publications including Amiga Format, Total!, and EDGE. The foreword will be written by ex-Sensible Software graphic artist Stoo Cambridge, who made his name creating the artwork for classic games such as Cannon Fodder and Sensible Golf.
The different games and utilities featured throughout the book will flow in chronological order, starting with the Amiga’s launch in 1985, right through to latter-day AGA and CD32 games. It will also feature illustrations from renowned artists such as Roger Dean (Psygnosis) and Bob Wakelin (Ocean), printed in all their full-colour glory!
Additionally, there will be plenty of game maps throughout the book. I have gained permission from Hall of Light to use their maps, and the book will also feature brand new maps created exclusively for the book by veteran journalist and 'mapping supremo' Andy Roberts (Thalamus/Commodore Format). Also contributing to the maps will be Daniel Kürsten from the excellent Amiga Graphics Archive.
Also in the book will be six developer profiles. Each profile will be 1000 words and legendary companies such as System 3, Cinemaware and Sensible Software will be profiled.
Throughout the book will also be five 500 word interviews with Amiga artists such as Jim Sachs, Dan Malone and Tobias Richter.
The demo scene will also feature in the book, celebrating the best of the best in Amiga demos. This section will be put together in collaboration with ex demo scener Matt Wilsher. Matt is also in touch with other ex sceners who will be contributing to this section of the book. We have also produced a set of five demo scene postcards to accompany the campaign. Each backer will get a handwritten postcard with each pledge and there is also the chance to buy a full set of the five postcards.
But it’s not just about the games! We will also profile five of the top software houses, documenting the origins, successes, and legacies of some of the best-loved creators of Amiga games. Each profile will be written by Steve Jarratt and run across two spreads.
Last but not least, there will be photography for each of the major Amiga models throughout the book. Matt Wilsher, who also did the photography in the C64 book, will be shooting his way though some classic Amiga hardware once again. Also helping out with photography will be C64.com frontman, Andreas Wallström.
For the last six months behind the scenes I have been busy recruiting contributors to the book and am pleased to say that there are already some HUGE names signed up to contribute with many more to follow...

A large chunk of the £25K target I have set will cover the postage and printing of the book and what little is left will cover the other costs associated with the project (not forgetting the Kickstater fee!). This is slightly higher than the target for the C64 book, because the Amiga book will have more pages and extra editorial content. More content = more pages = more weight = higher print and postage costs.
Special rewards include a limited edition hardback book (25 available), signed by Stoo Cambridge and Jon Hare (Sensible Software), and also the chance to create your OWN spread in the book (you choose the game to be featured and even write your own mini-review!). Please note that if you purchase this reward you will need to suggest five games and I will choose one of them with you to avoid duplication throughout the book. I have tried to create a series of well priced rewards that will hopefully suit all backers. These range from £5 right up to £1000. Each and every backer will get a 'demo scene' postcard from me personally thanking them! There are five in total to collect.
As part of this campaign we will also be offering a game that was never released on the Amiga. Once regarded as the Holy Grail of unreleased Amiga games, Putty Squad famously never saw the light of day, apart from a demo version. Last year, Fairlight cracker Galahad revived John Twiddy's original Amiga code and produced a full version. I have permission from System 3 and Galahad to produce 100 replica copies of Putty Squad on actual floppy disks in authentic packaging exclusively for this Kickstarter campaign. I am working with Phillip Thornton and System 3 closely, to make sure the packaging is as authentic as possible. 50 of the 100 copies will be signed by the original development team, making this a highly sought-after collectible.

A chunk of the pages are already designed and I will carry on the design throughout the duration of the Kickstarter. Design of the books is due to be finished in February and will be printed and ready for postage in March 2015. I will however aim to get it done sooner if I can. Those who backed my C64 book will know that the design was finished on time and I will provide lots of updates all along the way.

Risks and challenges
When producing a book there are normally certain risks associated with it which hopefully I have minimised. As a Graphic Designer by trade I am perfectly placed to deliver this project to a very high standard. I have over ten years’ experience in design and print so am used to seeing through books and brochures of this size. Also, having successfully delivered a Kickstater campaign before (on time), I have gained considerable experience from this.
The other risk could be quality control of the print. However, by using a local printer, I am paying more but I can guarantee the print quality. I will personally oversee the whole process and will make sure it is printed correctly to the highest possible standards.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
