When my then two-year-old daughter Evelyn would get upset with me, in her frustration she would tell me to “go away, Mama!” I remember one day, after hearing those words (. . . a few too many times), I told her, “No, Evelyn. I’m not going away. No matter what you do.” And then I thought: maybe there’s a story here that needs to be told.
Go Away, Mama! follows a mom and her daughter through the stages of stubborn child to teenage rebellion to college good-byes and starting a family. Along the way, we watch the push and pull of a strong-willed girl and her devoted mom as they navigate life’s biggest milestones together.
As a full-time working mom to two littles under four, I’m navigating the crazy right now. My goal in writing this book is to encourage moms, in particular, as they journey through the messy, challenging, and miraculous moments of parenthood.
I think it’s important to tell this story, especially with all of the guilt and criticism that mothers often put on ourselves. I hope this book helps moms know that they’re not alone in the challenges of parenthood, that we’re all just doing the best job we can. And I hope it reminds us all to hold on a little tighter to those raw, precious, and all-too-fleeting moments that come with raising children.
Little kids love to emulate the bigger kids so I hope they enjoy the main character’s many moods, her frequent outbursts of “go away, Mama!” and ultimately feel the tenderness of this story.
In my dream world, I’d love for this book to become a favorite read that kids pull off of the shelf again and again, along with being a staple gift for Mother’s Day, baby showers, or graduations—much like the book Love You Forever was for me. I’m confident when I hold the finished book in my hands and read it to my littles, I won’t get to the end without a few tears—and my hope is, it’s the same for you.
Writing and publishing this book has been an amazing experience already—and we’re so close to being finished. I’m working with a fabulous illustrator, Elly Sebastian, and the talented team at Beaver’s Pond Press to bring this book to life.
The illustrations are complete. The book layout is also in the process of being finalized. From there, all that’s left is printing and distribution.
So far, I’ve paid for the cost of the book on my own but with this Kickstarter campaign, I’m hoping to help offset the remaining costs, while also giving you the chance to get your copy before it hits the shelves—and score some fun bonus items.
I completely understand if you can’t contribute financially. And in fact, one big way to support just so happens to be free! Spreading the word on your social channels and/or via word of mouth to friends, family and co-workers, makes a big impact (so the Kickstarter gurus say).
We've hit our goal in record time (amazing!) so now we're stretching it a bit. If we hit $10,000 by the deadline, past and present backers will also receive this cute door hanger to add to their "extras" AND I'll donate 50 books to Heart of America to support their efforts to revitalize educational spaces so students can learn and grow. Help us make it happen!
Risks and challenges
We all know there are risks to any project but I’m confident my book will land in your lap on time. As I said before, the big things are already complete—now it’s just printing and distributing.
Beaver’s Pond Press has twenty years of experience working with hundreds of authors to publish their books and I have total confidence in the quality and delivery of my book.
As for the bonus items, most are already in production and are scheduled to arrive on time. If there are any anticipated delays, I will be sure to communicate those to you. I’ll also communicate the happy stuff too—like when and where my first book signing will be!
You guys, I feel blessed already to have so much support from many of you. Thank you, thank you!
