About this project
Graphic Design: Mim Adkins
Kiva and DeeDee Stone have tough lives keeping up with the go-go-go pace of their hometown, Solasenda. Their father disappeared 5 years ago, their mother is too busy working double shifts to be home often, and their Aunt Agnes is hounding them to get into a trade guild so that they can finally move west with the rest of the town.
But their world is turned upside down when the girls discover that the wall the town calls The Beginning actually ended thousands of years of traditions focused on not on working, but dreaming. In that world, the 6 tribes of DreamKeepers could use their dream powers to fly, change shape, travel to the past, live underwater, create impossible buildings, look into the future, and more. When Kiva discovers a dangerous plot to get rid of her and DeeDee and capture all remaining dreamers, they run to Hilde and Marcel, two of the last free DreamKeepers, to save them.
As these elders lead them up the Varruvyen river to the Eyland of Return, they train the girls how to develop dream powers greater than anything they had ever imagined. But can they become strong enough to face the monsters that haunt their dreams at night, strong enough to fight the enemies that draw nearer each day? The answer lies somewhere in the broken history of Orora Crona, the Valley of Dreams lost centuries ago, and whoever can piece it together first will rule for centuries to come.
Hi. I'm an artist and author who has been studying dreams for the past 30 years BECAUSE DREAMS ARE AMAZING DEMONSTRATIONS OF CREATIVITY AND SOURCES OF INSPIRATION! People were always telling my daughters, "Follow your dreams!" but they never meant their actual night dreams, and most people didn't even pay attention to their own dreams, let alone show my daughters tap into them to discover how unique, amazing, and inspiring they were. Pfft! So I started teaching them how to do that, and what they accomplished in their dreams turned into the adventures of Kiva and DeeDee Stone.
So this KickStarter is a chance to help readers explore dreams as keys to their individual awesomeness. How? Through a fantasy adventure series about the Stone sisters who live in a town where no one dreams. Then, they meet members of a dying culture, the DreamKeepers, who teach them how to not only remember and explore their dreams, but also use them to develop incredible super powers. The 6 tribes of DreamKeepers can use their dreams to fly, change shape, travel to the past, live underwater, create impossible buildings, look into the future, and lots of other awesome tricks. Why? BECAUSE WE CAN DO ANYTHING WE WANT IN OUR DREAMS!
Now this is a fantasy series, but most of the techniques the characters use in the book really work, so readers can actually get better at dreaming by following what the characters do. So, if you want to help fill the world with more people interested in TRULY following their dreams, then support this project, which will pay for the development of the first book into a TOTALLY AWESOME multimedia ebook app that IS ALL ABOUT DREAMING and will BLOW YOUR MIND!
This project I started 11 years ago has grown into 3 books- of which Raising Sleeping Stones is the first -that will be released as interactive apps so that readers can do things they can't with physical books. Like what? Like explore the story more deeply through music. I hired 2 incredible composers to create the world's first complete story score, a soundtrack embedded in the book so that every time you read an important passage, music plays that not only reflects the characters' emotions at that time, but also includes plenty of musical clues that curious listeners can use to unlock hidden layers of the story. Why? BECAUSE DREAMS ARE LIKE OGRES- THEY HAVE LOTS OF LAYERS! Listen to the track below, for example, to hear what plays while the restless DeeDee is racing to complete her challenge. This is her theme, which changes over the course of the book as she changes:
Isn't she fun? And you can hear how different the sisters are by listening to Kiva's opening theme, which plays as she's worrying if she will ever complete a challenge or fit in (wait a couple of seconds for it to begin):
Oo! I've got chills! And that theme, too, changes every time Kiva changes, giving readers extra clues to what's happening to her that are not in the text.
But wait- there's more. I've got an incredible illustrator who is making images that...wait for it...develop as the characters do. What does that mean? It means that, for example, when a character makes a breakthrough in their dreams in Chapter 8, that breakthrough unlocks hidden layers of an illustration in an earlier chapter. And the more you read, the more hidden images the cover will reveal. Why? BECAUSE DREAMS CAN REVEAL SO MUCH TO US THAT WAS HIDDEN BEFORE! (See video below).
OK, that's already pretty cool, and I know you're ready to hit the BACK THIS PROJECT button, but wait- there's more! Here's a quick rundown of some other features we need your backing to make possible:
-The ability to make reading and thinking about dreams an international EVENT by rolling out chapters each week over this summer so that readers have time to reflect, discover hidden layers of the plot and share ideas about what they are are learning to do. This is what Charles Dickens used to do and readers loved it because WE ALL WANT TO SHARE WHAT MATTERS TO US!
-Interactive features of the app that will let readers solve mysteries and unlock more hidden illustrations, music, and text;
-An online gallery on our awesome website raisingstones.com (designed by web designer Barbara Groth) where readers can upload and share their own illustrations from each chapter because this project is as much about readers' creativity as it is about our team's;
-A Tumblr where readers can share their ideas about dreaming and even their own dreams; (see above)
-A Notes and Highlights feature that allows readers to keep track of their favorite characters, dream tribe, and plot developments;
So if you think that readers deserve a chance to TRULY follow their dreams and are ready to help me pay all the team members to lend their awesomeness to the project and make it incredible, then HIT THAT BUTTON AND BACK THIS PROJECT!
Haven't hit it yet? Then remember that everyone dreams every night, but so few pay attention and tap into them to discover their own super powers. Don't you want readers to discover how unique and amazing they are? THEN MAKE IT HAPPEN! Back this project.
Risks and challenges
So this is a project with a LOT of moving parts and new elements. Here's how we plan to handle any bumps in the road that might come up:
-Technical integration of all the features and assets: we have an amazing app developer AND a backup developer, both with lots of experience getting apps onto the app store and through debugging;
-Reaching more readers: we have thousands of contacts in our team's networks and are reaching out to them and to bloggers of middle-grade and YA readers to spread the word;
-Issues with illustrations and music: we have built in trial and error protocols as we roll out chapters so that we can respond quickly to reader issues and suggestions.
Have a question? If the info above doesn't help, you can ask the project creator directly.
