About
“Present” is a shelving system for the way we live today. Active lives in smaller spaces, with portable computing devices and portable transportation devices - skateboards and scooters - and a special place for our prized objets d'art and gadgets.

What is Present?

Present is a carefully crafted modular shelving system, roughly three feet square and six inches deep, that expands when you need to. Each "module" consists of a pair of brass plated rails and three solid walnut shelf elements; a box that can be positioned two ways, a flat shelf and a sturdy rail with two adjustable hooks.
Each shelf element has multiple functions, the box as a simple container for pocket contents or as a frame for valued items, the shelf for items that need more vertical space and the rail to hang decks, or with the included hooks, clothing.

The wall rail system is custom designed for modularity, with two sets of holes for side-by-side placement, and special side grooves to use as eventual conduits for electrical charging wire (for version 2.0).
Seasons change, so hanging and shifting shelf elements is made easy with a clever adjustable fastener that drops into the keyhole shaped holes in the rails.
Who is Present made by, and why?

Present is the first MOCO x Furni product, a collaboration between MOCO LOCO, one of the world’s most popular design blogs, founded by editor Harry Wakefield, and Furni, the Montreal-based design and lifestyle brand/ manufacturer headed up by designer/ maker Mike Giles. Both Furni and MOCO LOCO have been in the design world for more than 10 years and have established brands with a focus on quality and innovation.

Present has been developed over several months with multiple prototypes leading to the final design you see here.

The first run of will be hand made in Montreal, Quebec by Furni using high quality materials: solid walnut wood and mild steel.

The modules have been designed for easy and rapid installation in addition to long life and, compact shipping!
“Our goal was to make something useful, that reflects our modern lifestyles, that was flexible and made of honest materials that could be sourced locally.” says Mike.
“Present embodies ideas I’ve had for years about scale, functionality and collaboration in furniture. It’s an open system we want to iterate, in fact a big part is the creative combinations we expect to see from users.” says Harry.

Risks and challenges
Now that we’ve produced several prototypes of Present, we're confident in our ability to fabricate the modules to a high level of quality. However, making a larger production run will likely present some challenges as will managing the orders and shipping (that said, Furni has a lot of experience doing all of this). International customs, logistic delays and Force Majeure can’t be foreseen, but we will be on alert to mitigate should they arise.
